Maynard guns down the Outlaws

The former England international shared in an unbeaten third-wicket partnership of 117 with David Hemp as Glamorgan passed the home side's target of 221 with more than eight overs to spare.

Glamorgan's reply had got off to a solid start with captain Robert Croft and Ian Thomas putting on 52 for the first-wicket within the opening 10 overs. Croft, assuming his regular one-day role of pinch-hitter, made 36 at more than a-run-a-ball before he nicked Andrew Harris through to Chris Read behind the stumps.

Thomas added another 55 with Hemp, taking Glamorgan past the 100 mark before left-armer Nicky Boje squeezed a ball through between bat and pad. That was to be the home side's last breakthrough, though, as Maynard showed his class to earn the Dragons their fourth win of the season. He worked Boje around the outfield at will, scoring off virtually every ball, as the Nottinghamshire spinner struggled to stem the flow of runs.

Paul Franks was brought back into the attack in an attempt to turn the game back towards the hosts, but he went for eight an over as Maynard cut loose. He eased on to the front-foot to drive the seamer through the covers, and pulled him to the deep midwicket boundary to score the winning runs with his 11th boundary of the innings.

Nottinghamshire's innings was a stop-start affair, with a number of batsmen getting a start but failing to go on to make a big score. The Glamorgan attack took wickets at regular intervals, but the home side were able to keep their momentum going to score at almost five an over.

The only partnership of note was the 64 that Boje and Kevin Pietersen put on for the fifth wicket after Nottinghamshire had slipped to 92 for four at the end of the 15th over. The pair steadied the ship, keeping the scoreboard ticking over with a succession of cuts and pushes off spinner Croft and slow left-armer Dean Cosker.

Croft's decision to bowl in tandem with Cosker had the desired effect of keeping the batsmen in check, though, and the home side were never able to cut loose on a wicket which did enough to keep the spinners on top.

Pietersen eventually looked to kick on, but Cosker found some extra turn to bowl him for 36, and Nottinghamshire struggled to up the pace sufficiently in the latter stages of their innings. Boje was bowled by Croft for 39 three overs later and, while Franks chipped in with an enterprising 23, the Outlaws' total always looked 20 or 30 runs short of what would be needed.

Australian paceman Mike Kasprowicz returned to take two wickets at the death, and his figures of three for 39 were just reward for a disciplined performance at both ends of the innings.
