Eleven good men and true - Warks CC1

First 4 dayer since 09
By Grockle et al
July 18 2012

A late start this morning after some heavy rain during the night but the game is off and running with an unusual bowling attack from us.  Max Waller startsa four day game for the first time since 2009. Gemaal Hussain is back for a very important match for his career. We have won the toss and shown faith in the attack by putting them in.

v WARWICKSHIRE CC1 @ Taunton Wednesday 18 July 2012

Scorecard

Commentary

Alfonso has a limited choice of bowlers for this game with 4 of our probable considerations unavailable - three at the U19 World Cup and Steve Kirby still on the injury roster.  The side is;

Barrow, Suppiah, Compton, Hildreth, Keiswetter(w), Buttler, Trego, Meschede, Thomas(c), Waller and Hussain

Max gets his first home run out in a long game for 3 years and Gemaal plays only his second game of the CC campaign.  For both of these players this could be a career changing game.  Other than that it is a strong batting line-up (Marcus is testing himself in the seconds match) but an uncertain bowling one with Craig Meschede (it would be nice if his own county could spell his name right on their own scorecards) and Arul making up the fifth bowler spot.

We win the toss and decide, based on the green pitch and the conditions, to give ourselves a go with the ball.  That one isn't really a surprise but the unusual opening pair of Gemaal and Pete is a little more of an eye opener.  Chopra and Westwood open for the visitors and although GH's second ball is dismissed by Westwood to the Caddyshack boundary the first 9 overs only result in 24 runs being scored and the attacking field of 3 slips and a gully are kept busy by the bowlers questioning the batsmen.

Unfortunately the weather intervenes early and we will be looking for another good start after the spell that took the players off at 12:20 with 9.5 overs completed and 25 for no wicket to Warwickshire.

Back on at 12:45 and in the 5 balls possible before the big rain arrives, Pete Trego got one to move away and spit at Westwood who is caught behind by Jos for 10.  27 for 1 as an early lunch is called.

Tea will be taken at 3:10 as the rain is still belting down and the umpires will inspect again at 3:30....  gonna be one of those games.

If cricket does take place I'm afraid you'll have to ask the commentators about it because I'll be there doing that after 3:30.

The umpires decided at 3:30 to have another look at 4:15 and although the sun is out the groundsmen are preparing more covers for expected rain before then.  I'll be very surprised if they have any more play today given the weather coming in behind the Botham Stand

Just like magic, a smigen before 4:15 the rain starts again and the inspection is put off until 'it stops raining'.  10 minutes later it REALLY starts precipitating and the game is off for the day I am afraid.

10.4 overs, 27 runs and 1 wicket is the grand result for today.  The information from the Bears dressing room is that they are upset because this stuff today was not predicted and they think they have a good chance of rolling us over in this game.

I'd therefore like to see dry conditions for the next three days so we can prove them wrong!!  Let's hope for better tomorrow.  I won't be at the game I am afraid because my daughter is becoming Ms Grockle (BA Hons) tomorrow.  Back on Friday with more to talk about "Insh' Allah"

Day 2

Most of the people reading this will have analysed Thursday's play and in some cases seen more than me.  The general perception is that Warwickshire got too many because of an indifferent bowling performance, Chopra did well against us once more and Troughton did well after being dropped on 13.  "Must do better" was the analysis of most posters and the captain himself.  So on to....

Day 3

Starting at 387 for 7 off 107 overs, the opposition's first objective was to deny us the full bowling points in the first 3.1 overs, but second ball 'Dr Who' puts one in the keeper's hands off Alf and as I settle into my place Patel pushes the Bears to 400 before providing a big edged upper cut to Compton at fine leg going for 6 4 balls into the 109th and we get the points!!  Alfonso has a five-fer and has got us there with 2 balls to spare before putting the icing on the cake by sending Wright back to the pavilion first ball courtesy of a demolished leg stump.  All out for 400 with 1 ball of the 110th to spare.  Well played captain, maybe some of the comments overnight spurred the man on but equalling his career best for the club with 6 for 60 off 19.5 is all the man can do really.

The other figures are not wonderful.  They go from Arul (12/3/33/1) Pete (25/5/84/1) and Craig M (16/3/64/1) to the two men needing good performances; Max (17/2/72/1) and Gemaal (20/3/70/0)

Now it is down to the batsmen - opinion is that we need a big innings from Compo probably and that if one goes they may all follow.  Predicted reply? 231 and a follow on from the great and the good .

Arul and Alex come out with a job to do and reputations to improve.  Woakes opens from the River and the first over passes without incident providing 2 runs.  Barker takes the first from the OP and has Arul in trouble almost immediately, dropped off a big inside edge with ball 1.  A big LBW shout comes with the third and the Somerset man is lucky to survive.

However, he does and pushes the score on to 19 with a couple of beautiful boundaries in there by the end of the 7th.  These kinds of starts sometimes mean you either aren't there for long or a three figure score is on the cards.  Hope it's the second because he needs it.

Unfortunately, he then pushes one past the bowler and takes a quick single, he gets in but Alex, who had to stay in his crease because it hadn't passed the bowler doesn't make his ground at the other end as Wright throws the stumps down. 19 for 1 at the start of the 8th and very unfortunate for Barrow.

Lunch to Tea

Arul worked to make up for the instinctive but unfortunate run out of his opening partner by playing some absolutely sublime shots before the lunch interval - mostly off Chris Wright and went to an excellent 50 from 52 balls with 8 boundaries.  Nick Compton came in to do the job he has done so well of solidly anchoring one end of the Somerset innings, he plays no chance forward defensive shots, he gives the bowlers nothing on 'uncertain' balls and he puts away the loose stuff.  Importantly though he is unhurried and unflappable in his present form.

Unfortunately at the other end the batsmen partnering him are not as solid.  Arul once more gets a start but then finds himself in the doldrums for a couple of overs and seems to lose his momentum, when he gets a ball to hit then the authority has gone and the edge is taken by Ambrose and we go into lunch at 102 for 2.

After the break, James Hildreth doesn't stick around for long as he finds a top edge and is caught by Chopra in the slips for 7 off Riki Clarke.  Meanwhile Patel is gradually getting 'stuff' at the River end but only to the new boys - Nick seems to have no prblem, getting well forward and being non plussed by the 4 fielders crowding the bat either side of the keeper.

