PRESS RELEASE: Barry Stewart joins Saints.

Northampton Saints today announced the signing of Scotland international prop Barry Stewart.

The 32 year-old Edinburgh-born tight-head won five caps between 1996 and 2000 with his debut coming against the All Blacks at Eden Park, Auckland. He headed south to join Sale Sharks in 2002 where won the European Challenge Cup in 2002 – under present Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder – and the Guinness Premiership in 2006.

Highly regarded by coaches and fans alike, Stewart has a reputation for powerful scrummaging and hard work around the park. He is also durable and by the end of last season had made over 100 appearances in the Premiership in a little over four years. 

He has signed a two-year contract with the Saints and is looking forward to reuniting with former boss Mallinder at Franklin’s Gardens.

“I’m thrilled at the prospect of being under Jim’s tutelage again,” said Stewart. “He’s an honest man who wants to get the best out of people. It’s also a great opportunity for me to make a positive contribution to the future of Northampton. It’s a club which has a fantastic heritage and Franklin’s Gardens has always been a difficult place to play in a visiting side. I’m looking forward to being a part of a successful side next season.”

“I worked with Barry at Sale for three years and know him well,” said Mallinder. “His quality as a player is recognised by everyone he’s played with and against and he brings plenty of experience and nous to our squad. Equally important is his character and Barry is popular in the changing room.

“I had no hesitation in bringing Barry to Northampton and he’ll be a great success. I’m looking forward to working with him again.”
