The run is over

Warwickshire stunned the undefeated Surrey team by taking all ten of their second innings wickets in the last session of today’s play. Surrey had required 169 to win off 34 overs, but as the last five wickets fell for 34, Warwickshire gained a 31 run win.

Surrey had looked to be in control after the game after Mark Ramprakash scored his second double century in two games. He also shared in his 3rd consecutive century stand with impressive youngster Rikki Clarke who scored 79. Warwickshire were then enforced to follow-on after Jimmy Ormond’s first five-wicket haul for Surrey helped bowl the bears out for 293. In their second innings they made a bright start with Michael Powell (95) and Mark Wagh (43) putting on 85 for the first wicket. Jamie Troughton also continued his superb form, hitting 94. However, Ormond once again ripped through the lower order in the afternoon, finishing with career best match figures of 10-178.

Surrey never recovered from a bad start in their second innings, with Jon Batty and the in-form Ramprakash both going for ducks in Shaun Pollock’s opening over. They never recovered and Adam Hollioake (52) and Alistair Brown (33) provided the only resistance.

The result leaves Middlesex as the only unbeaten team over the two divisions after the crusaders continued their magnificent form, beating Gloucestershire by 5 wickets. Surrey do, however, remain top of Division 1.
