Back to the Roaring 40's

In or Out?
By Grockle et al
August 11 2013

We welcome the Bristolians back to the County Ground to resume the 40 over campaign after a long lay off.  The Somerset side will be at fulll strength but the format of that side is still a matter for debate as Marcus will return and the middle order has to find places for Nick Compton, Alviro Petersen and James Hildreth.  The lattter missed out in the T20 Quarter Final...will he do so again.  Chris Jones is the payer who misses out in the squad according to early reports.

v Gloucestershire YB40 @ TAUNTON Sunday 11 August 2013

Scorcard

Commentary

The weather is set fair for today's game and a victory is a must have for a side looking at a long fight to make something out of a disapppointing seasoon and prepare us for staying a first class Chhammpioonship side in 2014.  Marcus Trescothick will return to the captain's wheel and he has a squad of 15 to pick from.

His most likely side will consist of

Craig Kieswetter, Jos Buttler, Alviro Petersen, Peter Trego, a perm from James Hildreth and Nick Compton, one of George Dockrell and Max Waller (or both?), Afonso Thomas, Craig Meschede, Steve Kirby and or Jamie Overton

There are others who may be part of this make-up but those names will be foating about the 11 man team sheet.

YB40 starts again against Gloucester on Sunday

Lets turn our attention to Sunday the YB40 against Gloucester.

I had to look at the tables to remind me of the situation of the competition, we need to win this match on Sunday, Gloucester have a game in-hand and on the same points has us, a win will give us a cushion knowing Gloucester can only draw level on points if they win their game in-hand.

It is a tight group on points we must keep winning.

I think Marcus will return if he is able!

In all honesty, Gloucestershire are not all that good and I think it would be poor if we don't manage to beat them.

You don't beat your opponents, you don't win the competition. Somerset need wins in everything for all kinds of reasons.

We need to win 8 cricket matches between now and the end of the season to win 40 over comp and avoid relegation will be tough.

8 matches, WCG?

How many games do you have Surrey/Derbyshire winning between now and the end of the season?

Happy Birthday for Sunday Norwich, an honour you share with my daughter. Which is why I won't be there and will have to wait until Thursday for my last live cricket fix of this summer.

Not grouse shooting then to celebrate.....

Glamorgan have included former England fast bowler Simon Jones in their squad of 12 for the YB40 floodlit match at Cardiff on Monday (start 4.40pm).

Squad: Rees, Wallace, Cooke, North, Allenby, Goodwin, Wright, Cosker, Hogan, S. Jones, A. Jones and Slater.

Between 2006 and, say, 2010, Goodwin may well have ranked second only to Marcus as most effective proper batsman on the circuit?

Depends where Marcus plays and the fact that Nick will.

It means Chris will have to wait until Compo and Jos make their decisions before he sorts out where he plays in the new setup.

This was one of our earlier teams when Petersen played.

Trescothick, Trego, Suppiah, Petersen. Hildreth, Buttler, Gregory, Meschede, Thomas, Kirby and Waller.

Not playing tomorrow Suppiah and I presume Gregory.

So who is in?

Jamie Overton and Compton perhaps.

With improved recent second XI form then maybe we should be looking to re-intergrate Lewis Gregory into our one-day side?

With Jamie Overton to miss Edgbaston then it might be prudent to not over-use Alf/Kirby in the run-up to Aug 20 as they may have a LOT of bowling to do.

By the same token that might mean that Adam Dibble should get a Pro 40 game this week as we will need somebody to take Jamie's place at Edgbaston and I'm not sure that we'll want to pick Hussain?

I think I'd consider playing something like;

Trego
CK
Compton (still trying to keep him sweet)
Jos
Petersen
Hildreth
Meschede
Gregory
Thomas or Kirby
Waller or Dockrell
Dibble

15 man squad- Marcus Trescothick (capt), Jos Buttler, Nick Compton, Adam Dibble, George Dockrell, Lewis Gregory, James Hildreth, Craig Kieswetter, Steve Kirby, Craig Meschede, Jamie Overton, Alviro Petersen, Alfonso Thomas, Pete Trego and Max Waller.

