Second defeat for lions

Surrey lost their second consecutive county championship game by a huge innings and 155 runs. Surrey now look set to miss out on the county championship after Sussex beat Middlesex.

Kent made a huge total of 535 in there first innings with Andrew Symonds hitting 121 and Mark Ealham scoring 93. For Surrey Tim Murtagh was the leading wicket taker with 4 wickets.

Surrey then started badly in there reply. Martin Saggers removed Ian Ward, Mark Ramprakash, Nadeem Shahid and Ali Brown to leave Surrey 30 for 4. John Batty 28, Rikki Clarke 28, Ian Salisbury 16 and Tim Murtagh 17 helped Surrey reach a poor 125 all out. This left the lions a massive 400 runs behind Kent on first innings.

Kent then decided to enforce the follow on. John Batty fell early to Mark Ealham to leave the lions 23 for 1. Ian Ward and Mark Rampraksh then took the score to 62 when Ramprakash fell to Saggers. Just 6 runs later and Saggers removed Shahid for just 1. Surrey were now 68 for 3. Ian Ward scored 53 to help Surrey reach 112 for 4. Rikki Clarke and Adam Hollioake were both dismissed cheaply but Ali Brown scored 40 to help Surrey reach 159 for 7. James Ormond scored 32 and debutante Franklin Rose hit 36 but Surrey were all out for another poor score of 255. Surrey had lost by an innings and 155 runs. This was Surrey’s second consecutive county championship defeat and Sussex now look set to win the title they beat Middlesex.
