Metro 50 Game 6 - "Young Guns" at Sussex

By Grockle
August 21 2025

Off to the SOuth coast in the sun for an important game against the Sharks for a place in the finals section of the Metro 50.  The loss against Warwickshire on Sunday has made every game now a vital one and the fact we are at home until the last game on Tuesday does not work in our favour (though we have a better away record having said that.  Ben Green is being rested from the squad for today's game and it looks like we have gone with a 'Young Guns' approach to this match.  Sussex have won the toss and put us in first.

Metro 50 Game 6 v Sussex at Hove Thursday 21 August 2025

Ben Green is being rested for this one and we have also gone without the specialist spin of Jack Leach in a side that reads as;

Vaughan, Lammonby, Goldsworthy, Rew J (c and wk), Rew T, Thomas, Hill, Roberts, Aldridge, Langridge, Ogborne

Very definite 'Young Guns' side this as we have included all the guys coming into this squad for this competition and a bowling attack that does not include Ball, Davey, Green or Leach with only Kasey offering anything like a level of season experience.  Good signs for the future that we are willing to go with this side.  We shall see whether that confidence comes to fruition on the pitch today.  We will not be facing Josh Thomas' brother George because he has picked up an injury before this game.

Sussex have won the toss and will bowl first and we start on time. Archie and Tom come out to face the first over from Hunt who strangles Archie down the leg side first ball and he is out off ball 1 so it's 0 for 1 and not the start we wanted.

Goldsworthy comes in for the second ball of the day and that ball is also down the legside but is wided.  Then we almost get involved in a silly run out from the third it ball.  Exciting over so far!!  Lewis does not look much better with the next which is under edged as the Somerset pair try to get their approach stabalised in the first 6 balls.  The first over ends with the loss of Vaughan and 2 runs on the board.

It doesn't get better in the Hudson-Prentiss starter from the other end as Goldsworthy edges a chance that does carry to Clarke in the slips but it is not held and we survive to move to 6 for 1 after 2 with 5 to Lewis and Tom L yet to get off the mark.  Hunt makes sure that Lammers does not get off the mark as he edges the second ball of the third to Clarek at second slip to be caught for a zero.  6 for 2 as James Rew walks out after 15 balls with a significant rebuilding job to do.

Goldsworthy then mistimes a shot from Hudson-Prentiss and simply loops a top edge to Crocombe (very Somerset name) at square leg and goes for 8 from 16 balls.  The 6th over ends at 21 for 3 as the Rews come together very early in this game.  It does not look good for the visiting side today unfortunately.

This Somerset side has an average age of 20.9 years (230 years between them and 4 still teenagers) with the youngest being Thomas at 17 and the oldest being Kasey and Tom tying at 25.  This is going to be a stern test for them coming back from this. A tentative move towards the 10th over with only 28 runs on the board in 9 overs with Thomas on 3 and James on 14 - a run rate of 3.11 presently.  Hunt has bowled 5 overs 2 for 19 - an excellent opening spell.

As the 'Powerplay' ends with another excellent 5 over spell from Hudson-Prentiss (1 for 14) Somerset have moved to 33 for 3 after 10.  The first change sees Clark coming on to bowl the 11th from the Cromwell Road end.  Hudson-Prentiss will continue at the other end.  The 50 arrives in this over with a 4 from James at the end of it.  It went for a few - 13 so things are looking up a little.

On comes Crocombe for the 14th with the quickest seam record for Sussex looking to hold the Rews who start this one at 53 for 3.  They go into the 15th without James Rew who mistimes the last ball of Crocombe's first and is caught and bowled for 29 for 34 at 59 for 4.  Josh Thomas  will face the first of the 15th from Clark.  It's not getting better people!!

This is a big innings for Thomas who has up to now has been asked to come in to the back part of the middle of an innings and look to close it down.  Here he is being asked to make the innings worthwhile from a much earlier time in it and needs to make long term runs if this is to be a significant score of any kind.

