Stewards Enquiry

So,the season comes to an end,and has anyone ever wondered what happens to the Stewards and Green Team we see at Lords? Well,by luck I have found the answer.

It was just after the Olympic event finished at Lords and I was going to the club shop. The car park behind the museum was busy,a big lorry was off-loading straw and hay. Being a nosey sort, I asked the driver what was going on. He said didn't I know what the delivery was for? No was reply.

He then said, keep it to yourself and showed a hidden door, obviously I won't say where just it's to a side of the pavilion.

He said, have I got half hour free, I will show you? He gave a torch to me and I followed him. It was amazing,as this door led underneath the pavilion to a big room,it was being prepared with the straw and I'm now wondering just what is going on.

He then starts to tell me,he is the owner of the company providing the straw and has been doing the same job for 7 years. Same time of year the straw is laid out to get warm, and in two corners are free issue water dispensers with plastic cups.

Now,a week after the season finishes, the stewards are all led down to the straw, few days later the green team do the same.Stewards,of course get first selection for best straw). And,here they all stay in hibernation until March of the next year.

The room has two lights left on,but very dim so not to disturb the sleeping stewards/green team.I ask how do they know when they start to wake up?

I get shown the only window, its a one way window and can see inside only and the only microphone to pick up noises. He said from early March you get to hear them start to murmer 'Sit down please' 'Turn that phone off sir' 'Can i see your ticket please' 'You cant wear that in here, sorry'

When this starts, the lights get slowly turned brighter until the stewards and Green Team are happily up and about.Once they have been escorted to the shower room, and given  fresh, new uniforms they are allowed back out to roam the grounds of Lords and start to take up positions for the on-coming season.

So,there you have it folks. Finally we have found out just what the Stewards and Green Team do once the season has finished.

You did! I had thought they went on extensive training courses covering how to wear new jackets on the catwalk and perhaps general fitness training to wrestle unruly MCC members to the ground, so your article was most enlightening.

Kimmy,i will have to show you this special, hidden door when we are at Lords next,as there is no chance of you finding it.
Im hoping to be there when all the stewards and Green team get set free, have been told it is an experience to see,so bring camera along.
Its usually a month or so before the season starts.
