Sussing Sussex T20

By Grockle
June 14 2011

Down to Hove for a full game...we hope.  A few injuries in the camp seem to have decided the side we put out.  Alfonso is still struggling, Lewis has been stung by a wasp and Nick has a neck problem.  In comes Craig Meschede and Gemaal Hussain keeps his place.  With the weather the way it is at the moment we could do with an emphatic win in this one.

v Sussex FLT20 @ Hove Tuesday 14 June 2011

Scorecard

Commentary

The side starting this game is;

Trescothick, Kieswetter, Trego, van der Meuwe, Hildreth, Buttler, Suppiah, Meschede, Kartik, Hussain, Kirby

Sussex have won the toss and put us in and Murray Goodwin has started with his lower order bowlers with Ollie Rayner opening to Kieswetter who opens suprisingly.  Marcus gets down on strike and slog sweeps the young spinner for six but Liddle, who opens from the other end produces a maiden in his first.  We are 8 for 2 after 12 balls.  Parnell takes over three and probably will bowl no more after it as he seems to pull a hamstring just after the skipper hits him for a second six.  He finishes his over after treatment but it will be doubtful if he bowls any more.

Liddle continues the surprise and his first ball has Craig trying to swat the ball over the in-field.  He fails miserably and is caught off a skier as he miscues.  17 for 1 after 19 balls.  Peter Trego strides out but later in the same over he misjudges a slower delivery, top edges and is caught behind withot scoring.  18 for 1.  This brings RvdM out early and although he settles quickly we are still only at 24 by the end of the 5th (bowled by Luke Wright).

Marcus looks to push the score along and is doing his job well until he punches one halfway through the 7th and is well caught by an aware Wright on the boundary rope.  42 for 3 is not where we want to be and the skipper has gone with 33 from 23.  James Hildreth is the next man in, and the next man out within one ball as Rayner tempts him and he obliges into the keeper's hands. 43 for 4 and Jos Buttler finds himself in at the start of the 7th with RvdM having to push the score along.

Before the end of the 9th, Reolof makes another mistake getting under a shot for six  and falling short to be caught in the deep after the score is pushed just over 50.  52 for 5 and we did not need that at all!! Now it is down to Arul and Jos to turn this into something.  Terrible batting and excellent bowling, especially from Liddle and Rayner!  We are a long way from getting anywhere near winning this one with Panesar on at the other end now and little coming off the bat.  After 10 it is 54 for 5 - very poor!

The schoolboy cricket continues as Arul is up the wicket to defend against Rayner, he misses the ball and is STUMPED - DEFENDING!!  55 for 6 is ludicrous - simply schoolboy stuff.  Rayner is on for four wickets for almost nothing.  That becomes a five fer as Jos capitulates with a mistimed C&B 56 for 7 and this just gets worse and worse.

Meanwhile Craig Meschede has comeout to make his T20 domsetic debut and neither him or his partner Murali Kartik would have expected to be in in the 13th over trying to make something out of this carnage.  Not a lot is expected because Goodwin is just bringing on Rana Naved - just what you want if you're a Somerset fan!!

Naved does his job fooling Meschede with one he takes the pace off.  Craig comes up the wicket but does not get to the pitch of the ball and therefore simply pops the ball up in the air and is outat 76 to go and join his sheepish team-mates on the Somerset bench.  Gemaal arrives for the 15th and he and MK actually put some kind of defence up.  Mostly from the bat of the Indian we make it to 90 before he is bowled by Wright at the end of the 17th.  He goes for 19 - a decent score tonight but little to hope for as the last man Kirby comes out  to face Naved.  He survives a ball but we can expect little else and Rayner takes a diving catch as Hussain chips a slower Naved ball  up.  All out for 90.

I'll report on the defeat at the end I'm off to watch something far more interesting than this for an hour.  Terrible - if we play like this again we deserve to be out of this and Keiron will be making a trip for nothing.  This is as pathetic a performance in this form as I've seen from the men and it isn't going to get any better in the next 90 minutes I can assure you.