No Jones.

Would guess that Nick, Adam, George and Lewis miss out.

If things don't go to plan good chance Adam and Lewis will get some chances in last 2 or 3.

I think out of the squad named- and OB's tongue in cheek notwithstanding my 11 would be

Trescothick
Trego
Kieswetter
Buttler
Hildreth
Compton
Meschede
Thomas
Dockrell
Waller
Overton
but I bet it won't be.

Not disagreeing with the team Geordie but if that's the batting order you've got them in I wouldn't see much point in Compton at 6. I'd let him open and set out to bat through and let the rest go for it. Maybe that's what Marcus needs just to go for his shots!!!

Re: YB40 starts again against Gloucester on Sunday
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)

I wouldn't pick Tresco, personally.

We'll gain nothing if he's out cheaply early on. And in a one-day game you don't want somebody scratching around for half an hour. It's very difficult to believe that he'll be able to instantly turn it on.

I believe we should open with Pete and CK. if Tres plays then one of those two will not be opening which I think is a mistake (for all of the fantasies on here about Banger moving down the order there's no evidence that he is considering it).

The CC game is different. If Tres scratches around in that then provided he comes through and makes some runs then fine.

Could we hazard a guess about the difference between Gemaal's and Alviro's daily pay?? 400-500%?? I don't really have a clue but I reckon it would be something like that?

Of course, you do appreciate that I agree with you, and would pick Nick before Alviro!

Marcus will play. This is a unit he has been successful with and he'll return to it. The more interesting question is WHERE in the line-up will he stand.

Chris Jones seems fine, at least he was when I talked to him yesterday in Taunton. He seems happy to wait his time. He has signed a year's contract - he's one cricketer who can probably earn more money outside the game at his age than in it - sensibly keeping his options open and seeing how 2014 pans out when all the stuff is sorted at the end of this season. But flaming hell has he increased in size in the last three and a half years!!

As we have said for a considerable time but probably with less seriousness than now. This has to be where the road back to confidence and winning ways has to start.

IMO we tend to underestimate the amount men (and probably women) grow and fill out until their early to mid twenties. I guess this is the reason why there are strict rules on how much bowling young quickies particularly are allowed to bowl in first class cricket. It probably explains why there is always the danger of aches and pain and sometimes stress related fractures in the growing bodies of some young cricketers.

old boy!: I am sure that when I saw you at Taunton a few days ago you were distinctly bigger than when we met at Horsham earlier in the summer. With a winter in the gym or a stint in the Big Bash, I reckon you'll be a fine unit at the start of next season, all set to challenge the combined Overteenies for a place in the side.

Well done Mr CK, well done Mr Kirby is that 'poor in most department's' first half of the game and this one looks pretty much ours with 9 overs to go and 30-ish required (sorry by the time I got to this and posted) 4 needed off 7 overs.

122 off 96 - which wicketkeeper batsman should be considered to go to Australia as Prior's backup?

Excellent win boys and girls - nearly took the edge off the bill from 'Fifteen' for lunch..... one down 7 more to go.

I'm struggling to see the benefit of playing both Alviro and Nick at the expense of James in one dayers but as some have alluded it probably has more to do with Nick's future than any issue with Hilda's form

AP is a huge disappointment for an OP.

Great batting taking Gloucs attack apart, Kieso twice cleared OP.

Had an off day in the field apart from Max, but the 2nd half was really exciting.

Unfortunately with Thursday's game starting at 13.45 and me finishing work at 5, I'll be playing bridge instead, but hopefully they'll be a few holiday-makers to boost the crowd.

Nice to speak with Tractor and Tex.

I'll take your place Botham as I couldn't be there today and I don't play bridge.

Shame we didn't capitalise on AP when he did provide an 'OP's contribution at the start of the season. H ehas to wonder what format and what team he is playing for in which country so real criticism of him is probably partly unfounded - though we didn't really pick him as a one day player I don't think. Play James instead and let Alviro rest.

