Sorry Reason For Being There

The Pimms Party was scheduled for the Saturday after close of play, day 3 of Sorry game. This was an event I did not expect to attend. I had been invited to a birthday celebration at a comedy club Saturday night in town. As much I was hoping to make day 3’s play the plan was straight out afterwards.

At Friday tea, during my lunch Sorry 2^nd innings was still way behind ours, but on 50-0, I still had visions of missing out on pimms party. Back at work, I was listening to Kevin Hand’s commentary when TRJ blitzed Sorry and with 5 wickets down there was talk of extra half an hour and play finishing that evening and no pimms party at all. But total collapse was abated and 6 wickets were down overnight. I wasn’t sure of start time of event, until on Middlesex Facebook announced that night it would be ½ hour an hour after match over. This now should give me plenty of time to indulge in Pimms

The Last Rites For Sorry

Not anticipating a lot of play, I made every effort of getting to Lords early. It is odd for me that I tend to make it in good time for long haul trips, but always seem to arrive late for home games. A 9:45 departure should have sufficed and of course the Jubilee Line wasn’t running, but had my Northern Line alternative. Then at Edgware I was on train waiting ten minutes it was announced Northern had closed due to an emergency, thank you, so I caught 113 bus on which I got text from Beefy Sorry lost a wicket, and I arrived 20 minutes late. In fact, especially thanks to some big hitting from Tremlett and us in position that even Middlesex really really couldn’t lose, I was quite happy for the Sorry boys to hang around as wasn’t nearly ready for party this early in the day. Kimmy said she was serving drinks at party and there were attempts at humour concerning what she was going to do with her jugs. With final wicket gone just before 12:15 a mighty Middle chant ensued and time to celebrate.

Now ready for party as I joined Beefy in Middlesex Room for pint. Needless to say we were all in a good mood. We then joined pims party on a lovely day in the Harris Garden in a very jubilant mood. Most women made an effort dress wise, while, especially in my corner we were in very casual Middlesex attire. Two of our crowd, normally teetotallers indulged in the pimms. I was volunteered as our fetcher and carrier as Kimmy was on security duty.

We enjoyed waving Sorry players off from pavilion, although no sign of R4C. The best moment was applauding Chris Adams as he passed and we audibly congratulated him. Then someone came up to me and said well bowled. His wife then came up and asked for my autograph. I dutifully signed it "Tim Murtagh". I explained how unhelpful the conditions were and how tiring the season was. Meanwhile, the same person seemed to think he recognised Beefy as part of Middlesex staff. Can’t remember how this came about but he had him for our “fitness coach". Now if you knew Beefy, you would understand how hilarious this was.

Our players, Shaggy was first, started to arrive and rousing receptions were given in form of chants to Super Ped and TRJ, especially given a certain ex Middx player they got out. As I went to toilet I was congratulated by someone else for my bowling, which I gratefully accepted and then Shaggy started calling me Murts and reminded me training was due to recommence Tuesday morning . Then late in the day the real Tim Murtagh turns up. I asked him to pretend he was me, as I was enjoying the adulation. However, the original guy who approached me said to me I’m not Tim Murtagh. I’m not aware if he still thought Beefy was fitness coach mind you.

The other highlight was an attempt of Committee member trying to get in for free. Kimmy patrolling the gate was having none of it.

The pimms seemed to finish earlier than anticipated, my apologies. We were still in party mode so party continued in Tavern with few players there as having unanticipated extra time off. Murts was drinking the same as me and more players were wondering who actually was the Murts. We watched the test with Prior closing in on century with Finn backing him up. I cursed saying I should be out there.

Then time for food and gosh the evening birthday celebration followed. We went to stand-up comedy, but the tale of me being confused for Tim Murtagh raised the biggest laugh of the day.

Meanwhile, thanks Fletch and co. for organising the pimms event. The timing really couldn’t have been any better. A lot of people complain about our social events. I disagree, whether we are doing well or badly, these are a great way of unwinding after the joys and pains of watching our team and an opportunity to meet like–minded people. Although next time, I may come clean about my identity…..then again.
