Northern Trend or Yorkshire End?
By Grockle et al
May 24 2015
We welcome the second Northern side to face us on the filed of the Championship in the last fortnight to Taunton today. Can we continue the winning ways from Trent Bridge against the next county up the country Yorkshire? Questions about whether Rehman should play abound along with those about WHERE the skipper should play and HOW the top five are going to play in this game. We have yet to have a confident start in a game - even the Notts game had its collapse or two. We need the points and Yorkshire are a little sparse at the moment so now is probably the time.
v Yorkshire CC1 @ TAUNTON 24 May 2015
Scorecard
Commentary
From a CC1 win to a T20 loss to a CC1 selection, it must start to get confusing for the county selectorial committees at this time of year. Although there are few surprises that can occur with the West country side as we have few resources to mix and match. We can mix within a sqaud of about 13 but new faces are not going to be popping in all over the place should the present batch fail to produce the goods.
The first new move is to win the toss and field. We will chase the game for a change. The side is not a huge surprise;
Trescothick, Abell, Myburgh, Cooper, Hildreth, Allenby, Trego, Overton, Barrow, Thomas, Overton
The county have decided to rest Lewis Gregory so the twins play together. Tim Groenewald, as predicted, is going to find getting a berth in this side when all the young guys are fit very difficult and he doesn't this time. No spin option is included, except for Myburgh at a push. Abdur really hasn't justified his inclusion with the bat or the ball and may have to wiat to make an impression for the warmer weather of June July and August.
The other question, which has yet to be answered, or even probably put forward, is where should Marcus bat? He will open in this game with Tom probably but how long can that go on if he loses his wicket at some point in the first 10 overs for very little? Is it coming to the time when a discussion has to be had about how much his desire to open until he retires creates a problem for his side. If he cannot stand at 1 or 2 is the alternative forcing him into retirement by dropping him if he will not move down the order? Many have said that Marcus will know when it is time for him to go. I hope BEFORE that time arrives he'll know when it is time for him to CHANGE and move into the body of the side to bolster up the middle order and get back to producing those devastating spells of strong confident hitting that a unit short on cofidence wants from a battling captain. Is it time for him to take the Collingwood route? Alternatively he can just prove us all wrong by getting big scores in this game and the Durham game and hitting himself back into opener contention. The further question is... if we do decide to move Trescothick down the order, who takes his place at 1 or 2?
Anyway that is for another game. Today we have put Yorkshire in and we've got rid of Lees and Rhodes with less than 80 on the board on the first morning. Lees went at 55 to Pete Trego and then Rhodes was disposed of by Jamie Overton who is hopefully coming back to dangerous contention for a regular place at regular (or more than regular) pace.
Will it be a case of leave it to the bowlers again? Jim Allenby found some form in the Sussex 20 on Friday and also seems to have found his place in the side finally. We need Tom Cooper to now start to find some form in that middle order work room. But first we need ABell, Myburgh and Banger to get the front end doing more than wandering back to the pavilion dejectedly before we pass 50. 10 wickets from now we'll see where we are I suppose.

If the automatic shut off occurs then we all knackered until I get access again I am afraid.... I've been waiting 2 weeks now!!
Normal service will be resumed then. Until then you'll have to occupy yourselves in other ways I am afraid boys and girls.
Sorry

