Summer Quiz round three -
Very much a Miscellany this time
- which is the odd one out and why - A Cardinal , a river crossing , a group of dancing men; a heavenly body; a top predator;?
- Henry VIII was awarded the title of Defender of the faith by the Pope but who and why did someone later became known as " The saviour of Christian Europe .?
- Which of these should have had something to hide but didn't and why - G . F Handel, William Walton; William Bird, Henry Purcell, Ralph Vaughan Williams.?
- Whose alleged receipt of silver and a ribbon for his coat was seen as the epitome of betrayal?
- Which country without a navy or coastline and no monarch was once ruled by a regent who was also an admiral.
- Of what and when was it once famously asked " Is this the sort of book that you let your servants read ?
- Who created a monster during a dissapointingly cold summer holiday in Switzerland?
- What is the connection between cricket and a headache cure?
- Which musical locomotive preceeded the activities of a rather posh investigative couple ?
- How did the Americans substitute a Man City striker for a former French soldier?
Well domnne to those who got the answers to others correct.
the answers to questions 3, 9, and 10 are.
3- is a list of British / Engish composers - William bird who did his bit for music in the latter half of Elizabeth 1sts reign was a not so closet catholic. At a time when his co religionists were regarded in much the same way as Muslims are today he made no secret of his religion.
9. " Coronation Scott " was the name of a famous locomotive and was also the title of a piece of music - this music was used to introduce the radio crime drama PAUL TEMPLE - who was quite posh and with his wife Steve thrilled us with their crime fighting exploits in the 1950s.
10. The French ex soldier is Martin Guerre in the film starring Gerard Depardieu - it told the story of a soldier returning from the wars in the 17th century to claim that he is the long lost husband of a rather nice " widow ".
This story was remade by Hollywood under the Title " Summerbee " it starred Richard Gere and was set after the American civil war. Mike Summerbee was a Man City footballer back in the days when soccer players didn't fall over if touched by a fairy kiss.

1: I have four of the answers that are all to do with cars: Wolseley, Ford, Morris and Mercury but am stumped on the last on
8: Cricket bats are made from willow...willow is of the Salix family...Salycilic Acid comes from willow bark .... Salycilic acid is the active ingredient in Asprin. QED
I did think that #9 might have been something to do with Ian Flemming writing both Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and James Bond but now I'm not so sure.

As an aside at 10.30pm tonight on BBC4 there is a repeat of the play concerning the fictional relationship between two of the jurors at the trial and er... their experimentations.

Oh dear - Q1 - apparently my odd one out isnt so - never heard of car mark called Mercury. correctly identified are Morris ; Wolsey ; Ford

No.2: The only answer I can come up with is John III Sobieski.

5 Hungary? Its landlocked had an Admiral (Horthy) as a regent at the time they joined the Axis. Im assuming by having no monarch it means not at that time rather than never in its history?

Wee Jim gets it right with Hungary post world war 1and throughout WW 11. .Admiral Horthy who was Regent for we presume the departed Hapsburgs.
But that locomotive is really causing some problems - perhaps you are all to young .

Q9 There's a piece of music called Puffin' Billy, which I know as the theme to Five Go Mad In Dorset. I know it's been used elsewhere in the past - perhaps for something on the wireless?
