As the curtain depressingly falls on another summer, and autumn beckons, it is time to conduct an end of term report for Yorkshire's second string team. To be fair to the county and the assorted personnel who have competed on behalf of the second XI, the white rose is blessed with considerable strength in depth, and our reserve staff have been admirably plunged into the Yorkshire Bank forty-overs tussles in order to blood them for future combat.
Admittedly, the second XI have experienced an average campaign in their respective championship, but a number of players have made valuable contributions, thereby pressing their claims for future promotion to the first XI. Yorkshire has historically been a breeding ground for England greats, and given the fact that many of our illustrious personnel get regularly upgraded to full international honours, the importance of having an assembly line that produces worthy replacements for our absent England players is absolutely crucial.
Anyhow, here follows my 'prestigious award' for the Yorkshire second XI's best player of 2013. I nominate the promising all-rounder Jack Leaning for such an accolade. Frequently upgraded to the first XI's unimpressive forty-overs forays, Jack did acquit himself well in such duties. However, my decision is based on his consistent scoring in various second XI skirmishes. In total, Leaning recorded six half centuries and a 3-28 for the 'reserves' and a 60 and a 5-22 for the first XI in the Yorkshire Bank limited-overs tussles. His top score of 77 suggests that he needs to start converting his half centuries into big tons. That has to be his challenge, going forward. Sorry Jack but there is no cash prize or silverware for this award, but your grandchildren and assorted descendants will be able to eternally google this fine tribute in future times.
Other second XI players, whose efforts deserve a special round of applause are Moin Ashraf, Dan Hodgson, Azeem Rafiq, and Oliver Robinson. They can expect to be taken seriously as first XI candidates for the near future.
For the benefit of any fellow statto, here follows a summary of all of the Yorkshire second XI's results in the three competitive contests from 2013.