Cloudy (it is high cloud), dry with a slight breeze, temperature 12.4c at 8.23am.
If the pitch is a bit green first up which we tend to do the toss is HUGE!
Given our fragility with the bat and their attack I fear for us hugely if we get put in today.
I think Abdur has to play, we know 2nd innings we are likely to have lots of overs to bowl even if we roll them over today. It worked last week but no real future in playing no serious spinner for me.
I'd be up for "resting" Cooper today but can't see it will happen as batting looks so thin with only the 5 batters plus an out of form Alex.
He is 3rd in our batting averages, granted only with 29 but Abell is 12.50, Cooper 16.7, Allenby 19.2, Trego 24.6, Barrow 15.7.
All of our batters have underperformed thus far except Hildy.
By all accounts Tres captained superbly up at Notts, and if you have seen 2 of the catches he took at slip up there they were worth a few runs themselves.
In 23 years last match was only his 2nd ever pair, against Vernon on a bowlers pitch openers are going to get good balls.
I welcome the praise on here for his next big score, who on the sidelines is more likely to do so???
0, 1, 5, 15, they are all failures?
When there are 6 batters in our squad all with a higher AVERAGE it becomes a talking point.
We all know we have basically nothing in reserve. Dropping any of the batsmen is not an option.
Like a few others here, I've made my views known about his captaincy for a number of years, but until someone else steps up to the plate we've just got to get on with it.
Thanks for the heads up, Grockle, would have been searching like a fool otherwise.
I am now becoming firmly of the opinion that Marcus is of use to us in position 3,4 or 5 but NOT at 1 or 2.
Everyone supporting him is perfectly correct, he is a batting asset and is still a major source of runs for us. BUT I'm sorry he is not that at number 1 or 2 unless he proves me very very wrong for the next two or three games.
His loss in the first 5 overs of a game is devastating to this side and the loss of his run making ability is an even bigger loss because he is in the wrong position in relation to his present abilities IMO.
I'm not 'bashing' him. I'd like to see him play into his 40's and score runs and win trophies with us but only as a member of the top 5 batsmen and NOT as an opener any more because I'm personally of the view that those times are behind him as they fall behind many older batsmen.
If he is going to prove me wrong he'd better get on and do it.

My fear is that if Marcus has pressure on him to move down,
he will call it a day.
Old Boy!
I hope they send him off to the seconds to get some overs under his belt.
Very glad we did not lose this toss.
Given the decision to rest Gregory, the XI selected is the side I would have picked.
With the weather forecast to improve and the likes of Bairstow and Maxwell to come (plus a generally very long batting line-up for Yorks) we could be looking at a large Yorkshire total here.
Quote:Big Jim
Spot on, Grizzz, of course he shouldn't be dropped, Philander was virtually unplayable at times, not many could have managed against him up there.
Like a few others here, I've made my views known about his captaincy for a number of years, but until someone else steps up to the plate we've just got to get on with it.
Thanks for the heads up, Grockle, would have been searching like a fool otherwise.
Unless I've been 'sleep-posting', BJ, I fear you may have mixed me up with AG, (which is new I suspect to both of us !).
I hope Marcus get's a ton, but my views very much mirror Grockle's re his batting position, and I've posted many times on his Captaincy.
Still, sounds like a reasonably balanced day so far. Let's hope we can clear up the tail quickly & then bat with grit, purpose & determination.
Grizzzly
So, what's the verdict ? Reasonably balanced at the end of day 1 ?
Appears our bowlers stuck to their task pretty well ?
Grizzzly
All our bowling looked pretty straightforward to play, with of course little in the way of variety. There were far too many fours conceded, and half way through the afternoon I reached the conclusion that this was a 400 to 450 runs pitch, which is unlikely to deteriorate much over the course of 4 days. On reflection, and knowing the history of Taunton pitches, I am unsure as to why we elected to field first.
A missed catch at slip by Trescothick off Bairstow when the skipper looked to be in discomfort with his hand for a while. However, he later redeemed himself by catching Bairstow.
A good piece of fielding on the boundary by Cooper, which brought ample applause from a good-sized crowd, but the scoreboard, tells the rest of the story.
I hope that the problems with the scoreboard have been rectified, but I did notice that the club had brought out a small manually - operated one which had been put up (presumably ready in case of emergency) in Tractor's corner.
He has for 15/20 years I believe been an opening batsmen.
I may be wrong but we only have 2 openers on the books, Tres and Abell?
Myburgh was forced up the order to do it last year?
So if Tres is moved down who opens?
I think he scored about 140 opening not a month ago?
There seems so much more scrutiny on Marcus's failures than anyone else in the team.
I get he is captain, and suffers from having been so good 3/4/5 years ago that we still compare his output now to what it was then.
I accept he isn't what he was but we only have 5 batsmen on the books seriously for the 1st team (I don't count Barrow or Trego as top 5 options and CK is out indefintely)
We have been unfortunate maybe in losing CK, Compo, Arul, Jones, Jos all within 2 years, but all were none over the winter and we haven't done enough about it to have any options to make any changes to a currently failing batting order.
Todays play I think we have really missed a trick.
In those conditions up to 4pm it was as perfect/ideal first day bowling conditions as you will ever get and we didn't make the most of them.
2 late wickets has made the score look "ok" but we really should have had them for 250/275 maximum and been batting this evening in that sun.
Now looking at a sizeable first inning score against a very very strong Yorkies bowling line up. Tomorrow will be a real test of our batting abilities.
oh wait.........he was out when he was !!! Just posting for you !!!
Not many today due to the camera being packed away early, and when it was drizzling with rain.
What a good innings from Jack Leaning today, this is 4 of his runs.
Andrew Gale can only look and watch Jim Allenby catch the ball off the bowling of Peter Trego.
Tim Bresnan can always be a dangerous player and hard to get out, he made a useful 54 not out, 4 runs to his name with this shot.
Jamie Overton got an official warning for bowling above waist high full toss to Jack Leaning.
Even though I packed my camera away I am glad I stayed late an watched the clutter of wickets at the end of the day.
Of the total runs scored from the bat, some 61 % came from boundaries.
That speaks for itself.
But the trouble is that it needs to be seen through the prism of our own struggling batting line-up I e it looks like a lot of runs for our lot to get vs Brooks, Bresnan and Plunkett.

