The skipper return to T20 at a pretty important time for the county. Crowds are snaking around the ground, the sun is beating down and Essex are here to stop us going to another Finals day at the SWALEC. Levi, Morkel and Dockrell are all named and we are on our way in about an hour.
There is not going to be an empty seat in this place this afternoon if the queues outside with an hour to go have anything to do with it. At 3:00 the place is over half full and expectations after the run filled weekend are pretty high. However, Essex are not going to 'go quietly' I would suggest so we need to be on top of our short game fromthe first ball whether we chase or set a target.
The side as listed is;
Levi, Trescothick (mouth starts to salivate), Kieswetter (who may be classed as 'in form'), Buttler, Hildreth, Morkel, Trego, Thomas, Dockrell, Waller, Suppiah with Compton as Twelfth Man.
I don't personally see many changes to that and it is good to see both spinners earning their place - possibly the only surprise is the inclusion of Arul instead of going for the pacier Craig Meschede but as it has been warm and dry all weekend and we have spin variation Rosey may have plans up his sleeve. There is time for changes.
The Essex list does not include Bopara or Cook but I expect that to change when the toss and teams are announced. Haven't seen them about the place but not everyone is out at the moment.
Essex won the toss and will field. It looks like - Craig Kieswetter will open with Richard Levi with Marcus coming in third. Arul will not play and Lewis Gregory is preferred - pace has a little more importance then - I am personally surprised it wasn't Meschede myself.
The Essex side, obviously bears little resemblence to the side published.
Big drink queues already - biggest crowd of the season.
And what do they see first off? Levi and Kieswetter stride out and we are talking about Richard's 'long handle' method that works or doesn't. Craig faces ball one and proceeds to try and hit Phillips into the Tone. He merely manages to give Cook early catching practice in front of the CA and gets us off to the oposite of a flyer by wandering back for no score after ONE ball. Can't say it was totally unpredicatable but unfortunate all the same. Marcus fills the gap ad sees out the first order in more sensible style.
Napier takes the second over and sees the Somerset skipper spank his second and third ball to the Caddyshack. By the end of the third 'normal service' has been restored and The Boss is looking the part and Mr Levi is in 'long handle' mode and we are 29 for 1. Masters takes the fourth after Taylor has continued his spell.
As Topley is introduced, it takes a piece of excellent individual fielding to change the nature of the first few overs. After cutting the Essex man's first to the Ondaatje boundary, Marcus looks to do something similar to the next and courtesy of a full length and excellently judged catch from Napier is sent back to the pavilion for 19. 39 for 2 after 4.2 overs. Jos Buttler is the next man in and helps us to 49 after 5.
The 50 comes off a sort of punched lob to the electronic scoreboard bondary but halfway through the 7th, Levi misjudges the slow one and is caught behind by Foster. 56 for 3 after 39 balls and Hildreth joins Buttler at the crease to build something - hopefully. By the time Bopara is introduced for the tenth the two men have moved the score on to 78 and there are a couple of especially good sweeps from number 25.
Ravi goes for 9, courtesy of 2 Jos boundaries. 89 for 3 at the halfway stage but Topley, who takes the eleventh breaks up the partnership as Buttler plonks one in Cook's hands at 92 and brings Albie Morkel to the crease. Ten Doeschate takes the twelfth and it ends with a plopped up slow ball that misses everyone and 99 on the board.
Franklin takes the thirteenth and Somerset take the score to 100 with a single off the first ball. Then, courtesy of a couple of pulled boundaries from JH we end it on 'Nelson' and it could have been more if Albie had swung and hit some loose stuff rather than getting only air. That is the story of his innings really. He isn't quite there, hasn't quite got his eye in and is getting lucky outside edges and snicks. In the end he skies one towards the Gimblett but it doesn't have the legs and he departs for 8 at 118 on the last ball of the fourteenth. 118 for 5 brings a bit of a surprise as Gregory comes to the crease before Pete Trego with 6 overs to go.
A debate ensues - not surprisingly - as to why Peter is not in there with 5 overs to go - surely you use your big hitters in the last 30 balls irrespective of form. If he fails what have you lost? Not sure about that at all personally.
