An Awful Display

In spite of a fine century from the impressive Trott, Yorkshire just about managed to trot into the quarter finals of the One Day Cup. However, this was the home team's second failure to chase down a total in two days, reinforcing the view that they are more comfortable batting first and confirming that the team is lightweight in the absence of Bresnan, Rashid, and the three England batsmen. Of course we were treated to another abject performance from Lees and Rhodes, but that sadly has become par for the course nowadays. If I was Travis Head in the debriefing or post-match post mortem, I'd be asking "Is there any chance that some of you guys might hit some runs as well?"

Head ended up scoring more runs than Leaning, Lees, Lyth, and Willey put together. David Willey is not really opening batsman material in fifty-overs cricket. Maybe it is time to swallow their pride and recall Andrew Gale. Anyhow, the team has earned themselves an away tie, which may be a blessing in disguise, as their home form is nothing to write home about. The knockout stages will see teams who click on the day and who raise their game prevail over those who don't hit the ground running. If Yorkshire play anywhere near their best cricket, they will be near unstoppable, but if they bat second and don't play near their best cricket, they will be very stoppable!

Finally, it would be good to see our bowlers just occasionally take four or five wickets. Other counties can manage this, but our lot seem incapable of running through a batting line up. Sharing the wickets is lovely in a team effort sort of way, but seriously there is a marked failure of any of our bowlers to terrorise opposition batting. However, maybe it's our batting, or lack of it, which is the biggest concern. Still, we are in the last eight of both one day tournaments, so we must be doing something right- or could it be that there just happens to be at least ten first class counties who are even worse than us? Answers on a postcard.
