Old Pete's Puzzler 10

Pete returns after a weekend recharging his batteries with some more Puzzlers for the residents of the Little Billing home for the terminally bewildered.
An Englishman an Irishman a Welshman and a Scotsman - not necessarily in that order and maybe more than one of some .
Please identify and explain the following
1. Probably best known for his cryptic strides his public life ended in Canada .
2. Who had shoes bought for him as a result of a chance meeting with an actress
3. Born in Manchester he eventually married his " darling pussy " much to the distress of his children two of whom went their own way politically
4. his dramatic involvement with a monastic house was ended not by an abbot but by a fellow man of letters . He died in Torquay.
5. He went to the same school as my Dad and chronicled not very much
6. A misogynist preacher who some say drove out a queen

Pete you should know better than to set such fare before an unreconstructed Liberal:

q5 - Whilst I do not know your Dad I assume he was known as Mr. Kennedy? - hence are we looking for someone that went to the same school as any of those famous US Kennedy's?
Kennedy went to some school called Canterbury something - Catebury tales was written by Chaucer who also wrote the Chronicles.. So.. Im going for Chaucer.

Rich - you got it- John knox - who coined the phrase " a monstrous regiment of women " hence th mysogenist preacher - and whose sermons and personal interviews with - rants at Mary Queen of Scots so stirred up the protestant nobility against her - she fled the country and the rest is history.

No2? Guy Burgess met actress Coral Browne in Russia some time after he defected.I beleive she did some shopping for him back in London. There was also a play written about this meeting.

Stella - right on - it is Guy Burgess whose chance meeting with Corale Brown is re told in Alan Bennets An English Man Aboad starring Corale Brown as herself and Alan Bates as Burgess.
There is a lovely scene where she buys him some shoes from a very posh shop in London. ( we may assume that they were Churchs' finest )

Well done St M! I ma feeling rather stupid. Id gone for John Buchan with the Canada clue but for some reason completely missed the 39 steps connection with the cryptuc strides. Nice one OP - I liked it even if it exposed the limitations of my lateral thinking

Dylan wrote Under Milk Wood, which takes place in the town of Llareggub. As any fule no, that's Bug-ger All backwards, so he chronicled "not very much"!
