Guess Our Starting Line Up For The Opening Game

By MTWD ADMIN
March 30 2013

With just over a week to go to the start of the season our annual Guess Our Starting Line Up For The Opening Game competition is upon us.

For first game of the season at Notts 10th April,  I’m asking you to name your anticipated starting line up including the batting order and the nominated 12th man as per the scorecard.  To win you need to guess the following and if a draw this is play off order.

1/ The most players who are in your final 11.

2/ The most in correct batting order.

 3/ The 12th man

The other rule is all answers must be stated on this thread and you cannot replicate the exact line-up of anyone else.

If somehow there’s still a draw there will be a spurious tie-breaker question.

The deadline is 1 second to midnight 9th April.

A miniscule prize that may fall apart on receipt is up for grabs.

DB-

off topic so I apologise- but if you google 'jet stream' you get a site that gives you a 16 day projection of where jet steam is predicted to be.

Said projection has gone up and down a bit in last few days (and there is a bit more to the weather than just the jet stream) but for what it's worth things do look like they will start to improve in 10 days time- with weather up to about 15 degrees (which is infact more or less average for April)

Anyway, 10 days is far enough away it could easily go wrong- need to be 3 or 4 days away before you can really be confident with this prediction, but it's the first sign of potential good news for weeks.

12th Man

Rayner

So no exact same teams, but I think I have counted five so far that are identical in the first 11 and of these I think a couple of these have the same 12th man. For what its worth, this duplicate team is probably the team that we will go with. Just think it might be worth going with 5 seamers with Denly and Malan as spin on a green top in Nottingham in April.

I have seen only one duplicate team including batting order and 12th man The one who entered first will win, what has happened previously there has been an injury and suddenly team looks different for last minute entrants,

It looks like Darren has won this, as the inclusion of Gurjit Sandhu in Middlesex's squad for this match has thrown nearly everyone.

Good tactics from Darren. Remember it's the scorecard order that is first decisive factor and there are few other potential winner. Sadly that does not include me.

Kev - not tactics, more a case of only finding the thread once half a dozen teams had already been posted including the selection I would have made myself.
I think the XI was never in question - in fact 9 entries have the same XI.
Having missed the boat somewhat, I did wait to see what yesterday's second XI line up was before plumping for my 12th man.
Will come down to the correct batting order and who knows the 'nightwatchman' could throw everything of course.
Who would have thought that in this fixture last season we would have seen Rayner at 5, Dexter at 7 and Berg at 9 ?

In view of Trent Bridge traditionally favouring seamers/early season green tops not inducive to spin, I am personally disappointed Stirling is not being given a chance to bolster the middle order batting at the expense of last season's Trent Bridge hero Rayner....

Spot on for me barring rayner batting so low which is odd.

Does seem odd, will that be the actual batting line up though? Can`t see Harris batting at 7.

I feel I did quite well, as I got the line-up spot on, correctly said the order of our openers and am confident the rest of the our XI will bat in the order I predicted.

I am not totally sure why a lot of websites have Ollie Rayner down as being likely to bat at 10, as I would be very surprised if he bats that low. However, with so much batting talent amongst our bowlers, it is inevitable that whoever bats at 10 and 11 will have a decent batting record and thus feel like they would bat higher in most other teams. My prediction was that Rayner would bat at 7.

If you didn't know, here's our scorecard line up

Chris Rogers (C)
Sam Robson
Joe Denly
Dawid Malan
Neil Dexter
John Simpson (W)
Gareth Berg
James Harris
TobY Roland-Jones
Ollie Rayner
Tim Murtagh

12TH MAN Gurjit Sandhu

This was not easy to mark.

The majority got all of the XI. A few gambles with Ravi Patel, Adam London, Corey Colleymore that did not pay off. Out of the 10 that did get the XI right some struggled with order of top 3 and everyone was undone by the lower order positions.

By my calculations subject to an audit, rsethi managed the top score of 8 out of 11 in correct place. 12th man decider not relevant.

Congratulations rsethi. I hope to catch up with you for a miniscule prize presentation this season.

Anyone fancy marking next years competition?

Official announcement at the ground was that 12th duties were being SHARED by Sandhu and Podmore. Oreder on the card is not correct.

I think the batting order shown on scorecards or online is decided by a person whose decision-making is based on guesswork, although the main priority is to get the XI right as opposed to getting the batting order right.

If a change to the anticipated XI is announced at the toss, then the way that is often dealt with is by replacing the absent player(s)'s name with the new player(s)'s name, even if that could end up with the batting order according to the scorecard bearing little resemblance to the actual batting order. This often happens when a side decides to play an extra batsman or extra bowler compared to the anticipated XI.

Maybe whoever predicted today's batting order anticipated Gurjit Sandhu would play and bat at 10, only for Ollie Rayner rather than Sandhu to then be selected.