Craig Kieswetter arrives at the crease and announces himself by clipping everything that strays legside into the outfield.  He is moving at pace and seems to be the perfect foil for his partner at this point especially against Barker and Wright from the OP end.  He works with Compton to move the score along and passes his partner in the 30's (NC had 25 when the keeper came in).  The 50 partnership arrives but that is about it for the England man as Patel tempts him and he finds the hands of Evans with 44 to his name - another player with a start but nothing more.  155 for 4 and the follow on total of 251 becomes a focus of the home side as Buttler replaces his fellow gloveman.  Jos is missed by Ambrose off only the second ball he faces and Somerset fans have to worry against a spinner who is starting to find bounce and movement on the pitch as it sits in the sunshine for almost the first time in this summer.  Unfortunately it isn't the whiles of Patel that does for the young Somerset batsman, it is his own poor shgot selection as he tries to murder the wrong ball and we have to wait for an age for Woakes to catch him in the deep for 20 - wrong shot, poor decision, wasted wicket!

195 for 5 leaves us woefully short with the batting resources running out. Pete Trego is next in but Patel is starting to run smoothly and he gets the allrounder with his best ball that goes away from Trigger and pops into the hands of the slips.  PT can't buy a run at the moment and we have to look to his possible allround replacement somewhere down the line Craig Meschede for a way out of this present crisis.  206 for 6 - 45 needed.

Craig is no luckier though.  While looking to help Compo, he also gets a beaut from Patel (almost the same ball as for Trego except this one has a little extra in the bounce department and takes the shoulder of Meschede's bat) and the slips pouch another at 226. This brings up Tea a little early

Post Tea

Alf comes out at the start of the third session needing to provide a captain's contribution while we get another 25.  He doesn't however as Clarke gets one past him into the hands of Chopra with only another run on the total.

The press box prediction of not making the follow on total seems to be really on as Max Waller strides out to face a slow bowler on his game and his side needing another 24 to stay competitive in this one.  Based on Max's batting performance against Scotland on the weekend we aren't that optimistic and the man decides to show us all by stroking the first ball to the boundary with no problem whatsoever.  What is more he continues to do that until we pass the necessary 251 courtesy of a drive to the boundary from his partner and a cheeky 2 from himself past the legside field.  Well done Mr Waller.

It can't last though and doesn't.  Patel gets Max to pop one up to Troughton quite soon afterwards and then is not particularly charitable to the young man as he leaves.  Game to Max though because he stopped him getting us in again and won the psychological game because the older man lost it a little.  Hussain is the last man in and is there for just one ball before Patel gets his best career figures of 7 for 75 and has the press boys scrabbling about for his details because he's not the best known spinner in the world it seems.

254 all out,  146 behind with 5 sessions left.  It isn't wonderful but it probably is a little more desirable than being asked to follow on.  Not a great btting performance though except for the entirely dependable Nick Compton who is presently averaging over just over 93 in the CC and is well ahead of his next rival (Ashwell Prince some 300 behind him) in the first class batting averages.  They don't come fast but they keep on coming - and we are very grateful for that this season.

Alf takes over new ball duties from Gemaal, partnering Pete for the start of Warwickshire's second.  One person suggests that the best thing that the Bears could hope for is to be bowled out cheaply because they aren't the best side at setting the fourth innings run target for their opposition.  Westwood and Chopra are in so we shall have to see how the end of this one pans out.

The skipper gives way to Arul 5 overs in and Pete hands the ball to Gemaal from the River.  He is the man who gets the first breakthrough when he catches Westwood in front and takes his first CC wicket of the season.  32 for 1 sees Evans comeout to partner Chopra and the two men take the score to 50 with the first ball of the 14th.

The next victim however does not come to pace but to the spin of Arul Suppiah who fools Evans, he doesn't get to the pitch of the ball and pops the last ball of the 15th to Buttler and it is 55 for 2.  What is more, Buttler isn't finished and proceeds to run out Troughton at the start of the 17th.  60 for 3 makes it interesting wth 6 overs to go.

Max is introduced for the 19th at 61 for 3 and goes for 3 with Arul continuing from the OP. He then takes the last of the day with the Bears 211 ahead.  It's 212 ahead at the end with 3 down (66 for 3).

Day 4 will be one to watch at least.

Possibly the most important day of Somerset's 2012 Championship starts in sunshine with Warwickshire looking ready to play and Somerset a little hesitant in their progress to the wicket.  The recently talked about 'body language' is not impressive and is picked up by the early press men almost immediately.  Does this side look like they are realistic contenders in this game and/or in the Championship as a whole?  Is there a level of belief in their mission?  Not convinced myself I have to admit.

Alf starts at both batsmen without slips - bit surprising after last night but one of the guys tells me he did this last night as well.  Are they pressing for the win?  Do they believe that they could get them out twice with a total they could chase or are they already prepping for the draw?  Dangerous plan if they are but it could be that they believe the seamers have more chance of getting the poorly performad shot catch than the edge.  We shall have to see.

Gemaal seems to be the man as far as his captain is concerned as with the first ball of his second over he has Chopra LBW at 74 for 4 - length ball tot he leg side, missed it and one big scorer is gone.  Give us a day GH.  Restore the faith of the faithful.

This spurs on his skipper who gives Amrose something to hit and he hits it to one of our best fielders at midwicket - Max Waller who plucks an Exocet out of the air as if it is fielding practice and it's 75 for 5.... a different feel and set of motions in the middle now.  The Warwickshire men are figgiting and scratching about and now the fielding team look like a group with a sense of purpose - how this game changes.

It's Gemaal Day!!  In the 28th he takes out Rikki Clarke courtesy of another good catch from Alex in the Somerset infield (four ball hammered to wide mid wicket) and then in the 30th dismisses his fourth man, Woakes LBW and it is suddenly 82 for 7 and we're into the bowlers!!

Now there is nothing better on a morning than watching Thommo bowling with blood in the water.  Barker gets an evil bouncer which he fends off with everything but the bat, the ball rises and falls into Craig Kieswetter's hands and another one bites the proverbial.

We already know however how difficult the Warwickshire tail can be and Patel did for us in the Edgbaston fixture.  He is as dangerous here, especially partnered with Darren Maddy.  These two look to settle and get the 300 the Bears would like.  Gemaal is starting to look like he needs to have a breather and we are all waiting for the shift as the two batsmen try to gain control.  The 100 arrives in the 35th but Thomas is also dangerous in these positions and gets Patel to upercut one to Hildreth before they get fully away 119 for 9.  This inspires his opening partner into an extra effort and his well deserved five fer comes when he has Wright LBW at 124 and closes the innings with figures of 13.4/3/48/5 taking 4 for just over 20 in an hour and a half this morning to put his side needing 271 off 78.  A game is definitely on!!

Somerset then try to undo all the good work as Barrow fails, caught by Maddy off Woakes' first over for nothing and Arul is comprehensively cleaned up by Barker with his second ball as the big man gets prodigious swing and flattens his stumps 2 for 2 with only 8 balls bowled and another clear up job for Hildreth and Compton.