Well it wasn't actually a totally true assessment because the bowling and fielding effort by the side was a real mirror image of our batting performance.  But although we kept at the Sharks for 17 overs, Murray Goodwin saw them home and we lost by four wickets.  On to Chelmsford and Essex needing a win.

v Essex FLT20 @ Chelmsford Wednesday 15 June 2011

Scorecard

Commentary

Essex put us in and reap the whirlwind of last night's appalling work from the side.  Marcus Trescothick starts well but we lose Craig Kieswetter to Masters early for 7.  It is 27 for 1 with just one ball of the 5th gone but this is followed by a storming 36 off 21 balls with 4 fours and a six and we are 2 runs short of 100 when he goes at 98 with the captain in his pomp and just over 10 overs and 2 balls gone.

Enter James Hildreth and that was all she wrote!   His 64 off a mere 29 balls with 4 more fours and 3 sixes accompanies the Boss's highest T20 score of 108 in 62 balls with 12 fours and 5 sixes as we rack up 225!  The two men added 127 off 9.4 overs - brilliant.

But the rain is coming down and we have to hope for at least 5 overs of play and some tight bowling.

Of course the abuse will be against my comments and not the side's performance.

Our only hope is to have a field placing consisting of 4 slips and every one else saving one, and pray!.

The wicket does look to have a bit in it, a few stopped or stuck in the pitch and a few bounced quite a bit.

I don't think 90 will be enough, but if there is a clatter of early wickets, there must be some chance. If they get off to any sort of a start though, I fear we are doomed :-(

Fair does - you may be right. However I have always believed that decent spinners or slow/medium in 20/20 are an absolute must in the tip-and-run game. The batter has to put the pace on the ball, whereas the quickies very often help the hitters.

I think Tres has missed a trick, or two. When Kartik was bowling we needed to have more men in as they were picking of the singles building an innings. We need someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck, why not Arul?

Re: Sussing Sussex T20

Good question my little canary. The answer is I think that we shall qualify. We are capable of beating anyone and caqn wn 3 games in the knockout. I thinkthe batting will have learnt soemthiung from tonight and the bowlers didn't do badly. Add Alf and it changes. I think my basic instinct is that we have got our one really bad performance out of the way. 2 more wins this week and we are still in the mix.
I could be wrong of course.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)
Date: 14/06/2011 21:48

Yeah, the critical issue in the field was that you cannot allow uncontested singles when defending a low total

We needed to risk losing the same more rapidly if we wanted to win -- meaning we needed to squeeze the new batsmen

This was especially the case when Kartik was bowling to a relatively new batsman -- I thought we made the same error when the same bowler was bowling at Lord's in the Pro 40 final last season

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: geordie moonraker (IP Logged)
Date: 14/06/2011 21:50

I think the answer to the run rate question is that we are deemed to have had 20 overs ans Sussex have whatever they take.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: ronnies (IP Logged)

I think thats the issue SJB. I think we are flat track bullies who will bat well at Taunton but struggle to adapt in this form of the game away from home apart from Tres. If we dont find that then Im afraid Geordie I think you are wrong we will not win this. We may not even qualify if we cant get any games on at Taunton either.

Teams away from home now have a plan against us (insert and take the pace of the ball) and we dont have an answer. Big issues tomorrow at Chelmsford. Two teams playing poorly against each other. If Friday is to be off then we must win this. Lose and it will be difficult.

Compo might have been good today, or if we were chasing, putting Arul at 3. 20 runs short in the end and missing some sensible accumulating,

Decent effort in the field. Hope the injuries aren't too bad. Maybe just hand/finger bruising ?

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)

Marcus himself did say that we don't seem to adapt to the fact we're not batting on the flat track at Taunton, though

And looking at a couple of those early shots, you have to say that's spot on --- Craig got nowhere near the pitch of his shot and Pete virtually tried to pull a pretty full delivery -- neither man had his 'eye,' in at the time as they had not long been at the crease

There were other poor shots, too, but it was those two that were the "We're playing at Taunton," shots

And, yes, my keyboard is having a water-related malfunction and the full stop key no longer works [but may start working again at some point in the future as defective keys have slowly been becoming operative again, one by one]

Just realistic Grockle I think thats what I would describe my comments as. No point camouflaging the truth in my opinion.

t20 is a funny game and can change quickly so nothing would surprise me if we won tomorrow. Equally it wouldnt surprise me if we lost......expect the unexpected. Who would have said Hants would have won last year out of the 4 finalists?

