The road to the new season tends to start with the meeting that puts the last season to bed - the Annual General Meeting. This year it is even more like that as the AGM was put back after January storms. Many thanks to the people who contributed to this report of events, it is the one part of working in Oman that is affected. How I miss that wander into the pavilion on some miserable winter's evening
So, what did we find out that we didn't already know?
Bristol Rob started us off
Attendance I'd estimate approx 300,a good turnout again.
New sponsors Tribute
New beers Tribute plus others from St Austell Brewery. Everybody attending were treated to a free pint.
Marcus is fit.
Vic said keeper issue will be sorted,so no problems there.
Old scoreboard being refurbished so no problems there.
Old Pavilion work mainly taking place winter of 2014/15

AGM- Very well attended. Top table included Hurry, Nash, Lavender and Marks, no Tres (assume getting ready for Eng/NZ sky gig tonight)
Nash spoke very well, nice presentation, lots of slides indicating how well run we are, and how well we do in relation to other counties in numerous aspects of cricketing matters. We were shown plans of the new stand to replace the Old Pavillion and Somerset stand, think they mentioned aim is for 2014/15.
Hurry again spoke excellently I thought, answered Jos/Craig question in only way he could, "when Dave, Jos and Craig are all back they will sit down with each individually and collectively and come up with a solution" (we were never going to get any more than that)
Tres is fit and fully expected to take full part in the season.
The old scoreboard is being bought back to life so we're promised to fully operational main scoreboards for the season. The PA system being overhauled too.
Issues of parking, ground entry are being looked into.
Fast bowlers being sent to SA shortly for a week pre season as an area identified to try and avoid injury issues of last week, they will be under supervision of Dave Nosworthy whilst there.

Jos has one year left on his contract and Craig K has two.
The Taunton £1m loan is over fifteen years at 4% interest.
The ECB £1M is a grant not to be re-payed but is taxable.
The T20 next year will be seven home matches spread over one every two weeks.
The two scoreboard issue is because of what supporters told the club, Andy Nash said we do listen.
Membership last year was nearly 7000 last season and this year so far is about the same as the same time last year.
SCCC has the 4th highest players cost, the 3rd highest subscription income and the 3rd highest gate income.

The situation with regard to Petersen batting in the middle order was mentioned in regard to limited over cricket. Andy Hurry was concerned that we struggled on low slow wickets and wanted an experienced player who can rotate the strike if we lose early wickets.
And finally from Sloop John B
Further on the ground development - Andy Nash at one point mentioned, almost as a by-the-way, that after the final phase of the ground development had been completed it would take no more than another £100,000 to complete any other works needed to gain International Cricket status.
Funds for the development 'in the bank' consisted of the grant from ECB (which has arrived) plus about £250,00 other funds. As said elsewhere the TDBC loan is of a £1m at 4% and I gained the impression the loan period was possibly open-ended! What was not said wa how much the development was likely to cost on present designs!
Alex Tetley, treasurer who is standing down this year stated that the level of debt the club was carrying was relatively low (to other clubs) and is therefore easily manageable.
Just had a quick look at the new SCCC website and at the foot it is stated that Tribute is the club Title partner and Thatchers is listed as the Cider partner.

Unfortunately, I shall not be able to return in time to attend the club's re - scheduled AGM tomorrow evening.
Should any contributors to this site be able to so attend, then I am sure that many of us would be most interested to read a brief summary or report of what took place.
I am sure that the powers - to - be at the club have much about which to inform us.

I remain to be convinced there IS a Buttler/Kieswetter situation. Sure, there was half a sentence in reply to a question in an interview, to the effect that he MAY have to think about it at some point - and I agree we MAY have a situation during this season or later - but not really yet...

Some interesting points will be raised I think. As with last season, I think that our fortunes may well be resting on how far the young ex-academy lads have improved and perform. Any thing approaching last years deeds, and I think we will be "quids in". I hope to be there tomorrow checking on Marcus's ankle!!

