Ward leads lions to victory

Ian Ward made 108 as Surrey beat Staffordshire by just 9 runs at Stone today. Surrey made 273 in their innings while Staffordshire made 264 for 4 from their 50 overs.

Staffordshire won the toss and decided to bat. They soon had Ali Brown out as he was caught and bowled by Willmott for 0. This left Surrey 2 for 1. Ward and Mark Ramprakash then put on 125 for the second wicket. Rampraksh only made 25 from this partnership when Humphries caught him off former Gloucestershire batsmen Kim Barnett. Staffordshire then took 3 quick wickets to leave Surrey 154 for 5. Rikki Clarke hit 47 while Adam Holliokae made a 33. Jon Batty (19) and Azhar Mahmood (20) helped Surrrey to 273 all out. But the star of the Surrey innings was Ian Ward. Ward hit a suburb 108 off just 87 balls, with 7 sixes and 11 fours.

Staffordshire started their innings well. Franklin and Barnett put on 30 for the first wicket before Barnett was caught and bowled by Azhar Mahmood for 12. Womble and Franklin had added 73 for the second wicket when James Ormond bowled Franklin for 39. Womble made 49 when he was caught by Ali Brown of the occasional spinner Mark Ramprakash. Graeme Archer hit 65 and Shaw scored 55 not out as Staffordshire made 164 off their 50 overs. They fell just seven runs short off Surrey’s total. Although Staffordshire were helped during their innings as Surrey decided to not bowl their front lines bowlers fully. Saqlain Mushtaq only bowled 5 overs and James Ormond was the only Surrey front line bowler to bowl his allotted 10 overs. Ian Ward bowled 10 overs, Rampraksh was given sixes overs while Ali Brown bowled 2 overs.
