Some vital statistics as match draws to a conclusion.
1 short of a x 2 century
July 3 2019
Talliman is a MTWD diehard who has not lost the will and shares some statistics we mainly fell short of. Thank you for sharing and challenging Dingy bags to July player of month award.
Today was a day of many questions on a day which didn't start out being likely to yield any result other than a draw. The crowd was sparse when I arrived and only thinned out during the day. It was a day for the diehards and statisticians.
Would Dawid make his highest score? Yes, beating the 182* vs Notts at Trent Bridge in 2015. A shame that he didn't make his double ton. The first poor shot he made, the first chance and it cost him his wicket for 199.
Would Middlesex record the highest 7th wicket partnership ever against Derbyshire? No, Dawid got out with the partnership on 224 against a record of 225.
Would Simmo reach his first ton since 2016? Yes, he played well throughout, the highlight being his four threes in his first 20 runs or so yesterday.
Would Middlesex reach 500? Yes, for the first time since Essex in 2017.
Would we record our highest innings total against Derbyshire? No, we finished 25 runs short of equalling the 545 made on the ground in 1994.
Could Middlesex force a win? No, an early breakthrough from Tom Helm in the Derbyshire reply followed by Hudson-Prentice running himself out trying to get his 100th run of the match. A couple of wickets by the Demon Sowter left Derbyshire 39/4 left the home fans worried about a collapse; Hughes collecting a pair in the process. Hosein and du Plooy survived some early scares, Toby being particularly unlucky but put on over 100 for the 5th wicket. Tea came and the over rate reset itself to zero again. Our phalanx of leg spinners kept going in the main after lunch, Robson finishing wicketless for the first time this season when he's bowled. Dawid and the Demon taking the last couple of wickets when the declaration came at 4:50.
It was good to see Middlesex battle back from such a poor early position, we need to take positives from this and force the play against Gloucestershire on Sunday. Another session in the game could've been very interesting but it wasn't to be!