Lunch at 15 for 2 and an afternoon of application expected from the Somerset men.  It isn't what we get as James wafts at a loosener from Woakes and the first post lunch ball he faces and it is 15 for 3, Hildreth caught behind.  So, we sigh and hopefully look at the next man in to make a significant stand with the only stable batsmen we seem to possess!!  If there is ever a day for Craig Kieswetter to come of age and show exactly what he is clearly capable of... then this is it.  No fireworks, no loose shots just workmanlike batting and accumulation of non risky runs.  An innings, not a spectacular innings, just a substantial one.

He shows he has the shots with some early shots but he also looks for a risky two when there is no need so i am once again yet to be convinced.  But he is still there when the real game starts with the introduction of Patel for the 15th over at 41 for 3.  He is also still there when the 50 up arrives in the 18th.

Craig's own 50 comes up in 52 balls in the 80's (exactly the same number of balls as his first innings half ton) and significantly, Patel is removed from the attack in favour of Rikki Clarke about the same time.  Whatever it was he was getting on Thursday he doesn't seem to be getting today.  The 100 arrives and soon after at 115, the 100 partnership.  The almost constant Warwickshire appealing is certainly getting on the nerves of more than one supporter around the place (it is enfuriating you have to agree when Clarke or Patel look like they've been mortally wounded as another demand to dismiss the batsman after a bat induced shot into the leg side from a long hop is not given out LBW immediately).  It is going to the songsheet at the moment but the fat lady is nowhere near the building yet and will not be until we are this many down with 100 more runs on the card.

The next target is Tea and I have to apologise for the lack of updates afterwards as I am taking over the vocal duties with Mr Kerslake so you'll have to post your questions there and we will try an sort them out from the microphone.

CC bowling attack vs Warks

I'm assuming Rehmann won't be there or we'd have heard by now?

I believe George is unavailable?

Question; If neither of the above is available then, given the amount of rain that there has been, should we play either Waller or Leach simply for the sake of a balanced attack? Or should we play one of them only if we think they may play a major part in helping to win the match?

For a seam attack I suppose we can pick from Pete, Alf, Craig M, Lewis and Hussain.

What did people think of Hussain vs SA - worth a place?

I'd suggest we probably will pick Craig M alongside Pete and Alf.

And then it will probably be Hussain or Max or Leach for one place?

Rose says today (Sunday) that Rehman has an interview in Lahore tomorrow (Monday) re his Visa, he pretty much admitted he was HIGHLY unlikely to play Wednesday.

He confirms neither Dockrell or 2 Overtons available due to under 19 workd cup, and Kirby not fit until Essex 1/4 final at earliest.

So i assume Pete will bat at 7 as normal, so that leaves Hussain and Thomas as 2 of the 4, then 2 out of Waller, Meschede and Gregory. We'd like to think Waller HAS to play but i wouldnt be surprised if he was the one to miss out.

Assume top 6 will be, Arul, Alex, Nick, Hildy, Craig, Jos.

So in a game we simply have to win to have a stab at the title IMO we are without five of our attack. What a season this has been for a team being decimated.

Thinking about this further. We need to get warks out twice to win this. I'd therefore get as much bowling as poss in the team . I'd therefore leave out barrow for this game and open with Gregory . Team would be. AS, LG,NC , JH, CK,JB,PT , CM, AT,MW and GH. That means 5 seamers and 2 to spin and a strong batting line up too. I'm up for this now.

Think Barrow might be pushing Arul for that opening spot?

Gotta say though in a season where the side has been decimated please be aware that we are still talking about having an outside chance of winning it.

It would be a season to beat all seasons if we stayed in contention but I doubt there are many sides who would be doing what we are with about 50% of their resources available.

We will do very well to beat Warks given the gaps. Hussain will play but they need to bowl him in short spells I think. Waller will also play surely, although it may be why Barrow does not take Arul's place as they may look to rely on him for slow bowling options.

Craig looked good for an all rounder place and we have to hope Lewis is getting his bowling issues sorted and can hold his part of the side together.

Irrespective of how it comes out I just want to see the batsmen back up the bowling. Too often this season the boys pulled in to cover have done a very good job only to be let down by the men with the willow.

An all around good performance whatever the outcome will do me.

Cannot understand why somebody suggested that Barrow might get in the CC team ahead of Arul? Massively unlikely, I would have thought. Barrow's not yet done nearly enough to suggest he might supplant Arul.

I'm not even sure it it's certain that Barrow will keep his place, or whether Jones might come into contention?

I think the perspective fromt he poster is more on what Arul hasn't done than what Barrow has but I have to agree with you AG. They'll play Arul as the second spinner at least.

What is it with the downer on Arul?

He has batted well in the CC, easily the best in the Durham win, and then played low down in the T20 and cb40 with little chance of reversing poor displays. When he opened against Durham in the semi final last year he basically set up the win.

To me, there is a case to play him up the order as he plays spin/slow wickets better than most, and that is a recurring weakness in the side, and can accelerate plus bowl. Today's batting against Scotland is not proof of the correctness of his omission.

Have to say I like Ronnie's above selection. Plenty of bowling, solid 1-7 and people who can bat a bit at 8,9,10. Waller surely has to play as the only standing specialist spinner, although now we appear to have a second part-time spinner in CK(?!).

I tend to agree! Arul appears to be the fall guy most times as far as the batters are concerned, and his SLA is useful. I'm still not convinced that Nick is a better T20 or 40 over opener than Arul. In view of his superb CC form, it will be a tragedy if he inadvertently tries to transfer his biff/bang/wallop shorter form shots to the CC.

An amazing sight in TA1 this morning! A large yellow thing in the sky to the east! Is it an alien attack? Could it possibly be that there won't be any rain today? Will that mean that our bowlers will just run all over Warwickshire tomorrow? Or could we be all out for 50 again?? Keeping everything crossed!!!

I'd think he simply has to prove effective over the next 2 or 3 games or he'll be back out of the team and the third year of his contract may be paid off?

Was hooked for 4 when he tried to bounce the batsman second ball but has settled in a little now. 25 for 0 with the covers on (may be off in a minute but BIG black clouds over the Quantocks).

He does need to sort out overs 5 to 8 of a spell when he loses it a little. It's a big game for him and Max especially but it looks like an on and off game over the four days for everyone.

Max may or may not have a bit of leeway, I guess? It depends on Rehmann's visa

I assume we don't see George again this season?

U19 world cup final is on 26 August. Group matches finish on 16 August but all teams that do not qualify for the knockout stages go into a Plate competition with similar knockout rounds. By the end of the competition all teams will have competed for a ranking from 1-16. So our U19 team memebers will be unavailabe until about the beginning of September.

Day one photos.