It has always been the case that opening batsmen (whoever they are) are more likely to be dismissed for less than 10 than middle order batsmen- but- if they survive they are more likely to compensate with a big hundred.
How often do you hear commentators say 'If England/Somerset/whoever can get through the first hour, there are lots of runs in this pitch.
With Tendulkar the sign he was past his best was that he 'only' made 50's instead of 100's, but it was an undeniable decline. With Trescothick it would appear to be more complete failures, but he still has the ability to make 100 when it is his day.
I don't think any of us have got remotely close to playing first class cricket, but presumably there are certain things you never forget- so if it's a good wicket, and the bowling slightly less testing, you can still make that 100, it's just that 100 maybe one match in 6 (which would equal 3 a year, which is quite acceptable) BUT you would be missing all the handy 30, 40's and 50's which you would normally expect to go with the 100's, and scores less than 10. So- it's not he can't make 100- it's that he is failing far more often to get past the first hour at the crease.
I remember Peter Parfitt made a comment that he retired when he got out to an ordinary bowler who in the past would not have caused him a problem. But, this person who ordinarily wouldn't have caused him a problem was to quick for him- and that was it for him- because he knew people who in the past wouldn't have caused him a problem now could. Only Trescothick knows if that is true in his case.
The main discussion was based around the suggestion that if Marcus moved to a position where the ball was less likely to deviate to the same extent and the bowler was less likely to be throwing it at him at the same speed he would compensate for slight changes in his own reactions and produce the innings we all know he is still capable of.
No one has questioned his ability once set to make a score. The hundred this season has shown he is capable of that still HOWEVER the other innings he has played have put some weight behind the premis that he is less likely to get set opening the innings.
The man himself has made it pretty clear that he is very loathed to move from the opening position. If that is the case and if this was anyone else but Banger the selectors would quite rightly be looking at other opening options and he has to accept that as part of the life of a cricketer.
I think he should move, I think I saw enough evidence last year to suggest his batting reactions are not what they were (his fielding reactions show that he is still extremely capable of contributing to a side) as an opener and this compounds his lack of foot movement. I do believe that in the early middle order this would not be a problem and Marcus has more to give. But if he won't move and does not score he has to make way for someone else because we cannot continue to start innings with effectively 10 men and the hope it will be his 'day' today. That is not what an opener is for.
I'm very happy to be proved wrong and MT to go through the rest of the season batting into the second and third hour of a game with aplomb..... just don't see it happening personally except on those Trescothick 'days' which aren't seeming to come that often any more.

There's an absolutely foolproof way to solve this. The skipper needs to score some consistent opening runs. Then this can all go away.

Even if conditions are better for batting today, it will still be a big test for our guys.
Incidentally, Oz media is reporting that Trevor Bayliss will get the England gig which would be a huge boost to Yorkshire morale.
It can't be that he has a niggle because he did play on Friday , albeit in a short game. In the present circumstance it does seem particularly strange or am I being too wise in retrospect ? Surely if he needed a rest you'd give him a complete one .
Maybe the aim for this one was to produce a total flat track and hope for a high-scoring draw?
The club have talked, for years, of wanting to be able to rotate bowlers but have never really had enough bodies to achieve it. Perhaps we do now have enough bodies to be able to do it? Perhaps they consider Gregory's presence more vital on 'result,' type tracks? Or against teams that we have a better chance of beating?
Some people...
It may be that they plan to rotate Alf in and out quite a lot too.