I think you are almost certainly right, SP. This is far more likely to become a "situation" if people (particularly those of us who actually know very little about the case) keep talking about a potential crisis, instead of letting those closest to things work out the best way forward.
It reminds me of my days of dealing with Chinese officialdom when in Tibet - the officials would keep reminding me that "Tibet is a special case", to which I longed to respond (but diplomatically did not do so) by saying every time you say it is special you make it even more special.

I think the keeper situation is a storm in a teacup with not a lot of news about other than game days.The press men have to fill their days somehow or other or there will be no job there for them.
I wouldn't think the club would indicate one way or the other whether there was a situation or not.Best left for Dave Nosworthy to manage the keeper position when he arrives.I'm sure he's well aware of Jos and Craig's capabilities as he's in regular contact with the club.

Saw a tweet from someone at the AGM. His words were hurry knows the wk situation is an"issue" and talks are planned when all including nosworthy are in Taunton. Both will have left by the time he gets to Taunton!!!

Nope, "soon" was only mention of it, nobody really pushed it either, Vic very keen we all welcome him as he's sure we will.
They did say about our "quicks" going over for week soon for warm weather and bowling training, which Dave will be overseeing so he's clearly still there for whenever that is.
Mention of electronic contact between him and craig and him and jos re the keeping issue, so he is aware of it, and will be dealing with it when all are at HQ in person pre season.
Dave said to me on twitter the other day directly that he expected Visa issues to be soon resolved and expected to be with us around March 15th....

After discussions with The South African cricketing authorities it is intended to use Alviro Petersen as a middle order batsman rather than opening.

I assumed we'd signed AP in large part to cover Compton.
I'd have thought that, rather than simply sending the fast bowlers to SA, we could have send the whole team out there to work with Nosworthy - has to beat SkyPe.

Capacity will rise to 12,750 after redevelopments and with temporary seating.
It was nice to meet a few cricketing friends again last night.
I always think the season is not long away after the AGM.Even more so this year after the postponement of the original meeting.
Sorry about my postings being "bitty"but my powers of memory retention are not what they used to be and I would rather post something as I remember it rather than leaving it until I've remembered everything.

Richard Gould is giving us some white seating which will replace the rather tired green seats in front of the old scoreboard.
Surrey are having a refit at the Oval at the moment.

I agree nice touch from Surrey. I cannot tell a lie but they said "you can have a choice of a couple of things we are throwing out - the chairs or Kartik?" There was not really any choice was there!!!

I assume that the idea is for Marcus annd Craig K to be the usual openers in limited overs but marcus and Alviro in the CC.

Alf played his last T20 game in Bangla Desh yesterday so with seven weeks to the start of the season he could well take a few weeks rest if he thinks he needs it.

Maybe Kallis or Amla or somebody is moving up to open for SA in ODIs then?
It would seem strange for AP to move to the middle order in Tests given the strength of the guys that SA have in their Test middle order.
I think Mr Hurry's idea sounds a sensible one.

No.hes off to SA to play for the Titans in their T20 competition. Re Alviro, I think he bats down the order for the Lions in all but t20 competetions. Wouldnt surprise me if he does that in all comps for us, meaning Arul stays as opener in CC cricket. Always good to have Arul's spin option too.

If Compton plays for England then it would not be ideal for AP to bat any lower than three for Somerset in CC cricket, IMO.
After all, who else do we have that would appear to be any kind of natural at three?

No intention to set up an argument - after all events will soon determine who is right - but Alf is still listed on the Pune Warriors own site as in the squad for 2013. Similarly in the update Wikipedia entry which appears to have been well researched. I shall be delighted if both sources turn out to have been inaccurate and AH right!

The St Austell brewery sponsorship is said to be the largest in the club's history. On other beer ?Exmoor will still be available but no mention of Thatchers.

Where do we sit in the cider consumption table? I feel Tractor's special efforts should be recognised.
Are we to assume that it will be Tribute on draught this coming season? Could be a lot worse.