This was short and sweet, I managed to take six photos and this is four of them.

http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p490/cricketphotos1/Cricket%20Photos/2012%20Somerset%20Cricket%20Photos/Somerset%20v%20Warwickshire%20LVCC%20starting%2018th%20July%2020/VarunChopra4runsoffGemaalHussain.jpg

Gemaal didn’t start his bowling to good this is one of the loose balls being hit for four runs by Varun Chopra.

http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p490/cricketphotos1/Cricket%20Photos/2012%20Somerset%20Cricket%20Photos/Somerset%20v%20Warwickshire%20LVCC%20starting%2018th%20July%2020/IanWestwoodgoodballfromGemaalHussain-1.jpg

And then Gemaal settled down and bowled several good balls this one beating Ian Westwood’s bat.

http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p490/cricketphotos1/Cricket%20Photos/2012%20Somerset%20Cricket%20Photos/Somerset%20v%20Warwickshire%20LVCC%20starting%2018th%20July%2020/IanWestwoodgoodballfromGemaalHussain.jpg

This was the second ball to beat Ian Westwood’s bat off Gemaal Hussain.

This is Ian Westwood ct Jos Buttler bld Peter Trego, Peter Trego also beat the bat several times after the first few overs.

Having watched this morning's events, I do wish the bowlers would look a little ANGRY when they get hit for four! Hussain particularly, but it applied to them all really. About half a dozen very good balls, but interspersed with half volleys outside off stumps and a few wides. Unless Alfonso can work miracles with his own bowling or he can bring himself to trust the slow men (mainly because the pace needs to be taken off the balls) then IMO we could be staring down the barrel of a large total (having put them in). However, lets hope I have to eat humble pie (which I am always happy to do if appropriate).

They get hit for four that often they're probably used to it. We are a side just drifting Fromm game to game in cc cricket. Someone in the hierarchy needs to grasp the mettle and give us some sort of rudder. Rose not even there today checking on Marcus to see if he can make Tuesday. T20 now the clubs priority despite what they say publicly and that saddens me somewhat.

I think the defining moment of the day was when Tregs dropped a sitter off meschede when Troughton was on 13 I think. PT was livid with himself for the next few overs. At the time these things dont appear to affect the result, but in hindsight we could easily have been batting after tea.

“The pitch just seemed to get easier to bat on as the moisture went out of it and in the end it was typical Taunton.

“Our seamers got a bit despondent and there wasn’t much there for the spinners either. Now we face two days of hard work to avoid defeat.

If Alf actually said as above, then it confirms what I saw in the team on the field. I'm afraid that a GOOD captain doesn't give that HUGE BOOST to the opposition!! Sorry ALf - give up the job and concentrate on what you do best when not distracted by leadership questions. Thats my opinion.

Who needs the truth when there's all this stuff already written for our captain to use - what was he thinking...

Having watched today I am afraid that three things became clear.

1. Hussain does not show the ability to make it at Division 1 level. There is no devil in his bowling and to be honest he did not look like taking a wicket. Even if he has one more year left on his contract I would pay him off because he is behind 7 other seamers on our staff.

2. Max is not a county championship bowler. In limited over cricket when players must attack him he is fine, butin 4day cricket they just wait for the at least one bad ball per over and punish it.

3 A.T is not a captain. There was little encouragement coming through, when we were faced by the Troughton Woakes partnership, it all seemed to drift. We were led to believe that JH did not want to remain captain, but I am sure that if he was told how much he was wanted, and as I believe to be true, the players want and respect him he would do the job.

Have to agree entirely Tops on points 1, 2 and 3. Well said.

The most immediate action that is required from Rose is for James Hildreth to take over the captaincy.

What is the point in Rose watching our Second Eleven game v. Essex instead of the Warwickshire game? Trescothick was never seriously going to be considered for the Twenty 20 quarter - final, and nor should he be.

Most strange in my opinion.

As far as today's play is concerned, it was all too predictable in my opinion, though I confess to not having been there.

We are looking down the barrel in the County Championship at present.

Re: Eleven good men and true - Warks CC1

Unfortunately i agree with all 3 points.

I had high hopes for Hussain, and he "looks" like he should be a good bowler, nice action, tall etc, but there is just no venom there, he's the nicest fast bowler i've ever seen, just no agression.

Max really was poor today, i like him and had hoped he'd grasp his chance but there was little threat, hated his field too, whethere it's him or Alfie but straight away he had 3 men on boundary, and often even 4 or 5. Surely to start you've at least git to have 2 close catchers and a ring, if they hit over top or we start leaking runs fine defend a bit but not from the start.

As for Alfie and the fielders today, honestly the flatest i have ever seen the team look, no buzz, energy whatsoever, i appreciate it was tough but little things like unusual fields, gee-ing up the bowlers, running between overs, bit of short stuff with men on leg side, we just let whole thing drift from such a good position at 162-6.

As Alfie says all we can do now is bat for 2 days and try not to lose 20 wickets, where as at5 2.30pm we were right in the match.

Very much looking forward to Tres and more so Kirby to return to get them going again.

The quote makes little sense, surely?

If - as he implies the pitch became a flat track - then why should it be such hard work to make 20 wickets last 5 sessions or so to avoid defeat?

I think there is a VERY big chance Trescothick will be playing Tuesday and most probably Sunday too as a warm up.

Whether he should or not is another matter, but that will be Brians logic as he is most definitely being considered for Tuesday, more so i guess if Morkel is not released.

Sad to admit that Arul bowled much better today than Maxie. For those of you wondering why we played any spinner, be thankful that we did as we would otherwise be in danger of losing points for a slow over rate. It has been a poor match for AT as captain - no energy in the field as yet again I have witnessed another double century 7th wicket partnership at Taunton!!! The big discussion point in my section of the Tres stand was the complete lack of any on-field motivation. Any time Steve Kirby is injured, we should bring Steffan out of retirement!!!!

Re: Eleven good men and true - Warks CC1

Under -estimating Arul when you call him an "occasional bowler".

He's been a better match day spinner than his compatriots in more than one game over more than one season

I still don't understand the move to Alf as captain when he returned but asa I don't know James' take on this - did he instigate it or not - I find it hard to comment on what action should be taken.

Seems obvious that the Overton's at least have overtaken Hussain in the pace bowling stakes and the man has a lot of work to do to convince people that he is worth a third year. He looked good at the start of yesterday but seems to look less incisive as his spells get longer.

The T20 is realisitically the only trophy hope for Somerset this year. To be honest the CC dream has gone on longer that it should have given the obstacles put in the way during 2012. One has to assume however that we are stronger in the batting department than the bowling presently so this game isn't lost yet.

Some two weeks ago I posted comments made to me by a steward stating that there were issues/divisions between players, coaching staff and the Director of Cricket.