By the way after 6 games if a team have 3 defeats and 3 victories how many points do they have? Guess what!! thats how many we have........interesting!!!!

Moving on to Chelmsford tomorrow, Essex will be without hard-hitting all-rounder Graham Napier, who picked up a Grade 1 hamstring injury at The Oval last night.

They have drafted in seamers Chris Wright and Maurice Chambers, and former captain Mark Pettini into a squad of 13:

Bopara, Shah, Walker, ten Doeschate, Styris, Foster, Wheater, Phillips, Southee, Wright, Master, Pettini and Chambers.

I bet Max watching from the dugout wish he was out in the middle bowling on a used wicket that was spinning.

I bet he did, Mike

And if we'd assessed the wicket correctly [before the game] then Max might have played instead of Craig M - then again possibly not as Marcus seemed to reject the notion [when asked] that the spinners were going to be his best weapon in this one and, of course, Arul's bowling was ignored

No need to camouflage your opinion Ron but I have to agree with CP's proverb at times when you so confidently call it the 'truth'.

So is Taunton a flat batting track then boys and girls? Thought we'd been saying that it was much more of a testing wicket now than it was? Please make up your mind which side of the question you fall because I've personally seen some of the most competitive cricket there this season I've seen in a long while.

But based on your assessment I assume James won't play for England. Jos is not the talent we thought he was. Craig will struggle to play for the national side on anything but a flat Test pitch? Pete has no international future. Arul is only a decent player on flat pitches.

Shame we rated them all when they can only play at one ground...damn!

Isn't it more of a case that they may be out of touch because of a lack of gameplay? The pitch was "sticky" for everyone really or are both those arguments completely overshadowed by the fact that Somerset play at Taunton?

Everything can be so clear can't it? But is it really? Or is just harping on another argument that we've all heard before. Marcus mentioned the lack of game practice as well...why is that discounted? Because he said the magic T word and it's everyone on the Taunton bandwagon once more?

We may be complacent and idiotic in their shot selection once they find themselves in this mode but suggesting this side can't bat on any other surface means this season is over as is every other one until we move from the nightmare that is HQ - we've been here soooooo many times before.

As I suspect you know all too well, Grockle, I think folks are talking about the one-day wickets at Taunton - I certainly imagine that that's the context in which Marcus himself was talking

We've greened up some of the CC pitches but I've heard nothing to indicate that the tracks for the one day games have been anything other than excellent batting tracks?

Re: Sussing Sussex T20

In low scoring games, the side batting second has a big advantage in that they know the target. If they can keep wickets intact and rotate the strike, then they should be able to pick off the bad balls.

I think we set off as if we wanted 200. Another 5 overs of Marcus would have seen us OK though and he didn't do much wrong really. It is a bit of a no win situation though, if you try to bat sensibly, then fall short. folk will say that you should have taken full advantage of the first 5 overs, when the field was up.

But why are the side paying well and inconsistently on both types at home?

Either they can't play on testing pitches or they can...which is it?

You can't have it both ways.

I wasn't aware that they had played inconsistently on the plum home one day batting tracks? I thought all one day home games this season had ended in victory (or been abandoned without a ball bowled)??

The CC pitches are a bit different but then it's a different game in the CC as don't need to hit the cover off it. Based on your own comments on the CC it sounds to me like they've sometimes tried to play in almost one day mode - as vs Warks - and failed and when they've succeeded on the spicier pitches they've been a bit more diligent?

Have been out today, so not seen any of this on TV, but have read all the comments and online match reports. Clearly a bad night at the office, esp on the batting front, but probably on a two-paced previously-used pitch?..sounds like Max might have been a good call.

