Saints Super Summer Sojourn Across the States - Day 9
By Jon in Alaska
August 1 2010
Having spent the night in the luxury of a campground in the middle of nowhere, Jon so close to Alaska and Former Hollywood Saint are on to the penultimate day. They continue north, cross the 60th parallel, and enter their final Canadian state.
Day 9
We carried on bearing north by leaving Liard River Hot Springs early in the morning. A night spent at the camping ground felt much better than being alone as potential bear food in a large tin with wheels.

Entering the Yukon Territories, our last part of
Canada
It must be said at this point, there isn't much in the way of human life in northern British Columbia and Yukon. However the scenery makes up for this in abundance. British Columbia offers the end of the Rockies, which technically finishes at the Liard River. Then come the rolling hills, mountains, trees and vast lakes of Yukon Territory. If for some unknown and ultimately random reason you find yourself in this part of the world then pack your camera because the scenery is simply breathtaking. But therein lies the problem. Unfortunately you probably won't find yourself here. If you did, then it would probably be by accident. Plus apart from the scenery there is virtually bugger all here.

Just one example of the terrible scenery
accompanying us
After Jon's second love (hopefully after Mrs Jon in Alaska) - the camera - spectacularly died, photography has now passed on to me alone. The scenery as mentioned before did not disappoint, although things were made difficult by the sheer number of bugs on the windscreen. It must be mentioned at this point about our collection. So far we have proudly made a rather large dent in the North American mosquito, midge, fly, bee, wasp and various other winged beastie populations. Once there was a U-Haul sign on the top of our truck, now a blackened mass of bugs that all have one thing in common. The last thing to go through their minds was their back sides.

The UHaul bug collection
We arrived at Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon with plenty of time to spare. We sampled the local cuisine at Pizza Hut and, for the second time on the trip, made our way to the nightly rest spot of a Walmart car park. Whitehorse itself is a bit of a shame. It would be amazing to live here as there is everything you need here. Unfortunately, if you needed, or wanted to go elsewhere for a change then it would be either 6 hours one way or 10 hours the other. We have done the 6 hour drive today, so what lays ahead is the final 600 miles or 10 hours of driving. The one (main) thing that is pushing us there ever quicker? A shower and a bed that isn't either the front seat of a truck or a glorified tin can. Onwards and Alaska-wards.
Distance travelled: 4910 miles.
States visited: 19 - ME, NH, MA, NY, PA, OH, IN, MI, IL, WI, MN, IA, SD, WY, MT, ID, AB, BC, Yukon Territories (YT).