What did the plans, which were shown of the new pavilion, indicate that it will comprise of?
One assumes that the hotel, which was being talked about a few years ago, has been banished to the recycling bin, but do we yet know whether the new building will consist of another pavilion for players?
I assume that there will be seating for spectators and larger media facilities, but are any more flats, or business premises, designed to be incorporated into the new building?
I imagine, that within the new development, there will be some means whereby the club can generate additional income from non – match day events.

One assumes that the hotel, which was being talked about a few years ago, has been banished to the recycling bin, but do we yet know whether the new building will consist of another pavilion for players?
I assume that there will be seating for spectators and larger media facilities, but are any more flats, or business premises, designed to be incorporated into the new building?
I imagine, that within the new development, there will be some means whereby the club can generate additional income from non – match day events.
One of the biggest concerns raised by a questioner was " How to avoid a white elephant like the Ian Botham stand with half the seats unusable due to the sightscreen!"
The CEO said they were working on it, but hadn't found an answer yet!

The feasibility designs foresee a large café & bar/bistro on the ground floor with high quality executive suites and corporate facilities on the first floor. The second floor will host a new media centre along with tiered seating, a roof top garden and bar facilities. [www.somersetcountycc.co.uk]

Further on the ground development - Andy Nash at one point mentioned, almost as a by-the-way, that after the final phase of the ground development had been completed it would take no more than another £100,000 to complete any other works needed to gain International Cricket status.
Funds for the development 'in the bank' consisted of the grant from ECB (which has arrived) plus about £250,00 other funds. As said elsewhere the TDBC loan is of a £1m at 4% and I gained the impression the loan period was possibly open-ended! What was not said wa how much the development was likely to cost on present designs!
Alex Tetley, treasurer who is standing down this year stated that the level of debt the club was carrying was relatively low (to other clubs) and is therefore easily manageable.
The quick bowlers are off to Potchefstroom for a week or so to get in some good overs outside. This is a reaction to injuries suffered by them last season as they went in to the season undercooked!

Just had a quick look at the new SCCC website and at the foot it is stated that Tribute is the club Title partner and Thatchers is listed as the Cider partner.
So hopefully all will still be well in Tractor's world!!

I have heard from someone who is normally fairly reliable with info about the club. His info is that Alf has signed a final 3 year contract starting this year and will not be playing IPL!
It could be complete rubbish as some of these sort of things are, but it does make a lot of sense building around all the other stories. And of course, if Alf thought he was going to be used in the IPL like last time, he might have decided on the proverbial two finger sign, thinking that 3 guaranteed years with Somerset was a better deal.

Tend to agree.
Alf has put in sterling service for us, but if we have agreed to a three year deal, I reckon that's a trifle risky on our part.
Still, I seem to recall thinkng much the same when a certain A R Caddick was given a four year deal, so let's hope Alf can indeed turn in the goods for the duration.

Yes, Grockle, strongly suspect that we may have offered Alf one year more than we might have considered ideal in order to get him to turn his back on the IPL.
Hopefully the agreement is that Alf will never again play in it.

Very true Grizz and Andy didn't make it to the end of his, finishing in a way that didn't honour him as his service deserved.
Ben Phillips also got too long and possibly even Charl though that wasn't with us.

Addendum re Alf; Assuming he has a contract for Pune 2013, which the sources mentioned in my last post seem to imply is the case, I have been wondering how he could end up playing for us at the start of the season. There does seem to be a loophole.
Looking at versions of the IPL rules it seems that Pune Warriors currently have more than the prescribed number of foreign (i.e. non Indian) players in their 2013 squad. So it could be that Alf is released. Live in hope...

I think if you read the rest of the stuff on the Alf/Pune situation you would find there are a number of ways that his contract can be neutralised.

The way The Aussies are playing at the moment I'm sure they'd be pleased if we fielded an understrength side.
I expect the club are hoping the visitors raise their playing standards as they wouldn't want to lose out on revenue if the game was over in two days.

Andy obviously couldn't give a direct answer being so long away from the game so he did what I expected and waffled around the question without committing himself one way or the other.
