Middlesex v Somerset , Uxbridge 2014

Seaxe Man report on the Uxbridge festival was scuppered due to his internet problems.  His ball by commentary sent is somewhere in the ether. A revised hand written version was sent to Kev for our later entertainment.   Hope you enjoy, despite the 4 month delay.

Day 1

Line -ups. Stirling replaced Denly. Barrow for Trescothick.

Middx won toss and elected to bat.  Rogers was out LBW for 7 at 21. There was pace and bounce in the wicket, which Somerset quicks Gregory and Thomas soon realised. Overton pitched short, giving Barrow a hard time, boosting the extras, with an “expert” behind me reckoned the keeper was at fault. In the meantime a stand of 109 developed between Gubbins and Malan, which was broken at 130 when Gubbins fell for 59 caught at wicket off Alfonso Thomas. Malan was in fine form with sumptuous cover driving. He was joined in stand of 73, during which Mala completed a classy century. A strangely subdued Morgan completed 12 before being dismissed by Trego.  Dexter was then dismissed by the same bowler for 4, at the stroke of tea. Dark clouds gathered, no further play possible 211-4 at close.

Day 2

Middx progressed 220 when Simmo was removed for a 16 ball duck off of a rampant Overton. A 50 stand between Mala and Stirlo ended at 279 Mala out for a classy 134.    Stirlo added a further 40 with TRJ before being bowled last over before lunch for an attractive 56 off 101 balls. This prompted 2 ducks Murtagh and Finn. Innings closed 338. TRJ 31.

A fiery spell by Finn reduced Somerset to 28-3, the wicket remaining pacey. A stand of 75 got their innings back on track before Dexter removed Hildreth for 53, his partner was Compo. They closed 153-4 with a further 8 overs lost to rain.

Day 3

A sunny day. Barrow who was looking obdurate was first to go run out direct hit by Gubbins for 36, score 187. Our old boy Trego made 24 before holing out to Finn on the boundary off Dext 219-6.  A few slogs from Thomas took the score to 224-9 when Tresco declared.

I must say being in hospitality tent encumbered some of my viewing of our innings. Buck went cheaply, a second hundred stand between Gubbins and Mala helped before Mala caught behind. We ended day 169-2, 143 ahead.

Day 4

Although forecast was for Armageddon, this proved a sunny day.  A declaration was on cards but when? Before that there was a mix up Gubbins/ Stirlo Gubbins run out on 95 with a maiden CC century looming.   The declaration was at 12:35 with with the lead 389, leaving the Cidermen requiring 390 off a minimum of 75 overs.  No doubt Buck was wary after Trent Bridge declaration and a fast outfield here. Suffice to say they settled for draw. Compo made 94 batting like an England no. 3. Handshake at 5:15

Summary/ Comments

A battle for 2 even matched teams

Eoin left field on one occasion, after being stung by bee.

The pace and bounce in the pitch got less on days 3 and 4, due I suspect to use of heavy roller.

The loss of 40 overs was not helpful to either side needing a win.

The hierarchy expressed satisfaction with the overall attendance circa 300, with 1000 on day 1. With loss of Sunday due to 20/20 blast, this was a decent turn out.

I could read your writing but I omitted a 0 in error. I admit I prefer the copy and paste method.
