Hello Goodbye and Yorkshire
Goodbye and Thanks AP
By Grockle et al
August 15 2013
The last one day game at home in the 40 over competition arrives and with it we say goodbye to Alviro Petersen our South African international and hello to another player from foreign parts for the last 20% of the season. Who that man will be is as yet unclear - maybe we will know more after today's game against Yorkshire but we wish AP good luck and happy trails in his future life in cricket and thank hhim for his contribution in a difficult season. Still in with a chance of reaching the final here Alviro - a farewell century wouldn't go amiss.
v Yorkshire YB40 @ TAUNTON Thursday 15 August 2013
Yorkshire arrive for this 40 over game with no real hope of qualifying for the next round of this competition but are still stiff opponents for our hopes of progression. The Somerset side is presently stated as;
Trescothick (C), Kieswetter (W), Trego, Petersen, Hildreth, Compton, Buttler, Meschede, Thomas, Kirby, Waller
George Dockrell is named as the 12th man. No mention of Jamie Overton or Adam Dibble though there seems to be some doubt about whether Nick Compton will be playing as he 'hasn't been here a lot this week'. I presently can't see him out on the field warming up. I wonder where he is?
So the side above alters a little. Jamie Overton and Adam Dibble come in and Nick Compton and Steve Kirby sit this one out. That will cause an amount of speculation about Nick's future in Taunton but it could be an issue of resting for some of the later games while James Hildreth (who rested for the last few one day games) takes over with Alviro.
Jos plays but two of Yorkshire's Lions - Ballance and Plunkett do not start.
We won the toss and have chosen to field first. Jos comes out wearing the gloves (which makes sense taking into account he will be doing the same in Northamptonshire tomorrow). Adam opens his account from the OP with Pete taking the ball at the other end in drizzly, windswept conditions though lighter weather seems to be floating our way from the hills. After 2 Yorkshire (in Hodgson and Gale) have 13. Adam is looking a little loose and Gale is taking a good long look at him as he takes 9 off the next over with two square shot fours through the gaps in the field. Pete tightens up in the 4th and goes for a mere 2 but comments are not particularly full of compliments as the young man starts the fifth. Gale takes his chance, comes up the wicket and swats the ball too Jamie Overton at mid off. 28 for 1 and Dibble's figures suddenly look a whole lot better.
With the news that Nick has been struck down by a gastric illness explaining his absence this week, Alfonso takes over att the Old Pavilion for over number 7 and gets a leading edge from Hodgson with his third ball as he tries to check his shot which spoons to Overton. 39 for 2 and Adam Lyth strides to the crease.
The Yorkshire 50 arrives at the end of the 9th and by the 10th 58 runs are on the board and Craig Meschede is starting his afternoon's work at the OP. He goes for 10 off his first - an over of two halves - nothing off the first three. This becomes a double change as Max opens his tally from the River and goes for 4.
There is then a bit of a press put on then by Meschede and Waller as the next 3 overs only go for runs. Unfortunately Max looks to tempt Lyth with some floated deliveries and Adam says thanks a lot and takes the 16th for 15 including the first six of the innings. This prompts Marcus to give Alviro a go at the OP and the 100 comes up off that over. This allowshim to move Mesch to the other end where he seems to get some movement in the air and he only goes for 4. Jamie Overton is finally introduced in the 19th as the light gets worse and the rain looks like it is sweeping in from the River end. Lyth again takes a shine to another bowler and he moves the score on to 118 at the end of the over.
Lyth and Lees look dangerous through the first 5 overs of the second half and it is with some relief that the crowd of about 2500 celebrate the removal of Lees by Alfonso with the first ball of the 27th just after the Yorkshire men passed 150. Clean bowled without seeing a quicker one that nipped backfor 62 at 157.
Max then forces the opposition to think a bit as he gets Lyth to have a go at one back of a length which he doesn't fully connect with and which Thommo takes in the deep 164 for 4 and the big partnership has finally been broken. Can Somerset now get the Yorkies back nearer to 250 than 300 as Rafiq joins Leaning in the middle.