Ref Hildreth - does anyone actually know if he is really unaware of the reasons for his omission? How do we know this is not with his agreement?

It should be noted that Kirby bowled two successive bowls for 4 wides at the end of their innings.

Re: Back to the Roaring 40's

Tres looked back to his best to me, some thumping shots in that innings, 2 bits of luck with inside edges but really looked good to me and took good catch to get rid of him.
Trego too was excellent on the back of a great start.

Kiesy was just outstanding, great to see how he has matured, he id really cashing in on this great bit of form, to see it home shows huge promise.

Bowling was ordinary and fielding really not up to its normal standard at all bar Max.

Saying that though it really was not a fair contest, we are just in a different league to that lot. I'm not sure 1 of their team would get in ours, maybe Klinger but even then not in the top 3!

Huge game tomorrow now, we always seem to struggle at that place, maybe an idea for 2 spinners? Can't count Peterson as a serious option in my opinion. Who for? Maybe Jove, he struggled today, almost too quick, his pace helps batters score off him.

The opposition Grizzly, they were very poor.
Without Klinger we could have been done by 5pm.

These are the types of teams we face joining if we don't sort things out in the championship.

The smaller counties like Glos, Glam, Worcs, Leics, Kent don't have the budgets/squads to compete with the big boys.

Steve Kirby had a bad time today with some of his overs, Marcus had to have a word with him at one point, in saying that he also bowled some good balls especially this one to Michael Klinger he just kept it out.

Yep agree, currently we should be in a far better position than those we "may" join, but it is a worry.

IF we were to lose Jos+Nick, then we have to be realistic that we would struggle to attract any similar level replacements.

I'd like to think we would be right up there next year if we were to go down.
I think Kirny, Alfie and Jove would look far more dangerous against a lower standard opposition as there really is a difference in standard between divs 1+2.

Mr Hussain is perhaps a good example

We have already have possible replacements WSM. Chris Jones and Craig Meschede (though he bowls instead of keeps - good job really). We need an Arul Suppiah replacement WSM (could be Lewis but I'm not convinced I have to say or Alex with the same lack of confidence)

Great win well led by Marcus. It appeared to me as if he had decided that he was going to attack every ball bowled to him. A sort of innings which was without fear, or I just want to get a lot of frustration out of my system. A few dot balls where the ball was well fielded, including the hardest drive I've ever seen him make to mid off where Klinger stopped brilliantly and saved any runs. Of the 28 balls Marcus faced, there were 7 fours and most of the rest were singles because he was hitting the ball so hard to the fielders. I do not remember even one defensive shot. Great entertainment, and lets hope he has turned the corner.

My main point is Mike - did you see him block one ball, as opposed to Craig who deadbatted many? And the ball that Klinger fielded at Mid Off very near to your position was a brilliant piece of cricket.

Mr G you have an in built preference for Chris Jones.
Nothing wrong with that, you seem to know him quite well and I understand you taught him so naturally you have some affiliation. For both Lewis and Alex, I don't believe you have the same connection but are willing to speculate on their mental capacity (confidence) from the side lines. From what I have seen of both, they are highly talented cricketers, with a great work ethic and are determined to make a success of their fledgling county cricket careers. Not only that, I'm sure they want to build on their International recognition, both being England U19 players. They are a year younger than Chris, still finding their way in first class cricket as are all our young recruits. In my opinion, we have a great bunch of young players and they are all, the future of Somerset cricket. Do Chris and Meshy have more confidence? Well, I can speculate like you, but what I do know is that they all have talent. Confidence grows with experience, is built through practice, enhanced with praise. So I'm adding my support not only to Lewis and Alex but to all our young cricketers.Should Jos or Nick choose to move on, I have no doubt that Lewis, Alex, Chris or Meshy, have the ability and desire to become forthright replacements.

