The last four days has been a great start to Darren Gough’s reign as Yorkshire Captain. Although most fans were optimistic for the season ahead few would have predicted that Yorkshire would give Surrey such a thrashing, by 346 runs.

Apart from when they slipped to 127 for 5 on the first day Yorkshire totally dominated proceedings and it was a great allround performance. Rudolph’s 136 ball debut ton set the tone and his 190 partnership with Adil Rashid (86) was quite magnificent. There was even better to follow when Bresnan and Gillespie hit their first Yorkshire centuries and broke the ninth wicket partnership record that had stood since 1898, their partnership worth 246 as Yorkshire declared on 594 for 9.

When Surrey batted Adil Rashid’s 4-65 including breaking through the Newman/Ramprakash partnership was crucial. Gough showed all his class and experience taking 3 for 28 (including two in two balls) and Hoggard was reliable as ever with 2 for 48. Brophy picked up 5 victims. Surrey all out 344.

Gough didn’t enforce the follow on but decided to bat Surrey out of the game, this was done with Craig White hitting a terrific 117 (off 131 balls), Sayers also notched up a half century, quick runs in the middle order followed setting Surrey a total in excess on 500.

Adil Rashid removed Batty to the final ball of the day. Yorkshire bowled quite superbly on the fourth day to wrap up victory just after lunch. Hoggard and Gough moved the ball about, Rashid showed what a great talent he is; Hoggard 4-34, Gough 3-50 and Rashid 3-65.