Crocombe strikes again in the 20th over as he bowls Thomas Rew for 30 off 46 at 82 for 5.  It looked like an inside edge but the replay says Rew got nothing on it at all - a good ball by the Sussex man.  In comes Fin Hill, another man who has a BIG job today of making something in the middle of this innings to give the bowlers something to bowl at.  At the end of the 20th Somerset have 82 for 5 with Hill yet to score and Thomas has 12 from 17 as he faces the ex-Somerset 50 over man Danny Lamb - who he probably played with in 2023.

The 100 arrives in the 24th bowled by Crocombe with a lovely driven four from Josh to take himself to 27 and Somerset to 101 for 5. As we move to the halfway position, it is pretty clear that anything over 200 from a full quota of overs would be happily welcomed by the visitors.  The chances of us batting for 50 overs and getting anything competitive is very much on the two in the middle now.  Commentators are saying that a par score at Hove is above 250 and we are a LOOONNNGGG way from that.

At 25 we have reached 114 for 5 with Hill with 6 from 10 and Thomas with a very good 38 from 39 with some really classy, confident shots.

The 28th over at 132 for 5 brings up an excellent 50 partnership from 51 balls with Hill 17 and Thomas 31.  Something the side needed from these two and they have delivered so far.  Lenham and his spin is introduced in the 29th where Josh goes to 50 from 54 balls with a six square on the legside added to his excellent 7 fours at 141 for 5.  An excellent knock from a promising player.

At the 'double your score' level of overs (30) we have reached that 141 but we will have to do the rest of it without Thomas who is fooled by a little bit of movement from Hunt caught behind by Simpson.  A good solidifying innings by Josh but we still have a hell of a job to do as Kian Roberts arrives.  We'd sell our souls for doubling this to 282 but that is HIGHLY unlikely I would say.  Hunt 8 overs - 3 for 32.

The 150 arrives at the end of the 33rd over from Lenham with a single from Hill. Hunt bowls out in the 34th with excellent figures of 3 for 35 from his 10.  152 for 6 as we move into the 35th from the continuing Lenham.  Roberts puts the first one into the tents for six and the young spinner gets some tap as Somerset move to 168 for 6 at the end of the over with 3 boundaries from the Somerset men.

With 15 overs to go and a new bowler in Carson taking the ball, the job of these two is to try and stay until the end of the game and see where the score takes Somerset.  Carson goes for 4 from his first as Lamb is returned for the 37th.  He's gone for 5 for 31 in his first spell and his tight bowling helps to slow the scoring as we move into the 39th and then the last 10 over stage.

Carson is holding up the other end and we are at 188 for 6 with another solid 48 run partnership between Roberts and Hill.  That becomes 50 with a boundary off the first ball of the 40th from Hill but Roberts is proving good support for his more established partner.  With 10 overs to go these two have taken us to 3 runs from 200.  Not a score we were expecting at the halfway stage.

The 200 arrives with a single from Lamb in the 41st off the bat of Hill.  The first target they obviously had.  Now it is accumulating and keeping going for the next 9 or so overs. 201 for 6 with 9 to go.

Fin Hill faces Carson on 48 at the start of the 42nd and he manages a double from the middle of the over to take him to an exccellent 50 from 62 with 3 fours and a six.  A very important effort and he then moves to 51 to become the highest scoring player in this innings.  The 42nd ends at 207 for 6.

Lamb is still bowling tightly as he starts his 9th with only 39 down. He gets a wicket as Carter catches Roberts going down the ground to long on and going for 29 from 32.  He had to go at some point and though it maybe early, he had to take a chance.  Good partnership work from Kian to produce the highest partnership of the match.  208 for 7 as Aldridge comes in (a little late) so there is still hope of something close to 250?

Carson continues into the 44th at 0 for 27.  But Aldridge reverses him for six off his second ball of his 5th but he comes back to take out Hill bowled for 55 off 67 balls trying to reverse it going skittled around his legs. Another excellent innings ends at 218 for 8 as Ogborne arrives.  44 overs and 218 for 8 with the job now to be? Bat out the 36 balls!!

Lamb bowls out with the 45th.  He takes the pace off really well and we know he's a decent play2 in an important overer in this format as he was for us.  Kasey takes him for a boundary in his last over but the experience pro keeps his total under 50 at 10 overs 1 for 48 - he's done the job his county asked him to do.  225 for 8 with 5 to go.