Re: Back to the Roaring 40's

I have doubts about their position Just In rather than their mental capacity. I'm not sure if Lewis is looking for a batsman or a bowling berth (I'd suggest batting because I'm unsure his body is up to bowling). Alex seemed to consolidate himself when he was also taking the gloves and may come back stronger - at times in his earlier games this season he looked like what he was, a boy in the company of men.

I didn't teach Chris for very long but the one thing you get from the guy very quickly is that he has oodles of self confidence and his place, if he makes it, is in the top 3/4.

He may not stay in cricket but he is solid - a Nick character. Mesch's bowling needs work but he has come out in short format games ready to take it on and seems capable of doing so. To be honest, our real replacement for the big hitting world class version of Jos is presently his colleague keeper.

I hope they all come through. I'm far more worried about Dibble who is not in the picture at all even when fit but many on here seem to think is one of our bowling solutions. I wish I could be so confident.

That was a cracking performance against the 'old enemy'!

Our ground fielding was not great with several fumbles in the field which led to second runs. Max of course is excluded from any such criticism. He was electric again and batters were always cautious when he was swooping onto the ball.

The bowling was tough on such a good pitch but, as noted by others, Kirbs had an uncharacteristic blip with two pretty wold leg-side wides in one over. That said apart from Max Klinger (for all M*A*S*H fans!) the Gloucs batters did not get away from us and the total looked rather gettable.

We started off like trains with Tres finding some form and Craig exploding out of the blocks - going at ten an over which got us well ahead of the game.

Kiesy was magnificent and showed great maturity in his approach and judgement as to which balls to attack. He hit some cracking shots.

Tres was very well caught by Klinger who had a storming game for Gloucs. Trigger batted very well too and one of his sixes went to the back of the carpark clearing the OP with considerable ease!! Alviro was a slight disappointment but the shot he was out to he seemed to check on has he was about to hit it. But it still went to the deep boundary at mid wicket were he was caught.

Compo played a fine Compo one-day innings and we were home and hosed!

Theres not much the boy can do if he doesnt get his opportunity except keep knocking at the door.

I'm a bit bemused Grockle, that you've twice mentioned in your last few posts about Chris Jones having other options, which he might take up. That was always my understanding, too. But when I posted a few weeks ago to say that I'd seen an article about Jones in which he said he was definitely going to give cricket a "damn good go" before considering anything else you asked me something to the effect of "why on earth shouldn't that be the case?"

As to the young players as a group - in terms of first-class cricket we've had one encouraging innings each from Jones and Barrow in first-class cricket this season. The former in the tour game, the latter probably saving us from what would otherwise have been a CC defeat.

Both men will probably get more chances between now and the end of the season, with AP off and Jos having other games to play in.

I really, really hope they are able to build on those previous innings THIS season, because now should be when their confidence is up. Barrow has also had at least two (maybe three?) successive tons at second XI level in recent weeks.

But if the SCCC strategy for when Jos leaves (as he surely will) and if NC leaves is really going to be to say that we don't need to add anyone and "we're just going with our group of talented youngsters", then ways urgently need to be found to expedite the development of said youngsters.

Hire specialist coaches, send them all over the world to gain experience in different conditions, whatever is needed, but as a group they've not previously been ready when called upon in CC cricket and I think they are going to need to have to improve quickly to get to the point where they can play with fairly consistent effectiveness in the CC team next season.

Yes, I was meaning in first-class cricket and will correct the above post to reflect that.

One day cricket is something of a different kettle of fish.. Meschede has had several encouraging performances in those games this season, and Gregory in previous seasons. Although he since seems to have become the invisible man, Adam Dibble did really well in the CLT20 as well.

IMO the dropping of James for the third match running (at this time in his career) will surely persuade him to ask the DOC if he really rates him - if not I can see a request coming in from him " Can you tear up my contract and I will go somewhere where I am wanted". IMO James would be one of the first names on my list - those left in had better score big otherwise, a lot of us will be wondering about the DOC's competence for that job - everything he has tried this season to date has turned to dust! A nice chap though!

Old Boy - are many of us not already wondering about DN and the job he has done this season?

