Following 3 sensational County Championship performance by Phillip Hughes all captured by MTWD, I will leave with 3 one day match reports extracts word for word from different contributors. These show more of his impact for us on and off the pitch. RIP
Scotland v Middlesex. Barmy Kev
Throughout game Danny ( Evans) picked up the “C’Mon the Middle” cries and joined in and was dancing. This carried on during journey home and he appeared to educate Phil Hughes who happily recited “C’mon the Middle” repetitively in best Aussie accent.
Middlesex v Somerset. Middlesex Infinitum .
Dexter joined Yozzer at the crease and together they brought up the Middlesex 200 in the thirty fifth over. Then in the thirty eighth over Yozzer achieved his fourth century of the season, which came of 94 balls with 12 fours and a six.
This sparked a heated debate amongst my fellow members which raged well into to the interval. The issues raised in order of importance were:
Is Philip Hughes Middlesex’s greatest overseas batsman, nay overseas player?
Is he the most talented 20 year old you have ever seen?
How do England dismiss him?
Whilst this debate continued Dexter and Hughes busily accumulated 89 runs for the fifth wicket, with Hughes slapping another huge six into the Mound Stand, before he was caught by Suppiah off Phillips trying to force the pace for 119 off 112 balls.
Middlesex v Warwickshire. Beefy
Hughes is in his usual form for us blasting to 52 off 37 balls with 10 fours, mate Jeff saying he looks like he could be there all afternoon, at 57 off 43 balls he is out chasing a wide ball he is caught behind, as he walks back to the pavilion for the last time this season for us he gets a standing ovation form the Middle few that are in the ground. In total, Hughes scored 393 runs with one century and three fifties in Middlesex's Friends Provident Trophy campaign. It helped us scrape into the quarter-finals by virtue of the match between Warwickshire and Kent being tied on D/L after that match was abandoned 46.5 overs into Warks' innings with them 1 away from being where they would have needed to have been to secure the win required to deny Middlesex. The tie meant we finished level on points with the Bears and qualified on head-to-head result. Incidentally, a Kent win would have also been enough, as that would have put them in the same position as where Warks eventually finished (level on points with us, but having lost on head-to-head).
The Scotland match will probably be best remembered for Steven Finn gaining his nickname of 'Hi-Fi', Danny Evans forgetting where his bags were and Shaun Udal rushing to the toilet. The Somerset match will probably be best remembered for the umpires allowing our opponents more Powerplay overs than they should have faced in their D/L pursuit of 290 in 41 overs, which they achieved with 11 balls to spare.

Actually, I have realised that the criteria under which Middlesex qualified at Warwickshire's expense was most wins (we had won 4, they had won 3). I have also realised that had we finished level on poitns with Kent, the fact we beat them on TV at Canterbury wouldn't have meant we finished above them on head-to-head, as we lost to them at Southgate. However, we would have nonetheless finished above Kent on net run rate. The more I try to explain all this, the more it proves my point that we somehow scraped into the Friends Provident Trophy quarter-finals! It remains the last time we have progressed from the group stages of a limited-overs competition.