Still a long, long way to go but hopefully we can garner a number of batting bonus points from this dig and get a number of batsman to the point where they have more form and confidence to take up to the NE for what might be a 'sporting,' track.
Grizzzly
If we do accomplish that them the draw will then be a strong favourite as a result.

Tom C was very u certain against Plunkett from around the wicket and digging it in. He got through it and began to look confident.
Don't think the track died yet. Good batting conditions certainly but some balls caused problems for most batters.
Poor 75 mins with the ball first up but after that a superb day.
Even I had big fears of our line up versus their attack but we batted very very well I thought.
Trescothick was excellent, looked in complete control and got to 50 with ease before nicking behind.
Tom A too looked very secure, solid, some nice shots and positive when allowed.
Ditto Myburgh, very solid and nice and attacking when given the opportunity.
Hildreth, an absolute pleasure to watch. He is in the form if his life and is just so destructive currently. 50 off 31 and 82 off 61 and not a slog in sight, all beautiful cricket shots. Shame his over confidence gave that caught and bowled as he looked in no trouble at all.
Cooper, very very scratchy to begin with but at least he fought it out, took plenty of blows from Plunketts short barrage but grew in confidence the longer he stayed there.
For info Hildy is now on 915 first class season runs at an average of 65.3, not too shabby that. Be great if he gets the chance to go for his 1000 by end of May in a winning cause of course!
A good day's cricket on a batters friendly pitch, everybody should make some runs on this pitch.
You have to put a lot of effort into your bowling to get a result, Alfonso Thomas tried to unsettle Tim Bresnan with a short ball.
Tim Bresnan batted well to get to his 100 runs not out.
Steve Patterson looks like he must have gloved this short ball from Peter Trego to Alex Barrow.
Marcus Trescothick punished any ball not bowled at the stumps, this short for 4 runs always looks good when Marcus plays it.
I don't like seeing Marcus get out playing this type of shot when he played such a good innings up to then. The bowler was Steve Patterson the catcher was Jonathan Bairstow.
A good steady innings from Tom Abell to reach 62, this shot was for 4 runs.
Johann Myburgh is our lowest scorer so far and he scored 41, this shot added four runs to his score.
What can you say about James Hildreth this year he keeps scoring runs, it was a surprise when he got out c&b Rashid after scoring sixes like this.
What a good crowd today, the members came to support both clubs.

This could have been one of the biggest crowds for a CC match I have seen, during the lunch break when people wandered out to the middle the outfield looked very crowded.
I am still looking for the summer to arrive, after the tea break it got very cold, back to the warmer coat today.

Now.. do we think there's much chance of Yorkshire being willing to set up some sort of last day run-chase?
Do we think that would be desirable from our point of view, with what had been a largely out of form batting line-up?
If the answer to the above two questions is "yes," then do we think we should declare as soon as we get to 400 (if we get there)?
We are not obligated, IMO, to bat out the 110 overs just to give Yorkshire a chance at their full bowling bonus points because we could very easily make the case that we were declaring slightly in arrears to try to set up some sort of game.
Of course, it's also possible that a declaration at 400 might serve only to allow Yorkshire to shut the door on us, by running up a large score pretty quickly and then declaring to leave an equation in which only they can win.
As you say, if we have several wickets in hand as and when we reach 400 then it would be tempting to bat on and try and get some sort of big lead so as to then attempt to put them under some sort of pressure.
Have to hope we can bowl tightly enough to stop Yorkshire racing into a big lead this afternoon.
I hope that SCCC are going to largely keep this team set-up (with the extra batsman allowing Cooper to bat five and Allenby six) as often as possible.
I did think, during the recent T20 match, that it would have made sense to push Jove up the order, once the asking rate had begun to get high. 50 in 19 balls would have been very handy in that match.
I guess a draw has to be odds on from here.
Grizzzly
Have to say it looks like it's been a very professional and disciplined display with the ball this afternoon.
Seems like a good old game up to now.

Tree used a fine short mid on and two short mid wickets to very good effect!!!
Disciplined bowling and a risky number of wickets lost meant the scoring rate crawled along.
A very good day from the lads!

Track is apparently quite dry, helping some reverse swing. May give some assistance to Rashid too.
Can't rule anything out for tomorrow now.

