So what do you think then?

Wonder what he thinks

October 2 2010

The 2010 season. What did you lot make of it? We came out of it with no silverware. It was Marcus Trescothick's first as skipper. It was Jos Buttler's first as a first team player. It was the first in my experience without Phil Frost on the roller and mower. But how did it leave the club and what can we expect in 2011? Here I try and set the scene for later comments on what happened.

I always find the first frontpage after the end of a season a difficult one to put together.  It is the start of a difficult 6 months for a cricket feature writer because the county goes into semi-hibernation, the players go to faraway places where information is difficult and Bagpuss isn't going abroad any more! This season it may be easier.

Somerset went into the 2010 summer with high hopes of winning something.  The supporters went into the 2010 season expecting them to win something after the disappointment of the 2009 T20 Final when we played so well in the semi against Kent and then didn't turn up in the second half of the Final and gave the trophy to Sussex.  We'd done roughly the same in the 40 over competition quarter final and had been badly affected by the weather in the Championship.

New additions from internal and external sources were exciting prospects.  Jos Buttler had made his debut at the end of the season and found himself in his second match facing Brett Lee in front of 30,000 Indians in Hydrabad in a poor but exciting foray into the Champions League by the county.  We hoped for a lot from him but all worried that the pressure of having to learn how to keep wicket might affect his game and our chances.  The reason for that happening was the rise of Craig Kieswetter's England credentials as the keeper and opening bat in the World Champion T20 side.  We expected to lose our first team keeper for part of the season.

Externally we welcomed a number of 'newbies' to Taunton.  Nick Compton finally brought his name and skills to the county from Middlesex (where else?).  This had taken two years and the supporting public were not the only people expecting great things.  He was seen as the man to replace Justin Langer in that vital number 3 spot and Brian Rose had him in his sigths since 2008.

To fill an early gap we took on Damien Wright from Oz because our new international player Murali Kartik was involved in the IPL and wouldn't be with us until nearly the end of May.  Our first real international wicket taking spinner for nearly 10 years was eagerly awaited.  No disrespect to any of the slow men who had filled that position in the last decade (Ian Blackwell, Kieth Dutch, Adrian Pierson, Cameron White, Darren Cullen, Omari Banks, Max Waller, Arul Suppiah) but their main job was to 'stop' runs leaking.  They were not there to make significant inroads into the opposition batting line-ups.  Mushtaq Ahmed was our last real wicket taking spinner and Kartik was our replacement for him...we hoped.  He was the missing link in a side that was becoming really hard to beat but which found it difficult to win in the four day format.

We hoped for a pace development from the raw but fast David Stiff and the promising but injury prone Mark Turner. We also prayed that our slightly aged pace attack would survive the season injury free.  It was also a season where we wanted Peter Trego to play a more significant role with the ball and become the all rounder we think he can be.

We hoped that the massive contributions with the bat of 2009 would be the start of something regular from Arul Suppiah and James Hildreth.  We wanted to see the destructive power of our new captain Marcus Trescothick continue but we also wanted the side to rely less on his contribution and for the other 5 major batsmen to take more weight on their shoulders.

The pitch?  Well the debate about it has rumbled on for years.  The urban myths about its flatness continued into the second decade of the millennium but there was a difference this year.  Philip Frost the Head Groundsman who had been digging it up and putting it down, mowing it, covering it and sitting with it over night before games for 22 years was deemed 'reduindant' for the 2010 season and had left the club and his house on the grounds by the beginning of the summer.  Brian Rose had taken over management of the wicket and the boys of the groundstaff had the job of working the ground.  What were the implications of that we all wondered.

A season to forget or one to remember.  Anticipation and trepidation in equal amounts met the first match of the new season and I really don't think anyone expected what came next!!

A leisurely review of the season with my own personal view of what it all meant which is, as always open to comments from others. I'll look to get the next part ready for the middle of October - the series might be split by the regional AGM's of course.

Inspite of not winning anything, this must be our best season ever to tie in the 20;20 and the championship (and still come second) is a mighty achievement. One hopes that the frustration of being so close will spur them on for greater things in 2011.

As usual our problem was the weather. Because the season started early, the warm up matches (for us) were even earlier and we lost out on these because of rain. This meant we went into the first games of the championship "cold" and lost; a couple of draws could have made all the difference.

2011 should be really good.

Well done the team. Winter well.

I can't quite agree with WTE's assertion that it was the best season ever, as we didn't win anything.

Two trophies in 1979 and the 2001 season in which we won the C&G and came 2nd in the Championship usurp this season in my opinion. The smallest of fractions, decisions & events out of our control prevented us winning any and all of the competitions.

Expectations will be even greater in 2011, but if we prioritise our focus on the Championship with regard to planning and recruitment, I anticipate saying in 12 months time that we have just had the best season in the club's history.

I didn't see the 1979 version Norwich but we weren't as consistently this good across the whole team and across competitions in 2001.

I think 79 proabably has an edge but this lot are better than the 2001 version and outperformed them across two formats (there wasn't a third then) and still performed really well in the thirsd as well.

I'd take the season we just had over any and all seasons in which we won a one-day bauble but did not seriously compete in the Championship.

2001 is a contender for being as good a season because we competed hard in the CC that season, too, as well as beating Leics at Lord's.

I've been watching since 1948.

Even allowing for Botham, Richards and Garner together, 2010 was the best SUSTAINED performance throughout the season in ALL competitions. Even allowing for the fact that we didn't win a bauble, there was not a single match which didn't have something in it to play for - in not many seasons could you say there were NO DEAD matches.