30 balls remain, Crocombe returns with 2 for 37 from his previous 6 and he bowls well tying Alfie down at one end trying to get his eye in.  He only goes for 3 off an important over and with 24 balls to go we are 22 from 250.

Hudson-Prentiss comes back into the attack with 4 overs left, so he will probably bowl two of the ones left.  Sussex have only used 9 opvers of spin so the end will be seam - as it usually is in these games.  The home side have done well keeping the boundaries down in the last few overs when Somerset need them.  However, Alfie gets the long handle out and hits a one bounce four in the middle of the over.  He tries again to the last ball but he doesn't get enough and is caight by Carson at long off.  236 for 9 Ogborne goes for 12 from 14 as JT Langridge walks out as the last man with 3 overs left.

The first ball of the 48th from Crocombe is improvised as a kind of reverse pull into the boards as Aldridge goes to 17.  Crocombe seems to have lost it a bit as he delivers 3 wides but he gets it back on line and Kasey  tries to reverse ramp it again and is bowled for 17 from 13 with Langridge not out for 0 and Somerset all out for 243 - would we have taken that at 80 odd for 4?  Probably though they popssible lost out on getting it over 250 - though not by muich probably.

Sussex need 244 - the assessment is that the score is under par value and they will probably get it unless our bowling unit works really hard and does really well.

The Reply

Alfie is first up for Somerset against Tear and Haines and they finish with 7 from the first.  Ogborne is getting a bit of movement  but nothing in his first of any note.  Langridge starts with the second and he strikes straight away with a very speedy one that has Haines squared up and the edge flies to Kasey at first slip.  He holds on and it's 7 for 1 after 7.  The new man in is Tom Clark and Somerset add a slip to make it a 3 man ring.  JT completes his first with 2 runs and a wicket as Sussex moves to 9 for 1

Alfie flies in and puts some effort in, it might be too much as he indicates to the Somerset physio at the end of the third at 13 for 1 making motions that suggest he's got some kind of niggle in his back.  Meanwhile JT  continues with the 4th. After it the home side is 18 for 1 and Alfie does walk up to take the ball for the 5th.  He is feeling his leg and does not look fully comfortable here.  He seems to have pain in his right leg which seems to be something to do with the back around his right hip.  The question is whether he bowls through it (he's taken some medication) and possibly messes himself up for the rest of the tournament or it is a minor problem.  Nevertheless he bowls a maiden so you really can't fault his effort either way.

Ogborne is definitely struggling here as he bowls the 7th.  He's stretching after nearly every delivery and limping back to his mark.  At 33 for 1 Alfie leaves the field in some trouble and Jack Leach comes on to do 12th man duties.  That may have put this game to bed because it curtails Rew's option in trying to hold this game in check.

Meanwhile, Langridge continues with his 4th and finishes at 38 for 1.  Tom Lammonby replaces Ogborne a little earlier than expected one imagines by taking the 9th and Clark produces consecutive boundaries from his first 2 deliveries.  He had a big hundred a couple of games ago and will be confident in this competition.  Not what we want presently.  The end of his over moves the score to 47 for 1.

It is a double change as Kasey starts his bowling work with the 10th and they pass 50 with a four from his third ball to move Sussex to 53 and Clark on to 27 from 30.  He is producing some really good shots and this start is ominous.  The next ball goes all the way with a nonchalant clip that doesn't bounce inside the rope!!  So after 10 overs the home side is moving along at 6 an over needing nothing like that to pass our total.  60 for .

We need a breakthough and we get it when Tear drives the ball straight into the hands of Hill at extra cover and he goes for 16 from 26 at 60 for 2.  Tom starts his second with a wicket and we needed that.  In comes Finn Hudson-Prentiss and he misses a straight one and Lammers is on a hat-trick as Hudson-Prentiss is out first ball.  60 for 3.  It looked out on the replay.