I agree with AG that after their exhilarating batting performance before lunch, the adrenalin must have been bubbling over in the Overton twins, and I would certainly have opened the second innngs bowling with them in tandem, rather than Alfonso and Pete.
I remember when, in a Ashes First Test back in the `90s, Andy Caddick had for once starred with the bat and hit a rapid 50-plus at No 10, taking England to a semi respectable score.
But instead of being given the new ball while on a high, it was handed to Darren Gough. He was hit for 14 in the first over by Michael Slater and the whole tone for Australia`s Ashes win had been set.
Somerset's day, they have made Yorkshire dig their heels in to play out some of the remaining time.
Alfonso Thomas bowled by Liam Plunkett, the ball just clipping the off stump.
Nice to see Tommy Cooper score some runs with quite a few fours like this four.
Steve Patterson the pick of the Yorkshire bowlers, seen here bowling Jim Allenby.
He also bowled Peter Trego, a few more runs from Peter Trego wouldn't do any harm.
Alex Barrow is also short of runs, he was caught down the leg side by Jonathan Bairstow off the bowling of Steve Patterson.
A lot of entertainment at the end of the Somerset's innings with both of the Overton batting together, this was a very flat six by Jamie.
Alex Lees wasn't very happy about being given out, first the scorer gave him out lbw Peter Trego and then he was caught Alex Barrow bowled Peter Trego.
I think I will name this catch of the day by Jim Allenby to dismiss Will Rhodes bowled by Johann Myburgh.
And this catch by Marcus Trescothick a close second to dismiss Andrew Gale off the bowling of Craig Overton
This time Craig Overton did have somebody able to reach his hands to celebrate Gale's wicket his brother Jamie.
Another wicket for Craig Overton, Glen Maxwell.
I am told you don't see fielding positions like this very often, this was because all the bowlers were bowling at the stumps and not giving anything away, this was for Peter Trego.
Can you name the fielding positions?
That does look an extremely unusual field indeed. I assume Pete was bowling either off-cutters or big in-swingers? And presumably there were very few slips - maybe just one?
Looks like a silly mid-on and then two straight short mid-wickets. That's assuming an RHB. Who on earth was that field set for?
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2015:05:26:20:57:13 by AGod.
Win, draw or even lose this game has been a great team effort. Best I have seen for ages. Brand new hope. Very, well done.
So pleased for Cooper, you could see there was a player there in first friendlies but just been horribly out of touch until now.
Jamie+Craig, what can I say, talent coming out of their ears, they are so strong, hit it so cleanly and do it all with a smile on their face. 18 ball 50, absolute carnage. 75 off 5.5 overs, not even sure Gayle will top that on Friday!
Bowling we were superb. We are rarely going to blitz teams out with our attack at home but funky fields, very accurate bowling and great fielding. Top energy too, lots of noise, dives, gee-ing up, if we'd have just got 1 more in that last hour it would have topped the day off.
Still a lot of work to do but really big chance tomorrow.
If we can get them out by lunch it will be something like 260 off 65 to chase in 2 sessions. I think this is the par mark. Get them out earlier and we have a great chance, any longer and the draw or a nervy batting out the day becomes the favourite outcome.
GAME ON!!!

Some day's you get lots of photo opportunity unlike the first day, I knew before I got home I would have plenty to pick from.
One Last Over Slip and 2 Last Over Gullies.
Personally, I think most within the club would probably be content (deep down) with a draw from a fixture that, on paper, looked pretty difficult. And doubly so as it would be a maximum points draw from our stand-point.
LoL
Seventy-eight Seasons a Somerset Supporter
That seemed a rather low cut-off point to me but, if it is realistic, then we are rapidly running out of real estate.
The bigger question for Jamie is really one of whether and when he's going to start being a regular wicket-taker.
Let Myburgh and Cooper bowl out the day and save our pacemen for the trip to CLS, IMO.
Pointless cricket since lunch really and never going to be a result even before that. They ( the powers that be both locally and nationally ) really need to ensure that the bowlers get a fair crack of the whip - what will we end up with here - nearly 1500 runs scored for the loss of 30 wickets - no wonder so many counties have poor gates and financial problems.
I don't claim to have all the answers but a day like today is not ( IMO ) worth paying good money for and you cannot blame the players on either team for that !
At least we were trying something different - I would still like to have had Dockrell in the side (because Leach is injured) probably (I regret) at the expense of Alfonso.
It is very encouraging to have the youngsters doing so well.
Old Boy!
and I edit this posting to say that had he done so he would have had nothing to lose, whereas he has actually lost his own wicket in the pursuit of absolutely nothing.