Admittedly, he's not in form but neither is Marcus and James hasn't had a recent injury and is far more athletic in the field.

With Pete a big success opening in Pro 40 format this season, it seems obvious to me that Pete should be opening with CK.

A lot of slightly odd and premature conjecture above I note. I think it's entirely possible that DN, MT and probably JH himself have had a chat, noted that James has played nearly every game this season, and said, while AP is still here, let's give James a week off, re-charge the batteries, then come back after Alviro has to go.

As far as I know, there's no indication at all that JH is unhappy or another one in the exit queue - maybe he was just deemed deserving of a week's rest.

Also no idea why DN is being blamed for Alviro's lack of one day form OB. If you want to blame anyone blame South African Cricket not our resident Saffer.

That's a nice thought, SP, that I'd like to believe is true. JH probably would benefit from a week off, but surely it should be a week away from cricket altogether. Yet he was twelfth man at The Oval and I think he may have been twelfth man yesterday as well, though I don't know for sure or whether he was involved today. A week off should not involve going to the office every day.

Your word OB not mine.

You have as much idea about whether James is unhappy or happy about it as I have about whether he was party to the present team selection. Please don't suggest that your theory has any more weight than anyone else's AG.

We rest other players who have long and arduous seasons and there is no reason why James cannot be rested or appreciate the chance to recharge batteries for an important role in the next few matches.

I agree there's no reason why James shouldn't be rested, but three consecutive games seems excessive, particularly given Marcus's form at the moment.

Come to think of it, the last senior player I can remember being 'rested' for three consecutive 40 over games was IDB.

Now that really was a pigs ear.

Yes, one get's the feeling there is an ill fitting lid on top of quite a few bubbling issues right now.

Bit like a septic tank with a few dodgy seals.

When it breaks, it likely won't smell good & who gets hit by how much is anyone's guess. (As is who is lucky enough to see the effluent drift harmlessly past them).

Ian wasn't rested Grizzz he was dropped.

With too many senior middle order players for the places available and factoring in that one of them is being courted to stay at the club I don't think this is a normal situation.

It hasn't worked but I did say that this decision may have been taking on the perception at the tie and not on hindsight from us looking at it now. Having said that we did not lose the last one.

But we all knew that was what was happening with IDB - there has been no evidence whatsoever to suggest James has any unrest with the club though we do know they are talking extensively to NC.

I think Shep and myself are just saying it is not a forgone conclusion that this is happening without James own contribution and once again we then continue to make the point when that idea is poo'poo'd by other posters who seem to imply that we are naïve fools and the real answer is obviously their own suggested theory (not you I might add)

As you point out, whatever the source of the idea it isn't working particularly well for the middle order.

Somerset were unlucky not to dismiss Mark Wallace, the leading Glamorgan batsman at Cardiff last night, before he had scored a run.

In Peter Trego`s second over, Wallace shimmied down the wicket to the third ball and Craig K appealed for a catch behind.

The umpire gave him not out, but quick as a flash Craig realised Wallace was still well out of his crease, underarmed the ball at the stumps and, for a rare once, actually hit them.

Three or four Somerset players immediately appealed for the stumping, but unfortunately square leg umpire Richard Kettleborough (usually one of the better ones) was still looking at the umpire at the bowler`s end to see what decision he had given on the `caught behind` appeal.

So his attention wasn`t on the key moment the stumps were broken, and plainly he couldn`t give Wallace out. So Wallace remained to hit a quick-fire 70 that was the deciding factor in Glamorgan getting home by one wicket.

Just home after a long return trip (stupid motorway J21!)

Awful start to our innings, slow middle but good end (although Buttler til end could have seen us 245/250.

Awful start to our bowling, steady middle and superb end, much helped by reckless Glamorgan batting but we stuck in there and with 8 needed from last pair we were right in it.

Doesn't mask a very hurtful loss and now 2 wins may not be enough but going to be tight and RR may help us come the end, but as usual we are making it hard for ourselves.