Simpson, the keeper, is coming in to face the hat-trick ball, it's a ball he doesn't have to play and he doesn't..  he doesn't have to play the next either but he misses the next and is also LBW for nothing and it is 60 for 4 with Lammonby on for a triple wicket maiden.  Carter arrives at the crease with a completely different game facing him and 60 for 1 at the start becomes 60 for 4 6 balls later!!  He has a triple wicket maiden - well bowled Lammers !!

Aldridge has something to follow after going for 13 in his first but this has put the game back in the pot.  It gets better as Clark chips the second ball of the 12th to Langridge and it is 60 for 4 with two men atr the crease with 0 and his top scorer has left to a leading edge for 34 from 34.  It's all gone pear shaped for Sussex.  Danny Lamb is in with Ollie Carter and they have a different match on their hands.

The next scoring shot comes 10 balls after the last one and is a four from Lamb.  64 for 5 after 12 needing another 180 runs.  Tom certainly has his line right today, they are not finding him easy to get away.  He has 3 for 12 off his first 3 and Sussex are at 67 for 5.

Aldridge also tightens the screw as he goes for 3 in the 14th.  The run rate required is still less than 5 but they now have wicket pressure.  Somerset cannot take their foot off the neck as they must keep breaking partnerships to keep contriol of this.  Tom still has his mind on the job and his line is still hard to get away.  He produces a very tight 15th maiden - just what we need!!

Kasey continues and Lamb edges his first of the 16th to a low slip catch well caught by Archie Vaughan  70 for 6 with Lamb gone for 7 from 11.  This keeps getting better as Carter strides out with a hell of a job to do.  He is on for a wicket maiden but a slapped four from his last ball stops that happening but it is still a sharp over.  Carson goes to 4 and Carter has 3 and it is 74 for 6 as Alfie Ogborne returns after a bit of treatment probably.  He may not bowl all his allocation but having him back to give some relief is a good thing.  He bowls an excellent maiden, which is again what his side needs.

Aldridge continues and keeps the pressure on until the 5th ball which is whipped for four by Carson but he is straight back with a yorker to hold the bats in check.  80 for 6 after 18.  Alfie is also good to continue it seems.  84 for 6 and the RRR is rising.  James returns JT for the 20th

After 40% of the innings the situation is a little differnt than 10 overs ago.  The wickets by Lammonby and Aldridge have pout this game into a melting pot where anything can happen at 92 for 6 Sussex are still very much in this game but the loss of 6 wickets has levelled up the playing field quite a lot and the next 10 overs may very well determine where the game goes.

Kain Roberts is introduced for the 21st over and Rew is still not going to his spinners, no Vaughan, Goldsworthy or Thomas as of yet.  it may be that Somerset don't have faith in their slower men on this pitch but the home side go past 100 during the over as Roberts goes for  13 off his first giving Suiuissex some much needed breathing room.

The question with Somerset has been whether they can chioike games out if they are tight or hold a position while being choked themselves.  This game is the opportunity to show that they can do that and if Sussex get away then the answer to the question is NO.

Sussex have got the run rate back up to 5 and have threfore got the slight advantage as the RRR is less than that.  The tight control on the ball has to be maintained and the problem is where are 10 overs of that control coming from?  If Lewis or Archie are not going to be asked who does the captain turn to?  At 109 for 6 after 22, Somerset do not have 28 overs in Langridge, Aldridge, Ogborne and Lammonby.  If Roberts cannot hold the line then they have to change to spin and probably do anyway to not overtax their attack.  Their only other option is Hill if they insist on staying with spin.

Presently Carson is starting to get away a little moving to 35 from 29 at 113 for 6 but Kian's second over is better only resulting in 4 runs.  Then JT breaks through againas Thomas Rew catches Carson (35 from 34) as he tries to pull the bowler to the square boundary.  114 for 7 with Lehman joining Carter and Roberts taking us to the midpoint.

A wide spoils a good tight over from Kian followed by a driven four to move the score to 119 for 7 after 25.  Carter now needs to push his role forward to keep his county in this game.  Aldridge takes the 26th as the RRR passes the present run rate again but the margins are very small presently.  Lenhan is yet to get off the mark and Somerset want him facing as much as possible as he is nearly run out looking for a quick single.  Another wide spoils another tight over.  It's the only score in the over.