James however gets on with his job and courtesy of three consecutive boundaries brings up a 32 ball 50 wth 9 fours to end the 17th at 146. He steals the strike and continues into the next over with 2 more to take Somerset to 156. However a poorly judged two means we see the end of him run out by Phillips at that score with 17.4 overs gone. 58 from 36 balls has got us moving again and Pete is in next to face Bopara. He's off the mark immediately and the batsmen take the score to 159 with 12 balls to go.
Topley takes the 19th to Gregory who gets his partner on strike with a single. Pete returns the favour followed by a leg bye to get him back in front of the bowler. He skies the next and runs two before it bounces and a leading edge gets him off strike - looking out of sorts and possibly the reason for his demotion. A well run two keeps PT on strike.
Napier takes the twentieth from the OP with 167 to be added to. Big shot only brings 1 off the first. Lewis fools the keeper and flips the second for 4. An attempted silly shot means no run off the third... you do despair sometimes Lewis is also almost run out trying to find his footing after the attempted spin. A two is turned down by Trego on the next - he's gonna look to put this away. Napier sees this and fires one in at the toes and they scamble a single. The last ball is a yorker and Gregory looks to flip another, fails, pads it and takes a single. 175 for 6.
Well it's a total but it didn't look too convincing against the Essex attack. I think they are 15 or 20 short. They have to bowl very very well to defend this!!
The Reply
Albie opens from the River and nearly has Pettini with his fourth ball but the umpire decides that it snicked his thigh pad. They take 5 off the over. Alf comes in to Cook at the start of the second and the England man looks to be the stable part of the innings by looking to rotate the strike Pettini isn't as stable and tries to six one that he gets too high up the bat, George takes the catch running backwards and it is 9 for 1 after 2. In comes Bopara.
Pete takes over number 3 and Bopara chips the second ball of it straight into the grateful buckets that Albie calls hands. The score stays the same, the wickets down doubles!! Shah joins Cook but the allrounder keeps the Essex men to 11. Gregory takes the fourth and after a couple of 'sighters', Shah puts him into the scoreboard stand, though Buttler gets a hand to it as it passes the rope. I'm not sure how he would have landed had he held on. The next one goes for a straight four to the OP but Lewis comes back and they end the over at 23. Shah isn't so destructive at the start of the 5th, he tries to straight six Albie and finds George waiting to take the catch. Franklin comes in to join the becalmed Cook at 23 for 3.
After 5 Cook still looks becalmed and Franklin hasn't had the chance to worry the scorers over much because Cook manages a paltry single off the last ball and pinches the strike. 24 for 3 and the rate needed is over 10.
Trescothick is rotating his bowlers on an over by over basis. Alf takes the sixth, Max takes the seventh and Pete takes the eigth when there is a close run out decision on Franklin coming back for a second to the River on a Gregory throw. After a long TV look the decision is 'Out' and Franklin goes with one ball left of the eigth. In comes Foster to 'rock and hard place' territory. 43 for 4 after eight. Peter has bowled 2 overs for 6 and removed 2 Essex men.
Max is still on at the River for over 9 and the outfielders are keeping the Essex men down to doubles rather than boundaries but they do pass the 50 wth the 5th ball and it is 53 after nine. The Boss also keeps Trego on at the OP and he sends Cook on his way with a gloved high ball well taken by Levi - moving and catching at the same time. 53 for 5 and not even halfway yet. Ten Doeschate arrives and you have to think that with him comes Essex's final hope of getting anywhere near the winning total.
After 10 Essex are 56 for 5 needing 120 to win off half that number of balls and into the attack comes George Dockrell. However, that Ten Doeschate bloke is not willing to capitulate just like that and he takes the Irishman for 14. Pete is then also taken for more that expected and it is 84 by the start of the 13th. (PT 2 for 23). But MT stays with Dockrell and he C&B's Foster with his first of the 13th. Just a misjudged ball tha plops ito the hands of the diving Georgie boy!
The young spinner then has Napier in all kinds of trouble for most of the rest of the over, her finally gets off strike with one ball to go and finishes going for 1 and taking another wicket!!
