Evenly balanced

Surrey and Sussex are evenly poised in their county championship match at Hove with one day remaining. Surrey need 8 wickets for victory and Sussex require 102 more runs to win. There could have been a result today but heavy rain in the afternoon season caused play to finish early.

Surrey started the day on 261 for 8 with a lead of 251 after Sussex were bowled out for 103. England star Alex Tudor clamed 5 for 66 and Kevin Innes scored 41 not out. Tim Murtagh went early on in the day but 47 from debutante Mushtaq Ahmed helped Surrey to 286 all out. England reject Ian Ward was the top scorer as he continued his good form with 76. For Sussex they’re young spinner Mark Davis claming 6 for 97.

Only 26 overs were possible in the Sussex reply but Surrey were able to capture 2 wickets. First Richard Montgomerie was caught behind off Giddins for 10, and then Tony Cottey fell LBW to Tim Murtagh. Murray Goodwin was not out 42 when stumps were called.