Roberts fires one in at the start of the 29th and Archie takes a superb diving catch as Carter clips him through the midwicket area but it goes to hand and it is 128 for 8 with Carter leaving for 19 from 42.  Kian Roberts worked hard for that one and it took a brilliant catch from a team mate to give him the reward.

128 for 8 halfway through the 29th as Henry Crocombe comes out to finish the over and get the inninngs back on track after Sussex have lost 7 for 68 in about 19 overs.  Roberts finishes his 5th over with 1 for 27.   At 130 for 8, Kasey bowls his 8th with 2 for 36 by his name at the start of it.  Crocombe does not seem to be going to die wondering as he drives for four but as we reach 30 overs completed Sussex need 108 more runs with only 2 wickets in the bank.

With 20 overs to go, the seam attack does have 20 overs left... just BUT Alfie is limping about the place and does not look at all comfortable though he is staying on the pitch.  Still, the skipper has not used any of his 3 slow bowlers in this innings.

For the 32nd we return to Tom Lammonby from the Cromwell and he has Crocombe with his first ball and it is pretty plumb.  The umpire had a thought and then raised the finger.  The bowling may not be a problem with this situation 137 for 9.

Hunt comes in to face Tom L on 4 for 12 in 4.2 overs needing to find another 100 runs for the win as the last man in.  Another wicket maiden from the left hander - what a great bowling performance for the 'occasional' man.

137 for 9 as the RRR moves towards 6 an over.  This has been a phenomenal bowling performance from a group not expected to be this penetrative.  Alfie Ogborne takes the 33rd and continues the tightness of the attack going for only 2 runs and pushing the RRR over 6.  Can Lammonby finish this and get a 5-fer in a game where he already has his best List A bowling stats whatever happens?  It's not going to happen in the 34th over as he goes for 5.  The score moves to 144 and the runs needed reaches a straight 100 from 96 balls so the win is still on if they don't lose another wicket!!

Ogborne takes the next to move us to 15 overs left.  Hunt has 5 and Lenham has 10.  Hunt nearly pops the ball up but it is out of the reach of Archie as he runs diving backwards.  He misses the catch but saves the boundary.  Hunt then nearly has a caught and bowled... it would have been a very good catch.  It's all happening!!  A wide brings up the 150 for Sussex and then Alfie finishes the 35th.

94 runs from 90 balls as Lammonby takes his 7th and at the end of it he gets Hunt whipping one to the boundary where Alfie takes the running catch and Tom L gets his first 5 fer 5 for 20 from 7 overs - brilliant.

Sussex were all out for 153 losing by 90 runs with 14 overs left.  That was pretty comprehensive but all down to the bowlers Lammonby with a superb 5, Langridge with 2 for 32 from 7, Aldridge  2 for 42, Roberts 1 for 28 with Alfie bowling through the pain to put in 8 overs for 30 runs.  It was all down to them to finisih it off but we need to also mention Josh Thomas with the stabalising 50 when it was needed and the largest partnership of the Somerset between Kian Roberts and Fin Hill with the latter top scoring with 55 to get us to 243 when it looked doubtful and then didn't look like enough.

The "Young Guns" came and saw and conquered today and it was really encouraging to watch.  On to Sunday with a spring in the step.  VERY WELL PLAYED BOYZ

Somerset rest Ben Green for tomorrow`s Metro Bank Cup match at Sussex, ahead of three key matches in the next five days and - hopefully - a quarter-final next Thursday. Fin Hill, Kian Roberts and James Langridge return to the squad.

Sussex, who have won three matches in a row and have the same record as Somerset, name the same squad as for last Sunday`s match at Northants: Carson, Carter, Clark, Crocombe, Foreman, Haines, Hudson-Prentice, Hunt, Ibrahim, Lamb, Lenham, Simpson (c)_ and Tear.

Sussex have the toughest games ahead, also playing Yorkshire and Warks. Middlesex have only 2 remaining. Hopefully we will end in the top 3. I don't fancy any of the sides in the other group... especially Hampshire. Firstly though there is a job to do tomorrow!