Anyway, decent effort by the bowlers and by Tres. Seriously need to up our batting game tomorrow (similar to how we were for game two after a poor game one ten days ago).

I agree we still have a good chance of qualification for last eight - at which point it's anyone's competition. There do seem to have been a few sides who started well but have gone off in their last 2 or 3 games, and some vice versa.

I'm still right behind my team - take it out on Essex, lads!

But AG - are they playing on flat tracks or not? You keep making the differentiation between different types of pitches oin the same ground?

Either the ground is causing the problem or not. Or are the bits of grass they are using for one day games FUNDAMENTALLY different to those they are using for four day games?

Your premis seemed to be that the batsmen are having problems on non Taunton pitches...well is it that or not?

Or is it only relating to some Taunton pitches that are causing the problems?

We are talking about the circle of grass in the middle of the county ground I am assuming or are we only talking about some parts of it?

Yes, Grockle, it's the same square but the pitches, I'm sure, are prepared with different goals in mind - in one day games we prepare pitches intended to produce tons of runs - in the CC I think it an open secret that we are seeking to give the bowlers enough to work with to gain positive results.

It's not necessarily pitches away from Taunton, per se, it's sloooow pitches. I think we've been poor on slow pitches in one day cricket for many years - especially against spinners on such surfaces and especially in T20.

We might rock up at Chelmsford and encounter a flat-track belter, in which case we will probably power our way to victory. But if it's slow again then we simply HAVE to adjust our game accordingly - running the singles hard etc and looking to play with a bit more patience.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20

My assessment of the match.

The pitch.
All of the Taunton square had the same treatment in the winter; the preparation of one day pitches is the same with all counties they are left completely dry with no grass on it.
The difference with last night’s pitch it has been used several times before my guess more than twice by the amount of spin there was, would Max have made a difference we will never know it seems, he bowls and he can bat and the way it is going we will never know.
We have had one game of t20 at Taunton so any games coming up will be on fresh pitches so they should be still good batting tracks.

Somerset’s performance.
The batting.
I will not go into that we all know what happened.
Marcus showed his difference from the rest of the team if he had put more power into the shot he got out to ---- the game can be all ifs.
The fielding.
Our fielding was good but not as good as the opposition, two years ago we would not have seen Arul Suppiah drop that catch, Marcus and our new signing took two brilliant catches and I think I remember Jos taking one as well.
The Bowling.
I believe we bowled ok considering the low total we had to defend, should Arul have bowled it is hard to say if he would have made a difference with that low score, Hussain went for six an over but he did take two wickets.

On to the next match.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)

It was the third game on that pitch. Therefore, when we started batting on it, it was 80 overs old.

At that point, that should only have been the equivalent of batting at the 20 over mark, if chasing, in one of the old Gilette Cup/Nat West Trophy games.

I suspect that recent rains may have come too late to help in the preparation of that particular track... that excessive dryness meant that it played like a track that was much, much older as it was.

Who knows how Sussex would have played it, had they batted first? They might have felt pressured by our batting line-up into trying to go too big, leaving them in the same mess as us. Or they might have sized things up more quickly and batted sensibly in search of a score of 130 or so.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20

AGod, all groundsmen water the square by hand anyway, after our washout on Sunday a Somerset groundsman was watering the Somerset square on the Monday when I looked in. Sussex previous match at Hove was four days earlier so there was time to prepare it.

If as you say that was the third match on that pitch they have only used one pitch.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20

It matters not now. They have to look forward and learn.

That is the job of the coaches/staff and the players themselves. If they can't get it right tonight and learn from last night then we probably need to look at how we aproach this form of the game and how our form swings so much (thats not just in the t20 its the CC too).

The issue of Taunton is a good point. There has been some great cricket on it the last 2 years but you always get value for hitting shots regardless of what type of wicket it is. I think it is that which changes when we move away not the wicket particularly. I think we still play that way.