Lewis takes the 14th and sprays one either side for boundaries before getting Napier to put one into orbit for no apparent reason to be caught by The Boss. Phillips comes to try and keep some momentum going and get Ten Doeschate on strike. The bowling is not awe inspiring I have to say but they do sem to be finding ways to get the Essex men to play shots that aren't there. Even if they do get it to the boundary there is some really good fieldwork taking place, especially from the likes of Max Waller on the Somerset Stand boundary. Essex reach 99 at the end of the 14th.
Albie returns for the 15th from the River as George gets some very generous applause as he arrives to field in front of the Supporters Stand. The 100 arrives halfway through the over and they reach the three quarter stage at 107. Still in this but with a very very big ask. It isn't helped when Gregory gets phillips to tee one up straight to the safe hands of Jos Buttler at deep mid off 112 for 8 is not what Foster would have wanted at all. Masters comes to see if he can help pull off a real victory. Masters guides one out towards the Trescothick Stand and is nearly caught first ball. He tries to bounce the Essex man again and is straight sixed for his troubles. A single off the last one leaves the visitors needing 50 odd off 24 balls at 120 for 8.
With 12 balls to go however it is 147 for 8 as Thommo goes for 20 mostly to the bat of Ten Doeschate. Gregory is chosen to bowl to Masters with 29 needed. Lots of worry... and then he fires out Masters leg stump - yorker and a cartwheeling stump 147 for 9 but Ten Doeschate is still in there.
Topley gets up the other end with a scrambled single as Craig misses the stumps. Lewis gives him a full one, 'TD' goes for it and Max waits and then catches. Somerset win by 27 runs - but it was much closer than we all wanted it to be.
Cardiff here we come for the fourth consecutive Finals Day. Good game. Good win. Hard luck Ten D but you weren't as good as James Hildreth.

I don't have the start times for the other matches yet assume Yorks is early start on Wed - I was wrong they don't have permanent floodlights at Headingley
Tres has already stated on Sky that he is targetting the 2nd XI fixture away to Essex as his come-back next week. So at least he will have a proper fitness test and if he gets a big score and comes through unscathed, then we should definitely play him.
Sadly, I shall miss the match as I shall be playing for Taunton Bridge Club in a national semi-final that day.

I think that a four day would probably be better all-round for a return because, unless things go very badly indeed for us with the ball, there is almost always a case for having a man who stands at slip rather than having to field anywhere else and chase balls around the outfield. Also no express need for quick singles whereas it's tough to win one-day games whilst eschewing them?
If we lose the Essex 2nd XI game to the weather, then it might make more sense to wait for the next second XI game (assuming it isn't a long time away.)
Quarter comes day after 1st test finishes.
Assuming Albie is not in test match team then Brian is hopeful SA will release him to play for us, fingers crossed.....
1st and 2nd tests aren't back-to-back matches, there is a 9 day gap between them. There is howeer a tour match for South Africa at Worcester, another of these two-day frolics on the Thurs/Fri of T20 quarters week.
Levi has been playing for SA 'A', they are releasing him to play Tuesday so he will have had cricket.
Tres said at start of season he would happily let Kieswetter open with Gayle.
I expect him to stick with this policy and open with Levi+Craig and Tres can bat at 3.
With Jos, Hildy, Morkel and Trego that really is some top 7 in my opinion.
Guess Kirby unlikely now as he didnt make team today, so that to me leaves straight fight between Lewis and Mesch for number 8 spot, with Alfie, Max and George very likely to be 9, 10, 11.
Forecast looks great, tickets are almost sold out now so we just need to perform now, roll on Tuesday.....
well lets hope Somerset care cos if they don't and get it wrong then Essex are too good a team not to take advantage. Should make for a cracking game though.
I reckon they'll be a few disappointed fans, if they wait until the match to buy tickets, as this wonderful weather will entice a lot of undecided fans, who didn't want to risk a soaking.
Gutted that I will miss this due to baby-sitting requirements to cover a spousal tennis match in the heart of Essex (Theydon Bois) - however will be cheering Somerset on against my Essex mates.
Is it a sell out? A few Essex boys still thinking of coming down.
Conspiracy theories rampant on TMS at lunchtime about the decision of Andy Flower to release Cook and Bopara to play for this old county at Taunton tomorrow, but bar Bresnan from playing for Yorkshire and Broad and Swann for Notts.
