Young Overseas Bowler Needed!?

Essex have today revealed that they are looking for an 'emerging bowler' as their second overseas signing for the 2003 cricket season.

Andy Flower is expected to re-sign for next season once his international commitments have finished for Zimbabwe, after a superb first term at Chelmsford, but with two overseas players able to join counties from next season and Flower a batsman/keeper, a bowler is the target.
Chief Exec David East said: "We are currently looking around for a second player but we haven't jumped on anyone yet. I can confirm we are looking for a bowler to fill that position but I cannot discuss any names at the moment."
With Ashley Cowan possibly out for the season and the release of Mark Ilott, many think a opening strike bowler is needed. Names linked with this since the end of the season have been Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie, although Essex have signed two emerging fast bowlers, Adrian McCoubrey (who has visited this site) and Nick Denning.
Some think another spin bowler is needed to support James Middlebrook, with Pakistan's star leg-spinner Danish Kaneria being linked with us.
East went onto say: "We are really researching the market. It's quite a difficult thing to resolve with international commitments being what they are. We will probably go down the emerging player route."
It'll be an interesting decision to see what player we go for. I think we could possibly do with a strike bowler, although a top-class spinner has proved in Division 1 to lead their side to decent success, Saqlain at Surrey and Murali at Lancashire to name just two.
