Barmy Kev gives an analysis of the main contenders for MTWD player of season. Each candidate worthy and more can be said about their contributions then has been written.  Hopefully this will help you when the polls open later. 

 

Chris Rogers

Our overseas signing, Mr Consistent averaged 58.45. He dug us out of many holes when wickets falling around him.  I recall his big ton at Uxbridge against Glous  when we were in serious trouble. He took many spectacular catches, the one that stands out was the very crucial partnership breaker of De Bruyn at Guildford. His bold captaincy at end of season saw us clinch to promotion.

 

Sam Robson

Having scored heavily for 2nds was given chance and took it immediately.  His first game at Chelmsford we were 90-4, but turn things round with a 146. He saw us through in tricky situations under pressure for Kent and Sorry wins . A season's  average of 55.31 from 11 innings opening is a superb effort.


John Simpson    

We knew he could bat and he proved this with average of 42.66.  He saved us regularly, like against at Northants at home solid innings t. His suspect keeping?  Well all season I did not see any missed chances and kept competently.  A record breaking 65 dismissals this season says it all. 


Gareth Berg

 

His season was truncated by injury. Lets, look at the stats from his 7 county championship games. A batting average of 41.87 and bowling average of 19.96 taking 26 wickets. 1st game of season he destroyed Essex with his bowling, then saw us home next game with 2nd innings knock at Derby.  On return from injury got a 6fer at Glamorgan.  Then final game got us a big a lead, took 2 pressure catches in deep and bish bash bosh secured promotion with winning runs 6-4-6.

 

Tim Murtagh


 

80 wickets at 20.98, leading Div 2 wicket taker.   Two 5fers at Guildford made the difference.   His persistence at home to Derby got us through.    Supporting Berg with bat last game at Leicester gave us the lead that ended up being so vital.  Was players player of season.

Got to consistently bowl sides out to win LVCC matches, this was achieved, often in 2/3 days, but never on a certain bowler unfriendly deck. Much as CR has brought consistency and runs, for me it would have to be one of the bowlers.

Not made any easier,but gives good info for the 5 suggested players.Its going to be a VERY close run vote.

Great posting re the contenders.It was a difficult choice.

Bowlers do win you matches, particularly in the second division.

However you still have to score decent runs to give your bowlers something to aim at.

Rogers was so very consistent, and scored runs at vital times. However what really clinched it for me was when he stepped in as captain, when Dexter got injured, and did a really great job.

I selected John Simpson purely because he was the player that far exceeded my expectations from the start of the season. Some really important batting performances and his keeping has been excellent.

I am pleased to say that I could have picked any one of the contenders such has been the all round quality of our play this season.

If The Iceman hadn't missed so much of the season, I suspect he'd have won this by a mile. As it is, despite the immensely strong claims of the others mentioned I'm going with John Simpson.

How he doesn't warrant a place with the England Performance set-up, only the selectors know. Haven't they been watching him this season?

Robson's average was 59 from 18 innings, mate....otherwise top post!

Average for Sam is 55.31 as you said Kev. It was ofcourse 11 matches (not innings, so 18 innings, I hadn't even noticed that)

I would give my vote to John Simpson. He performed magnificently for a young lad both with bat and gloves. He is a Matt Prior type talent. Well done Simmo.!
