A few morsels while OldPete gathers his breath

Some Towns and Cities to occupy you while waiting for the season tickets (cards) to arrive

  1. The Granite City, Fruity Cake, a Posh Place and the City of a Thousand Trades are all linked to the Ukraine. How?
  2. Bath, Westminster, Stirling and Newry are all lacking what?
  3. Newcastle, Exeter, Cardiff and Bristol all possess what?

Is #2 something about cathedrals that aren't? They're all cities, but Bath has an Abbey, as does Westminster. Are the others the same?

Doesn't Westminster also have a cathedral, the Catholic one?

Emma - Correct
It was custom that Cities had a Cathedral - these do not - For reasons of historical precedent,RC Cathedrals don't count.

Richard - you are so warm - & so numerically challenged.

Is the Ukraine question the 4 places that people living near Chernobyl refused to relocate to on the basis they weren't that desperate?

Sorry, minds all out of sync this morning after hearing this sad news

Oh yeah I meant 1!

So is it they all have a St. Andrews something i.e. Birmingham city play at St. Andrews, Aberdeen has a St.Andrew's cathedral and so has Dundee whilst also being close to the R&A, St. Andrew is said to have preached in the Ukraine and so has Dundee. Is that like it?

You are practically there Rich
They all have cathedrals dedicated to St Andrew, (Birmingham's is a Greek Orthodox before anyone jumps in!)
St Andrew is the patron Saint of Ukraine. (Also Russia and Romania)

A clue to the 3rd - The thing that they have in common would sometimes give rise to an event that would usually have a lesser event taking place immediately afterwards.

sort of chain reaction.

How can you accept a Greek Orthodox cathedral in one question then not a Catholic one in the next?

I'm writing to the BBC!

The association between having a cathedral and being called a city was established in the early 1540s when Henry VIII founded dioceses (and therefore cathedrals) in six English towns and also granted them all city status. I don't make the rules, the monarch does.

The previous question was nothing to do with City status.

Feel free to write to Auntie - unless it is a letter pointing out some "non-PC event" - it will be ignored.

Now come on - 1 question left - let's get this show on the road!!

So the answer to question 3 wasn't to do with St.James Park? Or is it the third question but actually number 2 we're after. I'm jolly confused!

Time's up!
3.
Most Cities have a Mayor. These are among the Cites that have have a LORD Mayor (& I have just realised I could have used 2 Saints players as clues!)

Lord Mayors quite often have a "Lord Mayor's Show" (....after the Lord Mayor's Show..lets get this show on the road etc.)

So is the fact that they all have a market, but neither is the correct answer....

They also all have a family called 'Smith' living in a road that ends with the name 'Street', therefore I claim my £5.