Dont know who mentioned it but someone said do we not think Hildy will play for England and Jos etc. as they play on the Taunton wicket. This season correct me if Im wrong neither have set the heather on fire (have stuggled some would say) so the answer to that question is a resounding no I dont think they will play any time soon.............unless they get the finger out.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20

We will certainly need a greater number of CC runs from both Hildreth and Jos in the second half of the season if we are to haul Durham in - particularly so if Craig K misses games because of England ODI duty.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: Ronniesabre (IP Logged)

we need a greater barrage of runs all round so as not to put pressure on MT. I know there have been camoes from others but if I were an opposition captain/coach at present my team talk would be along the lines of get Trescothick and we are half way there.

Its up the rest (and rememeber it is a much feared batting line up) to prove that idea as being wrong.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: Blub (IP Logged)

At the start of the Sky programme last night the Sky people noted something along the lines of; "can the Sussex bowlers stop the most feared batting line-up in the country" or words to that effect.

Presumably there is a good amount of trepidation when facing Somerset, so when playing Somerset at home it would make perfect sense to prepare your wickets to be a little sticky, particularly as someone else has already noted on this thread, this is not the first time that this type of wicket has undone us.

One would imagine that, playing half of the games away from Taunton, we would be better prepared to manage the batting on these variable wickets. My feeling is that the batting performance owed less to over-familiarity with Taunton, and more to do with being too slow to recognise the state of the Hove wicket.

From memory, did we not spend a lot of last season in T20 and 40 over games, choosing to chase, even on batting friendly pitches. I wondered this when Marcus said that we would have batted had he won the toss.

It is sad to report that of our 4 England hopefuls, they all got out to, what looked like, very poor shots (as opposed to being beaten by the bowler, or bad luck).

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)
Date: 15/06/2011 12:37

To be honest, I didn't think there was very much of the bowlers getting the better of the batsman on either side.... it was mainly the batsmen of both sides giving it away with witless play.

I thought Kartik bowled beautifully .. far better than anyone else on either side. That, at least, is hopefully a good sign provided that whatever he went off for at the end was something trivial and he can still play on Monday.

I hope that f we ever get in last night's situation again, when Kartik's bowling, we put more men in the circle, making it more difficult for the batters to build a partnership by picking off easy singles. We have to be pro-active, play an extra batsmen / fielder for Kirby and bowl Arul instead.

Now 143 runs - although Essex only 9 wickets down but Styris unlikely to bat.

Essex scored less than Marcus managed single-handedly!

If we play like this we can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime.

If Suppiah is not picked to bowl then he could take his place? Although I like Suppiah's fielding so would keep him in. Pollard's bowling was also very good for us last year, I knew he could bat but his bowling was 2nd best to Alf I think in the averages.

I would go, on a going day something like.

Trescothick
Kieswetter
Trego
Hildreth
Buttler
Pollard
Suppiah
Gregory
Thomas
Kartik
Kirby

Looks good to me.

That was an important match for us. If we had lost to Essex after losing to Sussex, and then rain robs us of a win on Friday evening, we would be pressured to pick up the momentum again to ensure we qualify.

Now even that arch-pessimist BJ muts believe we can do it ;-)

If T20 is your thing or not, it is still important to the clubs success in that the extra revenue helps strengthening the team to compete in the championship. This is the 1st season I've had a membership(Championship) in 5 years due to family commitments and the attendance at Taunton seems alot bigger than what it was back in those years ago. Maybe it's because the team is a genuine title contenders but how many might be those who 1st got into Somerset via 20/20 and are now supporting the clubs other forms of the game?

As I've said a hundred times before ("so why are you saying it yet again? Ed), I've got no intrinsic objection to T20 per se, providing there is not so much of it that players' technique suffers. My only objection is to the loud music associated with it that in my view is utterly irrelevant and adds nothing to the spectacle of any value whatsoever.

There must be a few, I couldn't get my partner to even watch cricket on Sky until I dragged her to Glos v Somerset 3 years ago and now she literally watches every scrap of Cricket on TV and wants to go to Taunton on a daily basis it seems. No doubt that we will be shelling out for a Platinum joint membership next season. So you can attribute that to the rise of T20 - even though she doesn't like it as much !(much prefers P40/LVCC stuff)

On a non marital basis one of my mates started coming to T20 games to do the "drink till you stink" routine, bought a full tournament ticket last season, is now bored with it and wants to see CB40.