Excellent catches from Kiesy, Dibble and Jos tonight, top drawer.

Only other downside was crowd, barely 400/500 i'd say, (of which half were Somerset), and bunch of absolute clowns behind us who were tanked up just shouting random stuff at our boundary fielders the whole 2nd innings, stewards did absolutely nothing, would never happen at Taunton!

Glamorgan v Middlesex under the Cardiff lights tomorrow - and on television - is a key YB40 match in our group now, as whoever wins will equal our current points tally at the top. Pity the Unicorns lost to Middx by a single wicket on Sunday.

As a previous poster predicted, we will be without Jos Buttler against Yorkshire the following day, because of the two-day Lions match against Australia.

But Yorkshire will now miss Alix Lees and Gary Ballance (two of the Boycott/Vaughan Yorkshire mafia merchandise) as well as Liam Plunkett for the same reason.

Whatever their titles were "Director of Cricket", "Head Coach"or chief cook and bottle washer, it was all "cricket management"and yes , The one day C&G win was while the championship cricket results were in free fall near the bottom of the table, similar to now.

I think you are slightly confused about who was in charge and who actually was doing the job at that time.

No arguments about 2006, 2007 but wasn't that Garraway? Re: Back to the Roaring 40's

Yep I thought he was much earlier and I seem to remember that he was simply the SCCC bowling coach working with Andy Caddick before that. I've no idea who the head coach as then.

From what I can recall Reeve was player coach for a couple of seasons before taking over coaching only and then his 'media commitments' took their toll in 2003. I remember a mobile phone argument between Kev and Dermot at Scarborough and then us getting to the Leics final while only hearing Dermot most of the time on the radio in the Stragglers that season.

Kev must therefore have been in charge by default in 2004 and Garraway took over in 2005 then because I am sure he was in charge when Rob Turner left at the end of that season - though he may not have been in charge all season because the changeover all happened quickly. They both went at the end of 2006 then I suppose with Rose and Langer(?) coming in for 2007? Or was Langer already here by the time Rose took over?

(Sm72)

Re: Back to the Roaring 40's
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)
Date: 13/08/2013 16:16

Think Rose took over in 2006 and spent a year trying to clear up the mess that he inherited but decided that he couldn't do it all on his own, so hired Langer for 2007 to help lick the place into shape.

Re: Back to the Roaring 40's
Posted by: Grockle (IP Logged)
Date: 13/08/2013 16:25

It must have been a mess because Reeve left the place having not really done the job for about 18 months before he went and leaving the most senior coach at the time - Kev Shine - in charge but with no official title and about halfway through the programmes that were supposed to help him become more than a bowling coach.

He was then given the job of sorting it out the next season and I think the next changeover came halfway through 2005 when Mark Garraway took over the first team (not sure if he was qualified or not) after being appointed as second team coach and they gave Kev the job he'd been training up to take over under Reeve - the youth programme co-ordinator. Lots saw this as a demotion. Shiney certainly didn't have that opinion, never really wanting the main job anyway - Bit like Burnsy with the captaincy.

Rose must have been a year earlier because I think I remember both Garraway and Shine being called into the England coaching system before they'd done a year in specific roles - so 2006 ish. So that fits.... sort of.

Yeah, with only one certain qualifier from the group, this competition may no longer be one in which we can expect to qualify.

Yorkshire gave up on it a long time ago and will turn up with a group of very young bowlers tomorrow so there's certainly scope there for Somerset to potentially bully them and win that game by a wide margin, but it looks as though too many other sides have the scope to finish ahead of us.

To be honest, going through would arguably only serve to paper over the cracks, as it arguably would have done in the T20.

I never hold with this "a win would paper over the cracks" malarkey - set out to win every game, worthwhile or not, (albeit there may be a bigger picture in, for example, resting bowlers from one comp so they're fresher for another), then review honestly at the end of the season.

Compete in every competition is the welcomed policy of the club.

Why the club should not be able to see every competition as different and assess weakness and strength in each on that basis when people here seem capable of it is always beyond me.

