Comebackgatt has been submitting periodic updates to MTWD live from the Taunton ground. This feature sets out his dispatches. His mood changes as the day progresses. And what a first day of the CC for Middlesex. Read on.
Morning session
----------------
1) Yes indeed, good morning from a sunny Taunton, Ed has won his first toss as skipper and elected to bat. Steady start so far from Compo and Ben, accurate bowling from Caddick and as I write we are 9-0 in the 5th over. More updates hopefuly later.
2) We are now 61-1 in the 26th over. Pitch looks a bit slow to me and combined with perhaps early season "rustiness" from the batters it is a bit hard going. Compo looks in good order though, 30no let's hope he can go on. Caddick and Willoughby bowled well with the new ball keeping it very tight. Mt Trego has just been brought into the attack. Lunch report to follow!!
3) Well a fairly decent morning then, 64-1 at Lunch. Compo and Ace looking to really get themselves in and hopefully build a good partnership Ben played well but will be disappointed to get out when he did. As i said earlier looks a bit of a slow wicket with the ball not coming onto the bat. Trego bowled five overs, all maidens!!! Thought Caddick bowled really well first thing. I'm off to have my Lunch now, will return throughout the afternoon.
Afternoon Session

1) Well done to Compo on his fifty lets hope he can go on to three figures, Ace on the verge of his as well. Still hard going, but to be fair the bowling is tight and accurate. Even so Trego 2 runs off seven overs!! never heard of!! 125-1 at the moment although maybe a bit more by now. Slight problem sending this update. Must be careful not to spill the cider on the keyboard. Had interesting chat with a few Somerset fans over Jonno, will tell all on Away Report update on my return to the smoke on Friday. Teamtime reoprt next up.
2) Well welcome back folks before I eat my lovely vegan cheese sarnies and enjoy the sunshine, a quick update. 201-2 at tea, it was a shame Compo got out he really looked quite comfortable and he will be disappointed. Ace looks solid and Ed has already hit four boundaries so perhaps we will be looking to up the run rate after tea. The locals are good natured and a fair size crowd are here. If we could post 330+ without losing any more wickets it would day one to us I think, but long way to go yet. Now where are those sarnies and cake!!!!!!
Evening Session

1) things are going really well now picking up the rate. I feel they had to build a solid base with what still looks on paper a bit of a long tail. But they are playing with freedom now. Ace has played wonderfully and Smithy deserved his fifty including some cracking boundaries, they go after Trego after tea. I still think Caddick is the pick of the bowlers although I'm not sure his figures will show that. Close of play update to come, hopefully!!
2) Close of play report a bit late, on my way back to car I met one of our lads and had a few words . Anyway what a great day, what can you say about Ace, class just class. So sorry Smithy got run out I would have loved him to get his hundred. Really interesting first day, which our batsman laying the foundations early on, then piling on the runs after tea. My prediction at tea of 330+ was far out. All in all a really enjoyable day, lovely weather, met some nice Somerset fans had a few ciders what a way to spend a day eh? Back to the hotel now for my dinner, and back tommorrow, so look out for thread Taunton Day 2 from about 11.30 onwards.