Might it be worth considering some sort of spectator-friendly rule, along the lines that the batting side can't keep going beyond 300 ahead or 55 overs remaining ? I know saving a game is perfectly legitimate and I've no problem with that, and my suggestion would need refining, but it must be worth investigating.
Anyway, the lads gave done their best in this game, and not lost to the champions, so onwards and upwards 😊

Again, I agree with Rodders12 in that pitches like this are simply not conducive to being good for the game.
Yes, it is good to see one's last wicket pair put on a good stand, but not quite so in perspective when every other side can do the same.
Our fielding this afternoon looked ragged and lethargic at times, with a few dropped catches and some misfields. I suspect that the players envisaged that the game would peter out into a dull draw, as did the majority of spectators I do believe.
There was no way that Yorkshire were going to increase the tempo and set us a target, which would give a chance of winning to both sides, in view of the colds that they have caught here within the last few years.
As regards SP's suggestion, there was a limit put on a side's first innings in County Championship games. It was experimental for a couple of years, and I believe that the limit was 100 overs per side. CC games were of 3 - day duration in those days of course.
It is a difficult one, but I do not attach any blame to the ground staff at Taunton who year in, year out do a cracking job.
IMO it was a shame that we never played a recognised spin bowler in this game. There was far to much of a muchness about our attack.
If we carry on like this, there will be little chance of any home advantage for Somerset this season.
Good weather and some good company. A shame that the cricket was so attritional.
Seems like we were spoiled by the Test on Monday, and it was unlikely to be very exiting today anyway. Now for some hit and giggle...
However, at one point Myburgh had three for not many. Good for JM.
Obviously, Rehman had done nada before today. But if the club retains faith in him, then they should expect him to take more wickets than JM would. Which brings us back, I'm afraid, to the nonsense of the T20 registrations and the consequent non availability of an overseas player, of whom it was said ( at the time that he was signed) 'He will be available for the whole season.'
Management had better hope that we at least qualify for the next stages of T20.... Otherwise this registration business will look even more unfortunate.
One imagines that CLS will be tough. Hopefully several batsmen will have gained in confidence after this match. But will that be enough to enable the, to prosper if the ball swings and seams around?
Lewis Gregory will surely return. But in place of whom? Jamie Overton or Alf?

We're now 12 points clear of the drop zone, so a bit of a cushion, albeit we are 17 points behind the fifth placed side (Warks).

Collingwood's preferred tactic at CLS ( and in general) has been to bowl first if he wins the toss-theory being that the pitches flatten out during the game so the 4th innings is often the best time to bat. Durham's batting has been inconsistent to say the least and we were set targets of around 250 by both Sussex and Notts. I was fearing the worst on both occasions but we ended up winning easily. Mark Wood came in as nightwatchman at 6-1 in the second innings against Notts and wasn't dismissed until the after lunch on the following day and there were no alarms in either of the run chases.
Even in the first two innings of the CLS matches batting becomes easier after around 40 overs-lower order partnerships have been common occurrences in the last couple of seasons.
The only thing I could see different to day was the fielding it was not has good today, I also don't like seeing leg side field placing for leg side bowling.
Tim Bresnan, down the leg side with no chance of stopping the ball by the wicket keeper.
This time Tim Bresnan did miss the ball and was out lbw Johann Myburgh
I can't remember if Liam Plunkett was missed by Marcus but somebody more agile should be fielding in that position.
It is always harder for the wicket Keeper to take balls down the leg side, four runs to Liam Plunkett.
The table looks a little better after the draw.

Some good stuff has come out of this game, (especially the 'O's), so let's hope we can build on that.
Encouraging to hear that the fielding positions were a little unorthodox as well, (whoever's idea they were !).