Resting one of our key experienced players when qualification is on the line. I’d argue Sussex tomorrow is our toughest remaining fixture. The communication from club on squad changes and strategy this competition has been poor.

Durham are still in the frame, beating Lancs today. Agreed this is a must win, if we're not to rely on the weather next week as well.

For an ancient person such as myself it seems slightly odd that a player called James Langridge might play AGAINST Sussex.

If we want to win this competition, leaving Ben Green out is very odd.

As have been a few selection decisions recently.

So a squad of;
Lammonby, Vaughan, Goldsworthy, Rew J (c and wk), Rew T, Thomas, Hill, Aldridge, Roberts, Ogborne, Langridge, Leach, Ball

Think the error we have made all year will happwn again as we assume Kasey Aldridge is the same as Ben Green it probably wasn't the right assumption in the red ball game and iut certainly isn't the right assumption in the white ball one.

We've lost them both next year and it will be intereteing to see which one we miss the more... if either.

The first six will remain the same. The only two questions after that are whether Jack Leach plays and then which one from Hill, Roberts or Langridge will make up the side. Hope Langridge plays either way for historical reasons but also because he is coming on in these games and is probably the quickest bowler we have in this squad.

Have to agree that not playing Ben Green in this one might be a mistake but there IS also the future to look to as well.

We clearly have a plan/method for this competition, which isn't along the lines of many members as in "pick your strongest 11 available"

Even within games we are doing things that don't align with going all out to win.

Those playing I have no doubt are trying 110% but as a club we aren't going all out to win these games.

The options we are choosing with the ball etc, we may as a club be getting what we want out of giving opportunities but we aren't going flat out for that trophy!

Nope and I've no problem with any of that... it is good to see the younger guys getting opportunities but the decision tomorrow seems to be mostly around playing the allrounder with bat and ball who is leaving and gets results in white ball cricket versus the allrounder with bat and ball who is leaving who has under performed this year and hasn't played much white stuff.

I'd play the first rather than the second and it would make no difference to which youngsters play.

Personally I'd also rest Jack and play JT with the spin in the hands of the younger guys and bring in either Hill or Roberts

But I'm sure the plan will do something different and it'll still be well worth the watch.

Agreed wsm fan. Good to see we're building the team around the players who will be here next season. Also, hopefully, knockout game(s) close together next week when we'll need Green and Davey back.

Concerns are James Rew has too much on his shoulders and doesn't have many seniors on the pitch to give him advice. Noticeable who would bowl the last over against Warks.

I’m all for blooding youngsters and have no problem with that but selections suggest they are trying to get the best of both worlds. Hard balancing act. Some bowler rotation is fine, however this is a competition we could win. Surely in professional sport we should be going flat out to win trophy? One of three competitions you can win at start of season. Winning silverware is one of the aims as a club right?

If the club communicated their plan for the Metro Bank at the start it would stop members/supporters asking all these questions. The communication on squad news for the competition has been poor in my opinion. I appreciate some things can’t be disclosed and there are complexities regarding providing updates on injuries etc but supporters have a right to know.

Travelling to Canterbury on Sunday via Braintree after watching my football team Yeovil Saturday and looking forward to the trip.

Well that was an 'interesting' 6 balls!!

Good for the club to ask the younger players questions today. Not the start they wanted and I'd have personally seen the experience coming from Ben Green rather than Kasey Aldridge but he has some 7 hours to prove me wrong in that assessment.

It'll be fun anyway

This game is on BBC Sports Extra but for how long?

The bowlers may not have an opportunity to do anything unless we get some rebuilding going presently. They'll need a total to bowl against and at 6 for 2 after 15 balls it isn't looking all that hopeful.

What is Somerset priority.

1. To win the match.
or
2. Rotate the squad ?

As members and supporters who travel to these matches I would hope the first one Mike

I think picking Green would have been a better move to do both but we have what we have and we don't have enough runs unless there is a very very good bowling performance.

JT has started us off well but Alfie may be injured?

One of the things I particularly like about this competition is the chance it gives to young players to take part in senior cricket and today our entire eleven is home grown.