Does anyone here seriously think that if we won the Pro40 the presence of that cup could be used to get supporters, the media and the players to forget how miserable most of our CC1 performances have been?

I could see the club coming out with a statement (in the event that we won the Pro 40 and irrespective of our fate in the CC) along the lines of:

"We employed Dave Nosworthy to get the team over the line after so many heart-breaking losses in Finals in recent seasons. The club is absolutely delighted that, in his very first season, Dave was able to achieve this with the terrific victory at Lord's which was a great day out for so many members and supporters... STATEMENT ENDS.

SP - I think the "review at the end of the season" as you put it is precisely the point in terms of a potential "papering over of cracks". I think it's highly probable that winning something would greatly colour a review of the season as a whole.... i.e. the thought would be that "there can't be much wrong, if we've won a trophy, can there?" It might stop the hard questions being asked, the searching analysis being done etc.

You mean a MEDIA review of the season. That is entirely different.

Are you seriously saying that the supporters, members and the local press would take any notice of such a piece of nonsense whether it was issued by the club or not.

Before anyone asks the obvious question:

Yes, I'd rather win the Pro 40 than not but ONLY if winning it would not prevent a searching (self-) examination as to what went so very wrong in the CC.

Nothing that happens between now and the end of the season will stop that happening and if by some miracle we are all idiots or have been on another planet for the spring and summer, those who have watched should demand it at the local and full AGM if it isn't announced.

I meant more that it might affect the internal review within the club. In life, I think it's human nature that people do not wish to think that they have failed and will therefore search for indications that they have instead succeeded - a trophy is an obvious such indication.

As to whether supporters would take notice of something like that? I think it depends. I would assume that, like other clubs, we have some fans who are mainly only interested in the short-form cricket?

Difficult to think you have not failed when they quite obviously have - you do post some stuff AG..... worst championship season in nearly 10 years, the loss of possibly two major players, the lack of form of many of its remaining experienced stock?

And you think they'll want and be able to run away from that or put it under the carpet on the back of a 40 over trophy? What kind of people do you think are running this club and what about their record suggests this is going to be their first reaction to any positive news?

You really do have a strange view of people's motivations don't you.

Rather than 'papering over the cracks' maybe qualifying for the latter stages of the YB40 would do a lot to boost team morale for the latter part of the season as they go into the final crucial CC matches. It might even remind a couple of important team members that playing for Somerset is o bad thing. Just a thought.

Grockle - I assume that the person leading a review of the cricket side would be DN and he has no record at Somerset to inform my view (or, I assume, anyone else's) as to how he might regard the season - and what effect a one-day trophy might have on how the season was regarded.

I have always wondered about the "scattergun" approach of "going for every competion" and more so when we have a desperate CC fight on our hands now. Will a good win tomorrow put players in a winning frame of mind for next week anymore than getting them to totally concentrate on the next four day game , (then the one after that). The CC has to be all important, surely. Let the majority of the seconds play Yorkshire.

He will have to put his report in front of the people who give him that responsibility.

You seem to be assuming that IF HE CAN he will try and whitewash all this.

Given his lack of experience you don't expect a role for Roy Kerslake or Vic Marks? No input from Andy Hurry? No comments by the captain? No reference to media reports or the statistics?

You expect Guy Lavender to accept a 'papered over' report of some kind do you if the opportunity presents itself? And then SCCC will present this to the members and they won't respond to such a report in any kind of negative way?

That is really your view of what the club's DOC will be looking for the opportunity to do?(SNL Really? Really?)

Sad view of humanity and human responsibility.

I'm not saying that people will cynically do that. But when people evaluate themselves, the natural tendency, IMO, for most people is to accentuate the good and try and minimize talk of the bad.

Think, for example, of a company presenting its results at an AGM....

I have to say that in the past there most certainly have been officials within the club who have seen their role more as an ego trip than as a responsibility to the owners of the club – i.e. the Members.

Nothing more to add to that!

