Darren Robinson has been named Essex Player Of The Year, 2002. Opening bat Robinson, who is 29, won the award sponsored by Essex Insulation.

Robinson Player Of Year

Robbo was Essex's highest run scorer in First-Class and Championship cricket, scoring 1474 runs in First-Class and 1289 runs in the Championship, with an average of 42.96 with 5 50's and 4 100's. It's the first time Darren has scored a 1000+ runs for the season and is testomony to a much more consistent season with the bat.

In one-day cricket Robinson scored 610 runs at 26.52 and was also a vital figure in leading Essex to the Benson & Hedges Cup Final, C&G Trophy Quarter-Final and promotion in the Norwich Union League.

He also lead Essex to Frizzell County Championship Division 2 glory with his consistent amount of runs and also captained Essex while Ronnie Irani and vice-captain Paul Grayson were playing with England or injured. He did it well, taking Essex to a fantastic win at Gloucestershire, scoring 175 in the 2nd Inns.

So, a deserved award for Robbo and 'Scimitars' would like to say well done for a great season's work. Only a year ago some fans were calling for Robbo to be released, but a year makes a lot of difference.

That might be the Official award, but 'Scimitars' will be giving fans the chance to vote for their Player(s) Of The Year and Moments Of The Year in the End Of Season 'Scimitars' Awards. More to come on that, so stay tuned to the messageboard for details.