Quite right, Ggg. The de-registration of Rehman implies that T20 is the club's chief objective and so management must achieve T20 success to justify this stance, given that the members would surely prioritise the CC.
You can't criticize the spinner in every other post and then demand to know why he has been de-regulated in just one AG.
His de-regulation implies nothing of the sort about the T20. His ineffectiveness at Taunton which you have banged on about almost constantly suggests that of the three international players we presently need for our competitions he was the one who would have the least impact on performance and so he was de-regulated. Just because that links to the T20 in no way suggests that this is the county's chief objective for the season.
I'm sure, had Abdur been taking bucketloads at Taunton they would have de-regulated Tanvir
Jack Leach's injury was unfortunate but there's a bloke called Waller who could also have been considered and on your assessment of Rehman up to now possibly might have been a better bet on this pitch.
The lack of another spinner did not lose us the game. A ton by Bresnan at the end of a Yorkshire innings and general Yorkie stubbornness on a less than demanding pitch might have done. Decisions about which seamers to use when and how may also have had a say.
The presence or lack of presence of Mr Rehman at the moment seems to be the main point of your analytical existence but seems to have little positive effect on what is happening on the pitch for Somerset. Let's all hope that changes...
That is, of course, if Somerset 'keep faith' with him. Anyone got an alternative international we can buy in when we cancel his contract for 2015? Maybe there's someone on loan available?

And, yeah, Rehman had not been effective in the two previous home games. But this seems to have been quite a dry surface. Dry enough - as per Craig O - to promote reverse swing and to help JM - at one point - to have picked up 3 for 30 odd.
Perhaps, with hindsight, Tres might wish that he had selected GD for this one.
We need to hope that it's a seaming type track up at CLS rather than the sort of flat track that we've found up there a couple of times in the not too distant past, notably in 2010 when a draw there combined with a spineless Lancs performance cost us so dear.
They may very well have got their registration paperwork in a tizzy (it wouldn't be the first time) and they may not have finished yet as Anderson may be a poor option given his present position in the NZ setup and his back injury.
But to jump from there to "T20 the county's chief objective for 2015" is a leap of faith.
Having said that, if their main objective was to win the CC1 they may have to re-organize their priorities anyway because that looks highly doubtful from here.

He's fast becoming a Richard snell /mendis type signing. Q the famous back injury!!!

Having said that, they did make some play, at the time of his signing, that one of Rehman's great virtues was that "he would be available for the whole season."
But I suppose that was before they'd signed Tanvir or, indeed, any of their other T20 recruitment.
Re: Anderson, Grockle, I think by the time that he is meant to turn up for us, Gayle and Tanvir are both meant to have left for the West Indian T20 tournament. So, in theory, Rehman and Anderson should be the only two people that could be registered at that point. However, I suppose it's still possible that the 21 day period that players need to be registered for could still create a problem, even then.
In Mendis' case the 'back injury' was code for 'we're not picking him because everyone knows what the mystery spinner is bowling and are getting their big spoons out'. Saved face when he went home really. A little like Mushy's 'knee problem' at the end of his time with us.
Tanvir always seemed a 'B celebrity' signing and had the other two been available sooner and for longer he may not have appeared in Somerset colours. Having said that he seems to have done really well in the first T20 and let's hope he'll keep that up.
Whether they would have played those two or not is only an issue if Rehman had shown something against the early Championship sides.
Maybe the management was of the same opinion as AG seems to have been and they only took Abdur for the first games in the CC1 on the gamble the conditions would give him something. Maybe they always looked on him as important in the second half of the Championship. In which case his 21 day de-regulation wasn't an issue unless conditions favoured him (which they haven't) and they had 3 other spinners anyway.
Still in no way suggests that Somerset have a main aim of winning the T20 at the expense of the other competitions.

I personally don't care which internationals are registered or are not and am happy for Rehman to sit on the bench while he offers nothing - it allows space for others to show their value - I'd even give Max a go... we keep signing the man up for another season. George certainly needs to re-assert himself in Somerset colours.

Rehman the signing brought to turn draws into victories . Had his chance v middx and turned victory into a defeat. Had a chance v yorks and he wasn't even available. Management are struggling here is the way I see it . I also Matt s Twitter comment "I feel we are getting there". Err why were we not there from the start? Other teams appear to have been!!
Still, let's hope that the cobwebs are now fully blown away and that we can get a win up at CLS. I think we've only one there once in CC1 in the past?
It does amaze most of us how much preparation we seem to do and then rumble out of the shed and get into our 'stride' about middle of May!

In the event that "control," job, thus far, has arguably been done by Jim Allenby. JA seems to me to have been our most economical bowler most of the time so far this season. Unfortunately, he too finds it hard to take wickets at Taunton (or has done so far). But even if not taking wickets, a bowler that is only going for about 2 runs per over has an obvious value.