Having attended all of the home games since these comments were made, particularly yesterday's performance, I am beginning to believe that there was credence in his comments.

We are never going to win every game, we will have "bad days at the office", but come on lads how about displaying some team effort and could the captain please display some leadership ! If he cannot, then lets appoint another captain asap.

My average return journey time to Taunton on British Rail is 5 hours, and it would be nice to think that my efforts and enthusiasm in getting to Taunton would be matched by enthusiasm, effort, and leadership on the field of play.
Alas currently it is not.

Finally, please BR do not roll out the injury crisis, international call ups etc as an excuse for the lack of team spirit, effort, or lack of captaincy skills, as they are not connected. All I ask is that whichever team is available for selection is that they take to the field with pride and show the paying public some effort and spirit. I have been supporting our team for over 57 years, and will continue to do so, but come on, we need improvements, and quickly

I really do feel uneasy about Marcus potentially being rushed back for Tuesday.

Brian's comments about MT being 'a bit shaky on his legs,' do absolutely nothing to convince me that a Tuesday return is appropriate.

All make excellent points. T20 is the only chance now this season but I believe that's what the club wants. Cc to me takes second place despite the lip service. We need to look at the county market get 2 of the best players we can possibly get and stop p&ssin bout trying to sign overseas it's now too difficult. Some will have to go too. Personally I don't think hussain or max will be here next year . Saddens me re max. That way with the emergence of some young players we might get the challenge we all crave but at the moment are any other team affected by injury non test call ups unavailibility as we are and it's now showing.

Good job we have an "outsider" as captain at the moment to be the scapegoat. Perhaps James has been an awful lot more astute than we give him credit for. Let someone else take the poison chalice of leading an uncompetative team, at least 6 first choice players short and shorn of it's entire bowling attack and it's talismen and then take over when our stock begins to rise. We were humiliated a number of times earlier in the season - particular performances in the CB40 spring to mind but selective memories seem to forget that Thomas was not in charge then!

Certainly agree with posters regarding recruitment, overseas stars are now a waste of time

If this squad can at least ensure we stay in Div One of the CC, then we can hope for a refreshed skipper and group of supporting players, with fewer injuries, to be able to attack that competition properly in 2013.

No one can say that I am one of the 'win everything' brigade, BUT even when things aren't going so well, I think we can expect players to CARE and show they care by showing some spirit. OR are the rumours near the truth that there is not harmony within the changing room? Marcus's absence will not have helped, of course.

Rumours are rumours OB - they cloud issues until they become truth or disappear.

I think I'll go with what I can see or read in the factual observations of others whenever possible.

You'll all be able to listen to the

We'll try and give you a first hand assessment of body language etc as we start to chase whatever target the Bears put in front of us... though last time I commentated on a Somerset v Warwickshire home game I saw something in the region of 14 Somerset wickets fall I seem to remember.

Grockle, I'm like you and not convinced by rumours. I prefer to judge on what I see myself, AND IMO there isn't much self-belief about in the home camp at present. Being the external optimist I am sure it CAN be turned around, but probably too late for this year.

I have no idea what role, if any, Alf has played in current, apparent attitude in the field.

I can say that SCCC looked thoroughly committed at the Oval and performed well in the field. And I can say that James was captain that match and clearly out-captained his opposite number in that match.

I can also say that we looked sorry in the field at Lord's against Middx 3 or so weeks later. And Alf was captain for that game.

And it sounds as though we've looked a little sorry for ourselves in this one. Indeed, Alf's own reference to 'becoming despondent,' seems to itself reflect that?

All the pessimistic stuff above has not mentioned that at he start of this match we were just 23 points (i.e. just over one win) behind the championship leaders.

Unfortunate run out of Barrow by Arul. Calling for a quick single while Alex is stuck in his crease because the ball was passing the bowler. Wright picks up and bang go the stumps with Alex face down in the dirt but short. 19 for 1.

Buttler and Kieswetter dont know how to build an innings.

However, in their defence they may have been instructed to go for it here in that we do have to press on to at least try to get a result from this.

I think the team seems to play more or less in a mode of 'Compton anchors and the others go for it.'

I'm not sure, though, that that reflects instructions from Brian Rose. I would think not as Brian spent most of the winter stressing the merits of prolonged occupation of the crease.

Therefore, Brian may be somehwhat ticked off with wickets given away in trying to hit sixes (especially trying to hit a six having already hit one the previous ball!)

I dont buy that AG.

He has hardly bowled since the Middx game in early June and still his batting fails time and time again. Dont know if its confidence or technique or both.

His innings v SA seemed to indicate he was back but sadly not. Anyway all he was doing then was hitting it rather than thinking about it. A Somerset team with trego in it is better and you always felt in good hands with him coming in later but sadly not at the moment.

Re: Eleven good men and true - Warks CC1

Date: 20/07/2012 16:21

In terms of the CC though, Ronnie, this IS his first innings since the previous occasion on which he bowled in the CC, back at Lord's?

So if you are talking about a poor season of CC returns with the bat (rather than just a low score here) then I think it may very well be related to the herculean efforts that he has had to make with the ball.

Re: Eleven good men and true - Warks CC1

Well he'll be above Gregory and Meschede for a while yet I'm afraid. He is doing no worse than them with the bat and is way ahead of them with the ball.

If you want to name a name I think Craig Overton would be the name and he has some way to go yet.

The sad thing is that after a number of seasons hoping he would get more from the ball, he now does and can't buy a run. In this game he probably got the best Patel ball of the session. Craig M got the second.

Over-reaction maybe.... the man held the bowling together for the first half of this season or wasn't that noticed? He has quite a bit more in the credit balance of his account than others who could be mentioned.

That said I have no idea what sort of season Pete has had in 4 day cricket, but my perception is not nearly as good as limited overs stuff.

Re: Eleven good men and true - Warks CC1

I think Pete has himself tweeted that he can't buy a run. And perhaps if he was being judged purely on batting merit then he'd be under more pressure.

But... as he's been the leading bowler all season long, it's a bit irrelevant and means he has the time to find his batting form.

I think I'd put Trego down as the 2nd name on my teamsheet after Compo for this seasons efforts.

Wonder if Pete is putting too much pressure on himself re his CC batting, He said after his SA ton that his performances "weren't acceptable" to him, & I suppose the tourist match gave him the chance to let off steam.

But his attitude is exemplary & let's get real, without his bowling this year we would be in a very sorry state indeed.

It's blantantly obvious the amount of talent that there is at the club & when I look at each county player for player I can't help but think that we must have as easily as strong a line up as any other county, if not stronger, but when is this promise going to translate actually onto the pitch?

At 46 & supporting them since the mid 70's I am beginning to wonder if a CC will ever happen, that's all.

