Northampshire beat Surrey by 102 runs on the D/L method. But Surrey had to field a reserve side because the first team were in Headingly preparing for their B and H semi-final against Yorkshire witch takes place tomorrow.

Stand in Surrey skipper Ian Sailsbury lost the toss and Northampshire decided to bat. They got off to a good start reaching 55 for 0, but then Gary Butcher bowled Michael Hussy for 18. Runs came easily for Northampshire because of the inexperience in the Surrey bowling attack. When veteran David Ward caught David Sales for 67 off the bowling off James Benning for 67 the score was 179 for 2. Matt Cassar then scored 54 and Mal Loye scored an unbeaten 101 as Norhamptionshire were 277 for 5 off 40 overs. Their innings was reduced by 5 overs because rain interrupted their innings for a short while.

More rain then delayed Surreys reply so Surrey were set 264 off 29 overs. This was a huge total but David Ward 78 and Scott Newman put on 89 for the first wicket. But after this the inexperience off the Surrey batting line up showed as Michael Carberry 13 and James Bennig 10 were the only players to reach double figures after Ward and Newman. Surrey were bowled out for 162 loosing by 102 runs on the D/L method.

Although this was a heavy defeat Surrey they will not be pleased with the performances off James Benning who took 2 wickets, Scott Newman who scored 30 and veteran David Ward who came out of retirement for this game and scored 78.