Can't beat that LoL. But Lammonby has his best bowling figures! Sussex run rate taking a hammering.

Well what about that one then? The new boys did most of it but the side really stuck to the task there and where did that Lammonby spell come from? Josh Thomas was the cool head when it looked like it wasn't going to be our day with the bat.

Very impressed with the resilience of Fin Hill and Kian Roberts as well. JT Langridge is a bloody workhorse isn't he.

Still not sure why we didn't use the slow men at the end of the innings, especially as Alfie was obviously struggling - very brave to bowl 8, hope he hasn't knackered himself doing it. Good spell from Kasey as well though his batting isn't what it was earllier in the season.

That was a stonking win just when we needed it.

Very mature approach by our youngsters. Great partnership between Josh Thomas and Finn Hill when it was going against us. Golden arm Lammers!

Certainly didn’t see that coming.

Lammers will remember today for a very long time. More encouraging though is the performance of the (even) younger members of the team.

Very much liking the look of JT Langridge, Kian Roberts, Fin Hill and Josh Thomas.

Noting Kent’s performance today, it could be a tough game at Canterbury at the weekend. Hopefully we can emulate today’s terrific effort.

Pretty amazing that Tom Lammonby, at the ripe old age of 25, was the oldest player in our team today.

With five teenagers, the aggregate team age was just 234, so an average age of just 21 years old.

Was today's team the youngest ever to represent Somerset at senior level ?

It's difficult to write anything new about cricket. So, I should like to congratulate SLLL on a piece of literary innovation: I am confident that the phrase "Tom Lammonby triple wicket maiden" has never previously been written - and will never be written again.

Re: Metro 50 Game 6 - "Young Guns" at Sussex

And all I read or hear about The Hundred is that it is just a repetitive slog fest that does little to enhance the image of cricket as a beautiful game and I wonder if there is anybody on this site who cares about who will actually win the thing. And, as implied above, we can rejoice that the fifty-over competition has enabled a most promising group of young players to parade their skills. Yesterday's commentators, though essentially fairminded, frequenly mentioned that the home team was the Kent 1st XI of the future. Much the same could be said of the Somerset side, thought they didn't say it.

The loss of the BBC coverage illustrates that unless the livestream teams go out of their way to include a balance of commentators they naturally gravitate to conscious or unconscious bias.

The Kent group were very fair and good in general but accepted and identified that they naturally gravitated to a pro Kent view of things - they were talking about what they knew.

The BBC have, over the years trained their commentating teams to have a balance most of the time (something they have presently lost within their general news provision unfortunately).

I miss the double commentary teams with one from each camp and the attempt by even the most partisan commmentator to work against their own personal desire for the result.

It's not as obvious on the livestreams where people are brought in from a more limited sporting and more local resource base and sometimes don't even seem to recognise that their listening and viewing audience are a mixed bag.

There has been a debate online recently about Leicestershire who were looking for people to staff their commentary without offering anything but the opportunity and expenses to do the job.

The debate was about whether the National Minimum Wage (NMW) should be paid as a minimum, whether the offer of livestream opportunity was enough or whether somewhere in between was acceptable. It is the 'unpaid intern' debate that has been happening for many years in many areas.

I'm sure it isn't over as some counties are starting to suggest some form of organised standard livestream system for counties - centrally controlled? (God forbid). It's a very variable area at the moment and obviously counties see it as one with differing levels of importance and resource allocation.

Yesterday was an interesting comparison. The visual delivery was the minimum basic that is now acceptable - static cameras and info on the screen (though it was laughably wrong at times) but with a better than minimum level of commentary that knew what it needed to do and did it to a great extent while recognising it's own weaknesses.

I'm sure we've seen better visuals with poorer audio in this season. I certainly have. It's all in a state of flux and in front and behind the scenes I'm sure there are massively different experiences being had I'm sure.

I noted that yesterday's first over, delivered by a broad-shouldered right-handed chap with BALL on his back, was apparently bowled by a younger slimmer left hander they called Lammonby, but they corrected the error soon after the real Lammonby came on to bowl.
