Surrey beat Yorkshire by just to runs in a thrilling match at Headingley. Yorkshire looked to have won the match at 188 for 4 but discipline bowling from Surrey reduced Yorkshire to 200 for 8.

Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bowl. Ian Ward soon departed for 21 when he was caught behind with Hoggard the bowler. Brown and Butcher took the score to 91 when Brown fell for 50 off 50 balls. Butcher was next to fall when he was dismissed by Kirby for 12. Thorpe followed soon for just 2 on the day he received his England re call. Surrey were. Rikki Clarke then came in and continued in his run of form with 46 but he had no support from the rest of the Surrey batting order. Only one player out from the Surrey bottom six hit double figure as they collapsed from 107 for 4 to 202 all out.

Surrey made an early breakthrough with Azhar Mahmood claimed the wicket of Matt Wood. Fleimg and Vaughan then took the score to 50 but then Fleming fell to Bicknell for 27. James Ormond then took two quick wickets for the lions to leave the tykes 68 for 4. Firstly he removed lumb for 0 and then he took the wicket of McGrath for 1. England captain Michael Vaughn and Victor Craven then put on 120 and they looked to won the match for Yorkshire. But Surrey managed run out both Vaughan and Craven and also take the key wickets of Blakey and Dawson and win the match by just two runs. From 188 for 4 and needing just 15 for victory Surrey had managed to reduce the tykes to 200 for 8 and win the match. Surrey now look set to win the national league.