I've said it twice on here, once on the front and on radio but I'll keep saying it in case people aren't reading too quickly... Pete got Patel's best ball (closely followed by the one that got Craig M).

So it had nothing to do with a lack of application or some kind of upset by the supposed machinations of the dressing room discontent.

He got beaten by the best a bowler in a career best bowling spell could deliver early in his innings.

I think that the balls which got Pete and Craig M were ones Patel will treasure. As far as the dressing room situation, I've heard the rumours, but there appears to be nothing to be gained by giving them official credence. Far far better for it (if there is any) to be sorted internally with no publicity. That will undoubtably come with any later auto- or bio-graphies when playing days are over!

I would be happy to discuss with him the pros and cons of handing the opposition first class propaganda material, such as "we were rubbish and can't possibly win!".

Day three photos.

Some of the batsmen got in playing some good shots, and then got themselves out playing bad shots.

Max Waller’s short time at the crease was entertaining and helps us save the follow-on.
He is seen here avoiding a short ball from R Clarke.

I Westwood given out lbw not playing a shot off G Hussain.

G Hussain didn’t last long (one ball) bowled J Patel.

Craig Kieswetter played some good shots, this was one of his four’s.

I wonder what Alfonso Thomas was thinking playing this shot, he was caught V Chopra bld R Clarke.

Arul Suppiah also played with ease placing this ball between the fielders for four runs.

Like Grockle has said Ronnie,Pete has a bit of credit in the bank at the moment!
I support my county and back everyone that plays,so maybe what i said about Lewis/Craig was slightly wrong although i have not seen performances from them in the past 2 seasons to feel they warrant a place in the team ahead of Pete.
We all know what Pete can do with the bat as he has proven time and time again he could change a game in the blink of an eye and im sure he will do so again this year.
His bowling as others have put has been outstanding and something that even i did not believe he had in him.
Thats the joy i suppose of being an all rounder,if one fails you always have the other to fall back on.

A quick bit of number crunching (thanks to bbc site!)
I picked out 7 all rounders in Div 1 and heres there stats so far this season.
Stokes 419 runs @ 32 11 wkts @ 27
Wright 200 runs @ 33 2 wkts @ 58
Clarke 530 runs @ 88 10 wkts @ 25
Adams 133 runs @ 12 46 wkts @ 15
Berg 335 runs @ 41 26 wkts @ 19
Chapple 264 runs @ 17 21 wkts @ 31
Trego 300 runs @ 27 34 wkts @ 27
I dont think Petes season looks out of place to any of these if im honest.
Clarke stands out with the bat and Adams with the ball but Pete is not far behind on the bowling front.

Well said BO. We all want Somerset to win. Whether its mesch Gregory or Peter doesn't matter as long as they win that's what matters. Tomorrow I want Peter to hit 100 and stick right down my throat. Just get the feeling it ain't gonna happen though. Chasing 350 onto wicket my money ain't on trego at this stages and I doubt yours either if your honest..warks are quite an
Impressive team and one we need to aspire to. Peter could look at woakes as someone he wants to be like. Wickets runs, England the lot. Anyway enough of this you have your view I have mIne. Tomorrow is another Somerset day.

Well currently lead is 212, if they bat until lunch at 5 an over that's a lead of 360ish with 60ish overs left.

I feel Warwickshire are very much a dont lose team so even this may not be enough for them.

I'd be surprised if they declared before lunch and in terms of saving the game we don't really want to be batting then either.

Wickets early will really help slow their scoring, we all want a win but realistically that is VERY unlikely, unless we bowl them out for 170/180 in which case we may be looking at 320ish off 65/70 and even that wouod be a huge ask v Patel on 4th afternoon.

My hope is slow progress during the morning with regular wickets and a very conservative declaration at/after lunch leaving us 55/60 overs to survive.....

You are right Ronnie - "it ain't gonna happen."

I am travelling now, so won't get any news about tomorrow's play until Tuesday / Wednesday at the earliest.

I simply hope until then that we can hold out for a draw. However, if what has been suggested by some of those who have been watching this game, that there has not been a lot of fight displayed by us so far, then I do indeed fear the worse - not only for this game, but for the remainder of the season.

Furthermore, the return of Trescothick (whenever that comes) to take hold of the reins again, will not in itself be the panacea that many expect – in my opinion.

I take Grockle's point about very good balls from Patel accounting for Pete and Craig M.

But the view of the W Mids radio guys was that, overall, this was probably Patel's worst bowling display of the CC season.

That, if at all valid, suggests considerable complicity in terms of him getting those figures from some of our players.

I assume that Arul bowling 8 overs to Max's 4 does not bode well for Max, moving forward.

I think Grockle was possibly right to question somebody calling Arul an occasional bowler. But I think Arul himself has less faith in his bowling than he should do.

Meanwhile, Arul is a bit of a counundrum with the bat. Talented, beautiful to watch. But seems to be dismissed whilst well set a bit too often.

I think that I may be one of the people that has been accused of having a "selective memory"

Let me make myself quite clear on the subject of Alf T.

1. Given the current squad he would be one of the first names on my team sheet in all forms of competitions.

2.He would not be my choice of Captain or Vice Captain

3.His decision to let CK bowl against Scotland IMO was ill judged and disrespectful to both Scotland and our other front line bowlers that were playing on the day.

4.I do not support the situation where he plays in the IPL, takes the dosh, walks back into the team and is made Captain.
Perhaps this situation is reflected in the current apparent lack of team effort/spirit/moral ?

If Nick C could come to terms with "Tip and Run" (T20), then either Nick or James H would be my choice to understudy the Boss.

Comments please !!

I think Nick Compton is far too self-absorbed to be a captain.

I think you can see that in some of his running. For example with the run out of Suppiah at Edgbaston they said that Compton didn't even seem to notice that Aul had called and was running.

This whole captaincy thing should hopefully soon become moot with Banger's return.

But, in a normal season, in which he is not compelled to bowl 9786 overs, then why not look at Pete as understudy to Marcus?

AGod, you are making what appears to be a judgement not merely on Compton the cricketer, but also on Compton the man. If it applies in your mind only to his cricket you should make this clear. Many sportsmen are very different people on the pitch to off it.

I asume you do not know him personally. Even if you do I don't consider it appropriate to make that sort of comment on this forum.

I'm talking about cricket as, last time I checked, that is the only thing that somebody mentioned he should possibly lead - a cricket team.

Compton puts me in mind of Boycott and I would not want 'fiery,' captaining a cricket team either.

Probably the most important days play of the 2012 CC today and two people in the press box have already made mention of the relative body language of the two sides coming out to start play.

Warwickshire men striding to the wicket to get on with it.

Both men reaching their positions before the Somerset men get to the strip.

No prompting from anyone and I have to agree with them I'm afraid.

