Compo stars in Last of Summer Wine as he carries bat with a fine 105 not out. However, the supporting show was Shrek 2 as once again Charlie Shrek destroys Middlesex with a hatrick and 5-72
Early doors
Up with the lark to get to Lord’s for a 10.30 start. Nice sunny morning and I made it through the gates to hear we were batting first, bit of a shame the walk round the back of the Compton/Edrich stands obscures the view as I totally missed Hutton’s contribution to our score, yes a big fat zero. Not a good start to a must win game.
Slow and slower
Shah hit the first four of the day in the 5th over to take the score to 6-1and off the first 10 overs we managed a whole 15 runs. The 16th over saw a sharp chance put down in the slips off Shah, should have been 31-2. To his credit he did smash the next ball for four as well with a solid straight drive. The 50 came up in the 19th over which also saw Compton finally bring up his 1,000 runs for the cc season. The 20th over saw Shah depart when he was given LBW to Franks for 26, the umpire taking ages to raise the finger of doom. 55-2.Smith played well for his 28 and was just starting to look comfortable when I mentioned to Big Andy that it looked like he would get a big score, me and my big mouth, a good catch by Ealham off Shreck.88-3. He had just caught Compton up in the scoring stakes as well , not too hard with his strike rate at the time.
A mad 5 minutes.
Now 28 overs gone , lunch on the horizon and homing in fast was not the best time for this little session to happen, in one over we went from 90-3 to 92-6.

Peploe saw off the final ball of the over and at lunch Middlesex were 94-6. The planes circling overhead for the Heathrow landing path somehow reminded me of vultures circling the dead carcass that is our season this year. That one over from Shreck said it all to me.
Where there is hope.
100 up in the second over after lunch and with 40 overs gone we were 122-6, Compton 41, Peploe 21. In the 49 th Compton goes to his 50 off of a mere 122 balls. The 50 partnership comes up just before Peploe is caught by Hussey off the bowling of Harris for 34. 14-7.This becomes 163-8 when Louw is caught Ealham bowled Harris for 3. 174-9 Wright caught Fleming bowled Franks. Silverwood then provided Compton with the assistance he needed to get to his 100 off 174 balls with 15x4’s in278 mins.230 all out when Silverwood was caught Smith bowled Shreck for 23 including one massive 6. Compton carried his bat to 105 not out. All out inside 66 overs was pretty soul destroying though.
How to bat at Lord’s.
At 16.12hrs on day one of the match the Nottinghamshire innings commenced. Bicknell tried to do a Hutton impression but lasted an over more than him and was out LBW to Silverwood for 4.(4-1). Notts then made their way to 42-1 off 10 overs with no further alarm. Alleyne was then out for 15 caught Nash bowled Silverwood (42-2). Peploe was brought into the attack as early as the 18th over. Just after 6pm Shah missed Smith in the slips when he was 47.He went onto make his 50with 9x4’s off 89 balls in 122 minutes. Fleming was playing well and had reached 33 when the batsmen were offered the light at 18.25hrs which they took with Smith on 54.
Three hopes
Notts need 111 to equal our first innings score with 8 wickets in hand, we desperately need the bowlers to support Silverwood, (thank God he was fit to play) and we must take early wickets on day two otherwise we have “no hope , Bob Hope and envelope of winning this game.