Back to qualification, 2 wins should ensure us qualification on 17 points. With Glam, Gloucs and the Sex playing each other only one of them can exceed that total and of the other divisions, only Northants could come second with 17 points. In that circumstance our RR is so far superior that it is unlikely to be breached and we will qualify as best second place.

AG: in your posting of 13.20, you very carefully edited out one word from your "quote" of my posting - this was the critical word "honestly"!

I wrote: "review honestly at the end of the season."

An HONEST review would acknowledge not only winning the YB40 (in the scenario we are discussing), but also the quarter final of the T20 and, importantly, a poor showing (hopefully nothing worse than that) in the CC.

Sorry, it wasn't meant to be a quote, but rather a paraphrasing.

Re: qualification - who is our other game against?

Yorkshire we should beat, not least because they will probably play a reserve bowling line-up (unless they suddenly re-instate their regulars to give them a run-out before the CC resumption)*

* Their first-choice bowlers have all been playing in the second XI game but I think they were meant to be in for only two days of it and then get pulled out again (which makes a bit of a farce of the game, but there you go).

Although they can`t spell his name correctly, the Yorkshire website is suggesting that Gary Ballance, who scored 139 against the Unicorns yesterday, will be playing against Somerset at Taunton tomorrow.

This would surely mean that Jos B is available for us.

All this seems rather unlikely though, as the YB40 fixture at Taunton won`t finish much before 7.30pm, and the Lions match against Australia at Northampton begins at 11am on Friday.

Two other Yorkies, Alex Lees and Liam Plunkett, are also involved.

Glos win was the right result for us. If we beat Glos we qualify for the semi . If we lose it is unlikely that we shall be the best second.( I have discounted Glam winning both their remaining matches by enormous margins) In Group A Notts and Northants with a win could end with 18 and 16 although if Northants lose we would be a better second than them. If both lose we end upon of the 2 best 1sts.
In group B Lancs and Hants are on 16 and 13, and play each other. A Hants win wins them the group and Lancs could only get to 15.Essex are in with an outside shout of going from 12 to 16 put they are Lancs other opponents.
So win next Mon and we are there. A loss means unlikely but not impossible if everything else was to go our way.

A tie would've given Glamorgan a point, putting them on 14 with 2 games still to play.

They could've then ended up with 18 points. If Somerset win against Gloucestershire on BHM they will be on 17 points.

Todays's result gives Somerset best chance of topping the group.

But they have to win at Bristol on Monday!

England have a one day international on the Sunday which is presumably the reason for the Monday scheduling.

As the ECB never tire of telling us how well England tickets sell it would have made more sense to switch these two matches and have the 2nd s-f on the Sunday.

Re: Back to the Roaring 40's
Posted by: Bagpuss (IP Logged)

The ODI dates will have been aranged and agreed with Cricket Australia way before the domestic schedule was even thought about - I had a ticket application form for that Old Trafford ODI back at the end of August last year; the members period for applying for international tickets was somewhere around the 2nd week of September. With a large number of tickets already sold it would have been impossible to switch the dates once the domestic schedule was organised.

Of course someone at the ECB could have looked ahead - but why break the habits of a lifetime! History suggests that the size of crowds at county matches is not that high on the list of priorities for the ECB, its up to the counties to do the best with what they are given.

I don't know if this help with anything.

I have photos of Gary Lineker at Taunton cricket ground in 1991, he wife was with him and she was pregnant, I believe that was the baby that had leukaemia.

It was George and he had leukaemia. He survived the disease so he will be in his 20's now.

I think it was their first child that had leukaemia and as Matt was born in 1987 it would make him too old

George, Harry, Tobias, and Angus are the names of Gary Linekar's children, so not related (wiki entry)

Yes, Grockle, Gary Lineker did play for Leicester before going to Tottenham.
I believe he was a more than useful cricketer as a young man.

Leicester City then Everton then Barcelona, all before Tottenham.

And as far as cricket goes, I believe he played for Leicestershire Second XI.

Yes, sadly, Lineker and Neville were two men who made bad career choices.