TMS should become a Grockles contributor. There`s nothing we like more here than a good conspiracy theory.
cricketjerry-mouse Essex, who travelled down to Taunton last night, will give a late fitness test tomorrow to Owis Shah, who has a calf injury.
He is named in a squad of 14, which also includes captain James Foster, who has missed the last two matches for personal reasons.
Squad: Foster (c.), Pettini, Cook, Bopara, Franklin, Shah, ten Doeschate, Napier, Smith, Phillips, Masters, Topley, Mills and Wheater.
There's a lot of potential hitting power in that line-up with Foster, Bopara, Shah, Franklin, Ten Doeschate, Napier and Wheater.
Three southpaw bowlers in that squad for them. I would assume that Pettini, Smith and Mills would be omitted from the XI? That's assuming that Shah is fit.
I have just been over and had a look at what is going on, Essex are out on the outfield practicing, I believe Somerset were out this morning.
What is surprising there is no extra seating/stand for this match, does that mean the ticket sales are not as good as I thought they would be, I expect it will be full with only the normal seating available.
Interesting piece on cricinfo just now, saying Cricket South Africa aproached Alfonso Thomas six weeks ago and asked him to make himself available for their squad for the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka this September.
After two days thought, he reluctantly turned them down as he felt he was too old. If he had said yes, of course, it would have immediately classified him as an overseas player for Somerset.

Thank God for that. Yet another player becoming unavailable to us would have been the last thing we needed.
Squad is as i had hoped but not what i'd expected.
Compton has been left out!
So the 13 are yesterdays 11 less Compo, plus Levi and Morkel.
I'd guess Arul will miss out and then fight for final spot between Gregory/Meschede.
Will give us 6 bowlers, Tregs, Alfie, Albe, Lewis/Mesch, George and Max.
I am admittedly bias but our top 7 really does look awesome "on paper", so much potential it's frightening, just need them to take responsibility and not leave it to each other...
Sky's very large big screen lorry has been parked outside the ground for ages, there doesn't seem to be anyone to see the driver get into the ground with the narrow entrance.
I started typing this and the driver had an attempt at getting in the entrance without any help he gave up and is now parked along the street again.
Have to agree about the releases. If you release one player to take part in quarter finals you must release them all. You can't pick and choose and give any semblence of being fair and neutral.
On what basis is Bopara allowed to play but Bresnan is not where is the reasoning? 4 overs is not going to change any bowler's level of readiness for an international series and if Bopara is there for his batting then a bit of batting practice should he be needed for Tim is neither here nor there.
The English management has to sort this out or be continually accused of unbalancing the domestic competitions unfairly.

I know you've heard it before, but do away with central contracts!!
They are claimed to be the reason why we are number one!!
SO they should also be blamed for SA being 600+ for 2!!
I'm stuck in the depths of the Forest of Bowland in a rather splendid hotel that doesn't have Sky Sports. Are we having a commentary tonight?By the way,in optimistic mood I was sussing out hotel rooms in Cardiff for finals day and there doesn't seem to be one to be had anywhere.
Ground full, or nearly with 40 minutes to go. Blisteringly hot and tension is pretty high. Seen Bopara floating about the place... not seen Cook but I'm sure he is here.
Commentary and TV all over the place. Two groups of radio men in the 'shed' and we have Radio Somerset tonight as Radio Bristol will be with their favourite boys at another ground.
I can update online tonight so I'll keep people on track.
Craig leaves brain in dressing room and looks to put Phillips into the Tone ball one. He skies it straight to Alistair Cook and walks off under the balefull glare of Mr Rose!!
Totally witless!!
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2012:07:24:16:34:15 by Grockle.
Brilliant divning catch from Napier does for the skipper 39 for 2 after 4.2 overs. Jos in and nearly out first ball!! The wind is not set particularly fair on Somerset's innings.
Not looking great here. Probably need to 'settle,' here and at least make sure that we bat out the overs - trying to get 155 or so as something to bowl at.
Our scoring rate is fine at the moment but I fear we may have lost too many wickets. What we need now is a mighty cameo at the end from Pete and then superb bowling
The problem is the outfield is fast, their spinner has not turned it at all and only two balls all innings have gripped and moved off the seam (one each for Masters and Topley.)
I've seen no hint of the ball coming slowly off the track, either.