Yes, I would have preferred a more intensive look at some of our young up-and-coming young players, but I can't begrudge BR and his men some hearty congratulations on the OVERALL performance, AND that is one of his critics speaking!

This was indeed a magnificent season. So many must-win matches, so many close calls.

Not knowing who would win the County Championship at Lunch on Day 4 of the final match.

Watching Notts just keep ahead of the D/L in the T20 Semi, then Pollard taking that catch on the boundary just before the rain came down.

Thinking the T20 Final was lost half way through the Hampshire innings, but still having my heart in my mouth as Zander ran up to deliver the final ball of the match.

Thinking Somerset could never hope to defend their total at the Lord's Final, and then watching Ben Phillips' awe-inspiring spell.

That was one incredible season. If 2011 can be the same, but with a little more silverware for the Taunton Trophy Cabinet, that would be just perfect.

I have missed your level handed post Jim it is good to have you back, I won’t ask for any detail of your absence I have a good idea why you were missing.

To sum up, it was one of the best seasons of cricket I have seen by Somerset for quite a number of years, it was just like one of your horses Jim in the end they couldn’t quite get over the line. Next year we will.

Hello,you old curmudgeon.
I am now able to access a computer most evenings, which means I should be around a fair bit more to pester you all.
I was devastated to miss most of the last season, life has a funny habit of kicking you in the maracas when you least expect it.
But,hope springs eternal,or so I'm told.
So here's to a quick Winter and another wonderful Summer.
And for those of you who may no longer recognise me,I'm the one with the mop of wild curly hair.
You have,been warned.

We haven't wandered off topic, Grockle. There have been some rather hairy situations at times this season.

Was it the best season ever? 1979 had more glamour, starrier players and better media coverage. Yet there is the case for saying this was a better team that played consistently well in the different formats.

The big difference of course was the bowling. It isn't to disparage the achievements of the batsmen. Trescothick, Hildreth and Buttler were excellent while Suppiah, De Bruyn, Trego and Compton all put in good performances.

But to have a virtually injury free attack that delivering consistently made all the difference. After the Stiff implosion and a fine contribution by Wright, Willoughby, Thomas and Phillips just delivered over and over again. The best Somerset seam attack since Caddick, Johnson and McLean in 2001.

And unlike that team (who relied on a solid Keith Dutch) we had a wicket taking spinner in Murali Kartik. Towards the end of the season we played every game like we expected to win.

And of course changes to both the wicket at Taunton we managed at times to be both green and dusty and the banning of the heavy roller made more results possible. In my view Brian Rose must take considerable credit for taking brave decisions on this front.

It all resulted in incredibly exciting games that only the long format can provide.

This though was the final fling of an experienced team. It would be unrealistic to expect Willoughby, Phillips, Thomas, De Bruyn to deliver such sterling seasons again. Our batting may be hopefully set fair for the near future. But we will need a lot more than Steve Kirby over the next couple of years to match the 2010 vintage..

Shouldn't we at least wait until a few games into next season before stating that "this was the final fling," for this group of bowlers, KT?

My point was it would be tough to expect them to repeat their performances though it would be great if they did, I certainly wasn't trying to write them off!.

Kirby can be seen as a like for like (hopefullymore consistent replacement for Stiff.

We do need another seamer to challenge for places - and replace Turner. Would love it to be a homegrowner, didn't Dibble have a good season?

I thought he did but the general response to "is he going to play?" was "he's done well in the seconds"

The confidence of the success of a move up didn't seem to be apparent which I was a little worried about.

Lewis Gregory had a good start but was fortunate in it. He did keep to his task well and got his reward but he was decidedly 'leggy' to start with.

However, whether they are ready or not they may very well be called to the party if we don't get anyone else.

"He's done well in the seconds."

Well, statistically he did better in the seconds than both Turner and Stiff.

20 wickets @ 20.6 (with a best of 8 - 21) as opposed to Turner's 15 @ 28.06 - as far as I am able to glean from those scorecards which appear on 'Cricket Archive.'

But he wasn't given an opportunity in the First XI, because of a relatively injury - free season for our bowlers plus the fact that we were in the running for all three trophies right up to the end of the season, thus preventing any degree of experimentation in the selection of the Firsts.

Somerset offered a new one-year deal to Adam Dibble, who was one of the leading wicket-takers for the seconds this season, and Brian Rose said to the ‘Western Daily Press’ in August: - "He (Dibble) has a good physique and we just need him to find a little bit more aggression and a foot of pace."

Let’s hope that he does, and doesn’t end up as yet another Somerset bowling prospect who fails for whatever reason to ‘make the grade.’

I, for one, won't be sorry if our youngsters are given some opportunities early in the season to prove whether they can make the jump from 2nd to 1st XI. Until they get those openings, frankly nobody really knows - more stop-gap signings will not help their cause, so my hope is that we stick with the young ones - BR has obviously previously rated them - he should give himself credit for that and trust them.

He was a surprising ommision from the Pakistan game however when he could have played but didn't. Lewis took the place expected to be Adam's.

Certainly the quote from Rose backs up the assessment of his prospects in 2010 from the local press.

I do find it baffling why Somerset 2nds deliver plenty of batsmen to the first team and yet bowlers making the grade are few and far between.

Who was the last 2nds bowler to make it through, Steffan? Trego?