I'm not sure he'll ever progress to CC1 but he is following the game now from a seat nowhere near the bar - though he can still drink most people I know under many a table.

I wasn't convinced when it started but I've come around to it's role. One thing it does do very nicely, it tunes up your fielding unit in mid season and that can't be a bad thing.

As some have said, if nothing else it can be a "blooding arena" for younger prospects even if you aren't fighting for silverware.

I assume you are serious so here ya go.

Steve is one of the top three wicket takers (6?) in our T20 side with Kartik and Lewis I believe. His average is high (21) but he bowls during the front 6 and the bottom 4 of the innings. He takes wickets.

He's also an active fielder with a big heart - can't think of a lot he's got wrong in the field - better fielders have made as many errors. I don't think we hide him but I agree we need to 'locate' him effectively.

He has experience and he gets up the batsman's nose in the front half (that second maiden against Sussex was inspired).

Arul - they won't bowl him (either it's his confidence or they think they've got enough slow men)

James? Taking pace off the ball is not the only objective. It still needs the bowler to put the ball in the right place - you can't seriously be suggesting we bowl a guy with NO first team overs to his name this year just because he is of a pace batsmen SOMETIMES find difficult to hit in T20?

I was of the opinion that we should not bowl him in all the T20's but until we produce a side with more consistency than this we need his heart in the middle of that bowling unit - nobody will give less than 100% when he is there AND HE TAKES front end wickets. He's this year's Mark Turner - but he is far more effective because he does the job Marcus wanted MT to do last year. AND he does it nearly every match.

Interestingly, no Ramprakash in the squad of 14:

Hamilton-Brown, Davies, Roy, De Bruyn, Maynard, Spriegel, Wilson, Schofield, Batty, Ansari, Linley, Dernbach, Nannes, Arafat.

I would see Hilda as a real option IF he'd kept his bowling up but as you say he stopped a while ago for some reason and therefore would be in no fit state to suddenly take it up again.

You may be right Mr B. Once Pollard is here AND bowling well (we hope) and IF Alf is fit again then there's every reason to rest the mad red head. But presently he's one of those ingredients that keeps this lot together when they start to mess it up.

Fully agree with N Hughes about T20. There are several points in its favour:

1) It brings in much-needed revenue.
2) It increases the supporter base, encouraging people to watch cricket who otherwise wouldn't.
3) It IS exciting (despite the indifference some on this site profess, which seems to disappear once Somerset reach the knockout stages (Sm111)).
4) It demands a high degree of skill (inventive shots, bowling accurate yorkers, etc.), even if the skills required are different from other forms of cricket.
5) Since Jacques Rogge, the head of the International Olympic Committee is apparently a fan (see The Guardian, June 7th), it may one day even become an Olympic sport and permit cricket to one day rule the world.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20
Posted by: Tumbles (IP Logged)
Date: 17/06/2011 09:49

6) it gives some of the fringe players in the squad a chance too. For me one of the most pleasing aspects is seeing the young uns get a run out from time to time. Also I've really enjoyed seeing VDM playing - I hope we get him back next year.

Re: Sussing Sussex T20

Re Point 3;

"Excitement."

In my view it is exciting only if the game is close. None of the clap-trap marketing hype surrounding it excites me in the least. If it's a close game it's exciting for the same reasons that any other game of cricket is exciting.

Although Marcus has expressed considerable disdain for the Hove surface on which we played that game, that's been the only T20 game that we have played so far that involved any tension whatsoever. All of the other games have been walkovers.

There have also been a very high amount of games in the competition, overall - it seems to me - for which the description "walkover," would be apt*

Now Finals Day last year WAS very exciting, because the two SCCC matches were both superb contests.

* Is it my imagination or do there seem to be a greater number of walkovers this year than ever before?

7) It gives the team the opportunity to play in front of a big, noisy, animated crowd - a buzz for the established players and experience for the new recruits to the first team. After all, they are all performers and in the vast amjority of cases they want people to be watching what they are doing!