So I think we'll need to bowl like demons here against a strong batting line-up in ideal batting conditions.
The Radio 5 commentators suggest that 190 was par. Not knowing the pitch today I reckoned-looking at the Essex batting- that anything under 170 was trouble, so I reckon that its now down to Max and George.
Somerset are going to be charged 6 penalty runs for not completing in time. Wonder if they took the run out decision time off the total before they worked this one out. 6 runs less to get and the second time this has happened?
Someone give me a reason not to be back in Oman for faculty training on Saturday the 25th please. Has to be totally believable and based on no-one seeing me at the game itself.
Electronic suggestion box will be available.
Good win though it got a little close to the end.
Well done boys.

Thanks to the excellent BBC Bristol commentators and the wonders of modern technology, I was able to follow the match in my hotel in deepest Africa. It sounds as if some of our key players came to the fore just when we needed them to do so.

I think all your students in Oman should be offered a field trip to Cardiff (Easy Jet got any cheap returns??). They can either watch the cricket or search for the lesser spotted blackbird which (you can tell them) sometimes hides in the Welsh marshes in August!! Does that sound feasible?
Somerset will need to rethink their side somewhat for finals day in Cardiff on August 25.
Craig Kieswetter and Albie Morkel will be playing for England and South Africa in an ODI on the same ground the previous day, and as there will still be five ODIs between the sides to go, I don`t see either management releasing them. We`ll just have to hope Jos Buttler is not in the England ODI squad as well.
Meanwhile, George Dockrell will also be away, captaining Ireland in the Under-19 World Cup in Australia.
So it looks like there will be opportunities for the likes of Arul Suppiah, Nick Compton, Steve Kirby and Craig Meschede.

Do you keep any aces up your sleeve??
A great double today as Taunton Bridge Club have reached, we believe, their first ever national finals. Hopefully the final will not clash with Cardiff
I emailed Sky to ask why 5.5 minutes had been added to their finish time, but heard nothing. I cannot think of the ball being lost or anything, so why add time on?
@Grockle: Grandmother's funeral. Never fails.
(Just ask Runako Morton).
@Roger: Bravo Taunton Bridge Club, and looking forward to crossing swords (?clubs) with you at Exchange House one of these Thursdays.
@ everyone: Yes!!!
Botham, there was an interesting bit where you could hear the umpire talking to (presumably) James Foster about time on the stump mic. Was just after a fall of Hildy's wicket.
I distinctly heard the umpire say "two minutes for the review (run out) and 1 minute for the wicket".
Presumably the first x number of wickets don't grant you extra time, but above a certain number does. And clearly a fielding team shouldn't be penalised for a TV umpire taking forever.

I'd guess Buttler will be in the squad. Wonder if Brian will be able to try to sign yet another overseas player to cover Morkel?
Would think Sussex would be at full-strength.
Notts, if they make it, may be minus Patel and/or Hales in addition to Broad and Swann.
Yorks would probably be minus Bairstow as well as Bresnan.
Worcs would be at full-strength and ditto, I think, Hants.
I'm pretty sure as its finals day they will be released. If they can release bopara and cook the day after a test they can both do this. Dockers for me may be then the only one and that depends on how Ireland get on in Australia
What a great day yesterday. I was fully behind Bopara & Cook playing, & I think the domestic shcedule should be such that England players are always released for key county games, as you need the stars to keep people coming through the turnstiles & getting kids interested. Look how exciting it was for kids to see Cook playing yesterday. It seems daft that clubs are paying top dollar for foreign players when their own top players aren't allowed to play. That said, I'm surprised England felt that the solution for Bopara to learn to build a test innings was a 20/20 thrash.
Don't think we can underestimate the efforts of some fringe players. I was a bit worried when Gregory was given the penaultimate over, but wow....... Also, he may not have starred with the ball, but Waller was fantastic in the field, one stop to prevent a boundary was stunning. Regardless of his CC form/chances, is it conceivable that he could get into England's 20/20 side one day?
