An Extremely Helpful No Result!

Yorkshire's group commitments in the Royal London One-Day Cup began and ended with matches abandoned due to rain. Northamptonshire had already defeated the Vikings en route to a place on finals day of the Twenty20 Blast, so they would have provided formidable opposition, not least because a win for them would have seen them overtake the Tykes, thereby pinching a place in the quarter finals. Therefore, it was something of both a disappointment and a relief for the white rose county that no contest was possible due to the Leeds rain. It meant that the English county champions could qualify for the last eight without a ball being bowled. The east Midlands county by contrast would be narrowly denied a place in the knockout stages.
In truth, Northamptonshire's hard luck story cannot be blamed upon the erratic Yorkshire weather. If the Steelbacks had performed better in previous outings, then they would not have left their hopes resting on the final fixture. As a consequence, Durham can also thank their lucky stars because both Northamptonshire and Yorkshire could have squeezed past them, but a no-result outcome at Headingley enables Durham to qualify for the last eight in the fourth qualifying position.
The Tykes will now be drawn away to the second-placed county in the other group, the identity of which will not be revealed until after Wednesday's matches from that group are completed.
