Starting Line Up For FIrst Game
Will Sam play it again?
By Barmy Kev
April 5 2011
As new season approaches this is the first pre season predictiction competion. Simply name the starting X1 and 12th man in order. There are many permutations. Read on for the rules and Barmy Kev's entry
Name the 1st X1 and 12th man for the opening game against Essex. The closest in amount of players wins. If there is a tie in amount of players , then the closest to the batting order including 12th man wins. A MTWD miniscule prize is available to the winner. If anyone gets it all spot on they will get a double miniscule prize and in the event of tie the miniscule prize will be shared.
To get the ball rolling here's my entry.

12th man: Sam Robson
The fact I had to think hard about which players I predict will or won't play is a testament to the strength of our squad. I am not sure how the position of 12th man is defined, as it could be defined as the player(s) named in the pre-match squad but who is then left out, or it could be defined as someone who enters the field at some point in the match as either a drinks carrier or sub fielder. My prediction of 12th man is based on the assumption that it will be the former definition. As for my prediction of numbers 10 and 11, well both Collymore and Hi-Fi tend to bat at 11, so I made my prediction on the basis that Collymore has a higher first-class average.

Looking at the squad we've got, if we don't do a LOT better than last season, then either we will have a raft of injuries or something will be badly wrong with the team's mental approach.

7 Ollie Rayner
8 Tim Murtagh
9 Corey Collymore
10 Steven Finn
11 Toby Roland-Jones
12 Dan Housego
I have selected this team as I was once told that in the first month of a season you must always go bowler heavy but even when i typed this i thought this is crazy, hopefully Murts can score well at 8 for me.
2.Newman
3.Housego
4.Malan
5.Dexter(c)
6.Simpson(w/k)
7.Berg
8.Rayner

IMO Simpson is not ready for 6 let alone 5.
Correct Selly.
Also Berg should bat above Simpson every time....
Lower Mound, who won this competition in 2007, predicts our XI will be:
1. Scott Newman
2. Chris Rogers
3. Dawid Malan
4. Neil Dexter
5. Dan Housego
6. John Simpson
7. Gareth Berg
8. Ollie Rayner
9. Tim Murtagh
10. Toby Roland-Jones
11. Steven Finn
12th man: Anthony Ireland
So, he has included the Iceman, but predicts Simmo will bat ahead.
1. Rogers
2. Newman
3. Dexter*
4. Malan
5. Housego
6. Simpson+
7. Murtagh
8. Roland Jones
9. Ireland
10.Collymore
11.Finn
Sub.Crook
Interesting reading different opinions. Certainly Housego ahead of Robbo in pecking order but batting order not certain. Bowling wise It seems Collymore, Finn, Murtagh , Berg certainties so 1 place up for grabs with 4 genuine candidates. Then again there maybe a surprise

On scorecard Stan (Collymore) was above Finn, but thankfully this not reflected on batting line-up.
Darren a miniscule prize on it's way to you. Will contact you over the weekend re this.

. This competition was on my mind all day. So, Toby Roland-Jones was the one who was left out. I am sure many people were shocked like me when the first ball was faced by Scott Newman rather than Chris Rogers, as I think the only person to predict that Newman would face the first ball was Lower Mound. We both correctly named 10 of the XI, although neither of our 12th men were in the squad. As for getting the batting positions spot-on, Lower Mound beat me 5-4.