3.5 In order to be eligible to represent a County in a match
in the Finals Stage of the Friends Life t20 and/or the
Finals Stage of the Clydesdale Bank 40 an Unqualified
Cricketer must have been:
(a) registered by that County and played in at least one
match for that County in the Group Stages of the
relevant Competition; and/or
(b) registered by that County and named in that County’s
squad for an abandoned match in the Group Stages of
the relevant Competition; and/or
(c) registered by that County for a match in the Group
Stages of the relevant Competition and obtained a
medical certificate to confirm that he was unfit to play
in that match.
Unfortunately, rs, George Dockrell won`t be available however well or otherwise Ireland do in the Under-19 World Cup.
For those countries that don`t get through the group stage proper into the knock-out stage, are then put together in a sort of `second prize` competition to run alongside the premier knock-out matches.
The idea is to give plenty of experience - and cricket - to young players who have travelled many thousands of miles to appear in the World Cup.

The only thing which could change is if Andy Flower decided he was so talented that he wanted him on board the 'English Ship' to replace the rapidly ageing Graham Swann! If that happened, of course, it still might not do us any good in Somerset!.
Talk from Mike Selvey, in today's Guardian, that due to his elbow injury;
"It might be a long time after this current series before Swann plays Test cricket again, including missing the tour to India."
But if they do manage to persuade George to qualify for them, then I believe George would have to serve a qualifying period of two years or so ... so at least that would give us a couple of years of being able to use him as we wish.
And that signing was a total waste of Essex's money I seem to remember. I think they changed the rule because of that. Now dn't players have to have played in the league stage to be able to play in the Finals?
Anyone struggling for hotels in Cardiff for Finals weekend suggest you try Newport its only 15-20 mins on train into Cardiff or easy drive using park and ride (which was very efficient for Ashes test 3yrs ago, cant comment on recent experience). Only problem with train is last one back at 10pm so if waiting till the end of final would need to get taxi back. But still cheaper than the few rooms left in Cardiff! Have seen Etap just off M4 Newport for £55
However much you think Rose will put pressure on George it is very very unlikely that the man chosen as the captain of a side for a tournament would be allowed to leave his duties to come back for a Finals Day.
He's there to show his ability to make difficult and astute decisions and requesting leave to come and play for a county would not necessarily be seen as one such.
Speculate all you like about what he might do. He's captain of Ireland U19 and it is highly doubtful that the skipper will come home early irrespective of how his country do and how pointless YOU see the tornament being.
Going back to this photo did you notice the sad look on the girls face in the back ground knowing Craig Kieswetter was going to be caught off the first ball.
The structure of the u19 tournament is such that all teams will be involved until at least 23rd August. Can't see George making it back from Australia, even if Ireland are in the 15th or 13th place play offs. He could 'do a Gareth Bale' I guess
Play-off finals
15th place play-off

13th place play-off
23 August v Peter Burge Oval, Redland City, Australia
11th place play-off
24 August v University of Queensland, WEP Harris Oval, St Lucia, Australia
Plate final
24 August v Allan Border Field, Brisbane, Australia
7th place play-off
24 August v Endeavour Park 2, Townsville, Australia
5th place play-off
24 August v Endeavour Park 1, Townsville, Australia
3rd place play-off
25 August v Endeavour Park 1, Townsville, Australia
Gotta say I think there are four strong teaams in the semi-finals. Previous years I think one or two have seemed weaker than others, but I reckon they're all pretty useful this year.
Interesting that Hampshire needed a runner in the last over to win!!! McKenzie will probably be missing on Aug 25th. Regarding order... Hants have to travel from Leicester so will probably be the second game. Two travel from Taunton and Yorks are free for 2 days.
There are no easy games in semi finals so didnt really matter who we drew.
Had/have to beat 2 of the other 3 on the day to win the trophy so that's what we need to do.
I am bias but we are in my opinion the best team "on paper" out of the 4, our potential in the top 7 batters is frightening.
Anyway, month away yet, need to keep up the top in the red ball stuff and try and avoid Tres or Kirby having any relapses over the coming weeks....
I for one won't be speculating as to the team over the next month but you can be sure that BR will be working on it. He will be in need of a good rest at the end if the season or is the planning for next year just automatically start.
Oddly we are the 2.30 semi final, as a supporter i like the chance to get into the day but based on recent experience and fact we get a small break only before the final i think i'd have preferred the first game, anyway, we have to win 2 games to win this thing whenever they are