Just a comment. There's a little more to leading a cricket team effectively than just the cricket AG and what you see on the strip is not the whole person or Steve Kirby would be the most unpopular man in the game!!

This is the story of our season, the inability to finish teams off when 6-8 wickets down. It's why we are 4th and not 1st.

270 now is a big ask.

Sorry Tumbles

Don't you classify dismissing 7 Warwickshire batsmen for 58 in a session 'finishing a side off'?

Patel made 21 (he made a lot more last time) and I think a number of people would suggest that the Warks 'tail' is possibly the best in the CC overall.

The reason we are chasing 271 is because of the inability of the BATTING line-up to produce a total NOT the fault of the bowlers who have done a remarkable job this morning.

Warks 8 down at Edgbaston, Warks 6 down, at Taunton, Notts at Trent Bridge.. amongst many other games we've done well but not quite polished teams off. Today we did, bar the 9th wicket granted.

So the comment seemed out of character today when the side WAS polishing the tail off. The 9th wicket was Maddy and Patel not the 10 and 11 so that far less relevant than you suggest

Now the big question is whether, by your first statement, Warwickshire are top because they've got away with having their tail not polished off or because they have a bloody good tail who are difficult to polish seeing as two of your four examples of us "failing" are to that same team. (The same team we comprehensively cleaned in this game so your first innings 6 for??)

They don't seem to have too many rabbits and we aren't the only side that have struggled to dismiss them this year.

Hmmm a side winning the Championship because of the ability of their tail (now there will be some interesting analysis for AG should this come to pass).

I'd still put forward that our problems in the Championship this year have not been in the bowling department despite the massive effect of injuries on its personnel.

It hasn't been that we haven't put other sides away, it is that we have not punished them with our own batting line-up anything like effectively enough. Surely the batting has let down the bowling far more times than the bowling has let down the batting.

I do feel our 'much vaunted batters' have lost some of their 'vaunt' recently and the bowlers have done well against the odds.

Pleased to see that we may have a new seamer available for regular selection! Gemaal deserves a break or two now. He has suffered from injury and loss of confidence. Hope this fifer will boost his self-belief and lead to him getting many wickets.

Last evening I (and several other posters seemingly) would not have us down to be just 129 short of victory with 7 wickets in hand! For a side with poor leadership and dressingroom dissent this is a pretty good effort IMO.

Anyway by the time I finished reading the thread we had bowled Warwick out and had a chance of winning. I suppose one of the great aspects of County cricket is that among the more mundane times, the regulars can be rewarded with 5* performances such as that by Kieswetter, who has been getting some stick recently.

I reckon that there will be many Grockles feeling really thrilled about today and excited for Craig, with the added bonus that summer seems to have arrived and it's the cider festival at Wetherspoons!

What guts did Gemaal have to leave the ball and ask them to make him hit it

How cool was Peter Trego

How near to death was Roy Kerslake

How many cats have been thrown among Championship pigeons by this result

How good was that Kieswetter innings - who can't create an innings then

How much of a sod was Barker to get so close to taking it away from us.

Could that be the confidence booster that Gemaal needs? How did he look in Warks second innings? He got four lbw's which suggests he bowled straight some of the time.

Re: Eleven good men and true - Warks CC1

Thank the batsmen for doing their jobs by all means but let's keep the bowlers in mind - under massive pressure they provided the platform for this this morning.

I'd be thanking Gemaal for this before anyone else if the CK innings hadn't been such a massive part of this for the man and the county.

The batsmen nearly didn't do this and we need to keep that in mind. When Craig went so did the composure at one end until Max and Gemaal came to the crease. Pete waited but had to leave 10 and 11 to give him the opportunity to win it.

Jos, Craig M, Alf MUST get this waft outside the off stump out of their repertoire.

Nick got a good one that spat. Craig was very unlucky to find the fielder. The rest? Well they nearly made it impossible to win this.

But win it we did and we need to take that achievement in context. With injuries up our jacksie from the middle of April, we have not lost a CC game with a bunch of youngsters and they have kept us in the Championship through to when we start to see our expected first team players returning.

This is an awesome achievement for a significant group of Academy boys and whatever happens from this day on don't forget that. We are here in no smal part because of the Overton's, George Dockrell, Alex Barrow, Craig Meschede and Lewis Gregory. They took up the challenge when asked to. They gave the more experienced players something to play around and held up their inexperienced ends when asked to.

That's my first response to those who may complain if we don't get a trophy this season that this has been another failure as a season. It isn't yet. There is now more to play for but even if we come up short the achievements of our youngest squad players cannot be marginalised in 2012

Please don't tell me we've achieved nothing in 2012 if there is no silverware. We have players with possibly a decade in front of them who will bring you those things sooner than probably expected because of the issues this year. If you have to be, be grateful for small mercies.

But only if you have to be.... we still have 2 to go for before that scenario.

AMAZING result. I'm happy to say Hussain has done marvelleously, and CK has at last proved he has the stature and determination to run Prior close. In this match his keeping has been excellent and his batting has fulfilled all that earlier promise! I am happy to enjoy some delicious humble pie for supper!!

I aged a few years listening to the end. But they done it, which will only give the team more confidence going into future finals and other important games.

Well done Keiswetter, great innings given the context, and Hussain, can those who were there give their thoughts on his bowling?

See the difference a won game makes? Third in the CC with a depleted side that can only get better when players return to fitness, and playing most of the rest of our matches at fortress Taunton.

I last posted on this forum back in April after we managed to pluck defeat from the jaws of victory at Edgbaston. I was highy critical of us then for not being able to pass the finishing line when it was in sight.

Today, in the spirit of fairness, I must congratulate Somerset for doing just the opposite in the return fixture.

Funny how sport..as with life itself..has a habit of often evening itself out.

Today was a fantastic win by our team..at the end of a totally brilliant day of Championship cricket.

It was all started by Max yesterday. His vital runs helped us avoid the follow on and made today possible.

Today GH really came of age as a Somerset player. Well Done! I hope you will now have the confidence to go on and develop more as the bowler we all hoped you would be when you joined us.

To Craig K..congratulations on such a great innings. Your exciting strokeplay was also balanced with a meticulous defence and an excellent temperament. I've never seen you bat better.

Plaudits too for Nick Compton for once again doing what he has done so well all season, glueing our stroke players together. And to Peter Trego, having a rough time of it of late, but for keeping his head and getting us over the line.

I truely believe we would have lost that match today back in April. That we didn't, shows how the side has grown and is slowly becoming mentally tougher. We may or may not win a trophy this season..but it would be nice to think today's achievement has helped lay the foundation for a success not too far down the line.

Well Done Somerset. Even the sun shone all day!

