close enough Simon - Orwells real name was Blair - he picked the nom de plume - Orwell because he spent his childhood summer holidays in suffolk near the river Orwell - and he wrote 1984.

I shall clearly have to go further into the arcane and occult in future rounds -
Yes Jim it is " Shoot " - as " Fire " has other rather serious implications on board a ship.
Sarge - Correct - Julie Christie played Bathsheba in Far from the Madding crowd - and Bathsheba was lusted after by King David in the Bible story.
and - yes it was Christine Keeler who was bestowing her favours on the Russian attache ( KGB ? ) and on Mr Profumo.
Jazzman - correct Saltlake City Utah - a flock of Seagulls are supposed to have saved the moremons first havest from ravaging bugs. THis is known as the miracle of the seagul.

Ok Sebastepol - colour of the ribbon for the Victoria Cross. It was started after the Crimean War but I think the frist citations were for that battle. I dont know what the colour is called -Tyrean purple? And thats where my reasoning completely falls down.

1. A tune (American I believe) written in the 1850s called 'Nellie Gray' uses the same chorus and tune as 'Maggie May' (which predates Nellie by som 20/30years at least).
So Maggie and Nell(ie Gwynn) could be connected,but where Trinidad Lopez II fits in I know not. Unless he purloined the tune too for one of his songs?

With regard to number 10, I think we need to think laterally and consider who OP whould read.
I can see him identifying with Frost, Dalziel and Morse but not Marple and other 'posh' types.
So if that is true, knowing OP he would seek to know a bit about the authors...
So did any of Dexter,Hill or Dangerfield(?) have a penchant for socks, or have an 'incident' concerning same?
...although of course I could be completely wrong as usual.

Ok it thursday 20.00 hrs and i am having an early night - asi am off to Reading tomorrow to visit family / grandchildren.

Q2 the battle of Magenta 1859 French ( & Piedmont ) v Austria
the reddish purple colour known as "Magenta " is supposedly derived from the colour that blood stained the red trousers of the french infantry.
Q10 - answer- SWedish author - Henning Mankell the creator of Wallender was on one of the boats trying to break the blockade of gaza - he reported in various newspaper interviews that the israelis - " took my wallet , credit cards and even my socks "