We're just a 1 man team, take out Compton & we'd be relagTed by now. CK can't build an innings, just a 1 day player, PT's bottle has gone, GH can't bowl for toffee, dressing room turmoil, body language of losers, good at throwing it away when it's nearly in the bag.

What? We won?

I started typing a reply on here this morning at 15-3 to enquire whether the game was lost when Warks batted first, but just decided to wait until the game was actually lost before asking the question

Gemaal bowled straight and a consistent line. Alf got the smell of fear in his nostrils and did what he has taken time to do this year but what he is so good at.

Then Nick held the reins and Craig let fly in a controlled but lethal manner. The way he went to 100 and 150 was excellent. I could have been even better except for finding Woakes. Top of the bowling averages, top of the total sixes in the CC. The boy is coming along.

At no point was this certain but at no point were we out of it. It ebbed and flowed all day and we were damn lucky it came our way after nearly gifting it.

But here we are with Banger trotting on and off the pitch and looking ready in the nets at lunch...

For a night all is well in the camp of glorious Somerset.

Best day i have ever seen at HQ, simple as that.

We did not have a prayer at the start of play, not a sniff.

Then after a glorious day in the sun at 6.10pm on 4th day we sneak home by 1 run.
At 15-3 we were gone, at 259-5 we were home and hgosed, at 263-8 we were back in trouble and at 269-9 with Hussain due to face 5 balls from Barker we were all in a right state.
One day games have there place but nothing can beat today for a proper finish to a proper game of cricket.

Huge character from many, Compp was outstanding, he and Max got us past follow on in 1st dig, Compo today was equally as good as Craig in totally different way, at 0-1 he dug in and supported Craig brilliantly.
Thomas in both innings and Hussain today bowled excellently, Warwicks looked scared stiff this morning and we pushed it home superbly.

I am now confident we dont need to look down the table. We ARE in the mix. We have the best batsmen in the country due back for last 6 games, 4 of which are at home of which we've won all 3 games, 1 rained off) We have Kirby due back now, and "hopefully" an overseas spinner at some point!
We have Notts left to play and with a bit of luck and a fair wind no reason we can't stay in the hunt up to September.

When I went out at about 2:00pm this afternoon, I felt surely Somerset had no chance of arguably doing Middlesex a favour by winning this match. Therefore, it came as a pleasant surprise when I returned home to find Somerset had won, although I wasn't so happy when I realised it means Somerset overtake Middlesex in the table. However, it is still quite a good result for Middlesex, as it opens up the title race, which wouldn't have happened had Warwickshire won.

At last my heart beat and blood pressure have returned to normal levels.

What an amazing day - the best that I have ever watched live - and the best possible advert for CC Division 1 4 day cricket.

Hopefully, we shall do it more easily the next time we get ourselves into such a good position. Jos's dismissal was the turning point and lead to so much pressure building. Even Peter was incredibly nervous playing out a maiden over from Patel with only 2 needed to win which included a number of false strokes and a leading edge which did not go to hand!!!

The only blemish on such a brilliant day was when I asked politely a spectator in the Tres stand to desist from using his mobile phone during play. In return, I received the most amazing and vicious rant in which the most amusing accusation levelled at me was being called a right-wing fascist!!! As he spoke with a Brummie accent and had his card beribboned with a "Wolves" logo, I naturally thought that he was a Warwickshire member. But I was wrong - he was one of ours - and I am ashamed that he is.

Hopefully the Club, our stewards and most importantly us members can do much more to stamp out this practice which does spoil our enjoyment of the cricket.

Do others think this is worthy of a separate thread?

He's certainly an attractive player. But conditions were so unchallenging for the batsmen that these were batting performances to be respected rather than savoured.

It's a good job this match is limited to five days, otherwise England might face about three weeks in the field..

Humility is a thing I thrive on. Being humble means saying you don't have all the answers is so invigorating!! Now feeling so saintly I can continue to have a few more 'IMOs' which are completely wrong, but who cares!

Despite one or two failures the whole team can take credit for an amazing turn-around. The only thing that I will claim credit for, and meaning it - was that midway through the second day having lost so much time, I expounded the theory that the only we could possibly win was to declare 149 behind and dare Warwickshire to set us a target! Almost correct, but of course we didn't declare and they didn't voluntarily set us a target!

Fantastic victory. Well done all round. CK obviously, but also Gemaal, who has surely justified Brian Rose's signing of him in one performance. Not least for blocking out those five balls!

Incidentally, I gave up on us winning when we were so far behind on first innings, then returned to Cricinfo to find that we had bowled them out for next to nothing and were already 20-3 in the second innings, despaired again, then came back home to find we needed 12 runs with 5 wickets left, rejoiced, had to go out again, then came back to find we had sneaked it by one wicket. Incredible.

It still mystifies me why a lot of people, including ALF, felt that Warwick getting a big first innings score, meant we could only play for a draw! Unless Alf is the master of kidology and threw Warwick players into a wobbly! It was pretty obvious that if we got within 149, we could get them to set us a target! What I didn't anticipate was Warwick collapsing so badly in their second innings, and Craig K playing the innings of his life!

Let's face it, we'd be gutted if we were 222 runs ahead with 7 wickets in hand on the final day of the match and ended up losing.

That could and perhaps should be the sort of loss that makes Warks' players think;

"Does that sort of thing happen to sides that win the CC?"

Well of course it does as most 'prophets' on here have been predicting Warwickshire to walk the CC1 this year since about the end of April.

Funny old game cricket - tends to bite your bum the moment you show any level of 'forgone conclusionism'

Huge game at Lancs next week, tends to be result pitch and in Lancs position guess they'll be keen on a result.

With Tres back (hopefully) and Kirby, if we can get an overseas spinner sorted too then we'll be in with decent shout in last 6 games, 4 of last 5 at home where we have in effect a 100% record so far...

A pity Mr Tennant had to bring up the South Africa thing. I do think it is about time to put that to rest.
Also I'm not sure that his figures for Compton's season agree with those of LoL, although I haven't rechecked.
Who to believe? No contest.

Have to agree with you Bobstan... not sure why it came up in this article - seemd to have no relevance at all to the subject matter. He wasn't talking about England or anything.

I shall bring it up with the great man this afternoon.....

Fear not OB, summer (or at least a slightly cooler version of it) has reached the shores of the Mersey and no rain has been seen for over a week. There may be the odd shower around at the end of the week, which may or may not get south Liverpool, but the Aigburth ground drains well (straight into the river I should think) and anyway Liverpool gets far less rain than its Mancunian relative.

I asked him about the SA reference seemed to have something to do with their contrasting styles based on where they learned their basics

That is, I suppose, plausible, Grock. As a reason for mentioning it, I mean.

Still rather he didn't emphasise it if not strictly necessary!