With 8 overs to go Yorkshire have 195 on the board. Max takes the 33rd - a gamble as the batsmen will try and get after him before seam comes back. They go over 200 with the 4th delivery - a long off boundary and finish the over with 10 off it. They have to be looking over 250 and Somerset have to be looking for less than 6 an over to chase. It is down to Alfonso to take his club home from the River. A slow full toss does for Rafiq who misreads the awful ball and just pops it up to Trego at wide mid off.
Gibson joins Leaning and the score moves slowly on but the second ball of the 35th pushes the Tykes further away from 250 as the returning Adam Dibble totals Gibson's stumps at 214. Pyrah looks to hook the last ball of the over and gets a tickle, 216 for 7 and Dibble takes 2 in the over.
We have just had the official line on Jos and the keeping situation for all you speculating fans. It seems that the plan was always for him to start keeping wiith this game until the England/Australia on day series started - the Lions aspect was not factored in as it made no difference and so he will keep in games until then
By the 38th, Leaning has a 42 ball 50 and the two men have pushed the score in touching distance of 250 (235) Alf is bowling what one person in the Press Box is calling some 'wierd shit' (Yorker length outside off) but they aren't getting him away and only take 3 off his over. They pass 240 with the second ball of the 39th and are 248 by the 4th which results in a Trescothick, Dibble and Waller conference. AD chucks Leaning a full toss and he piles into it, gets a top edge and sends it right down Max's throat. "Max knows!" Ladies and Gentlemen. 248 for 8 with an over to go.
Alf takes the last one;
Ball 1 - 6 (250 up = 255)
Ball 2 - 4 (259)
Ball 3 - dot (259)
Ball 4 - dot (259)
Ball 5 - 1 (260)
Ball 6 - 1 (261)
Somerset need 262 to win. I would suggest it should not be enough.
The Reply
Marcus and Craig K open for us facing Wardlaw and Ashraf. It is tight for the first over and a single is all they can get. However in the second the skipper opens his shoulders a little and finishes it with a mighty six into the Somerset stand. 10 for 0 after two. Then the Trescothick wheels come off once again as he weakly flaps his next ball off Wardlaw to Lees at mid off, he wafts the ball at the ground and wanders off once again.
Pete Trego finds himself as good as opening once more coming in for most of the third over with 10 on the board. He settles in as Somerset take the score to 18 and then cuts loose to double the score by the end of the 4th (from 18 to 35) with some majestic hitting. By the 6th over the two men have bludgeoned the score to 51 and look ready for a fight.
With 10 gone the two men have pushed it to 74. Trigger has moved into the 40's and is having a bit of a tussle with Lyth who is getting bounce and has the Somerset man missed with the second ball of the 12th as the ball goes through Hodgson the keeper. Pete wins that one though by smacking four off the Yorkshire bowler later in the over.
His 50 comes up at 98 at the end of the 13th. 51 off 53 balls with 8 fours and 1 six. It has restored the momentum of the innings as he and Craig K put together a partnership presently at 89. The 100 arrives with the third ball of the 14th with PT on 23 and his partnner on 29. At the same position Yorks were some 25 runs behind with 2 wickets down.
The 100 partnership comes up with the 5th ball of the 16th at 110 but just after that Craig doesn't get hold of one and he is caught at mid on for 40 at 113, 2 balls into the 17th. Out comes Alviro Petersen for his final innings for us.
The Yorkshire bowlers put a press on and the Somerset men have to close up big bash shop for a while. It is pulled back to the point where we are only 9 runs ahead of the visitors by the 20th over. Then Alviro cuts loose off Gibson and smacks him for 2 consecutive sixes halfway through the 21st. 129 becomes 141 in a couple of minutes. Then the game turns into the Peter Trego Show. The wonderful final cameo from Alviro who leaves to very warm applause after a 50 with 4 fours and 3 sixes is blown away by the noise when The Weston Boy reaches his hundred and then destroys his highest score of the season at 241 for 5 (119). Others come and go (Jos first ball, James bowled) but only one man is in this game and EVERYTHING he tries comes off from the basic slog to the most audacious 'ramps'. The 250 arrives halfway through the 38th. Craig Meschede is in with him but only as a bit player and he is caught well at 253 with one ball left of the 38th. Somerset need 9.
In comes Alfonso with 13 balls left needing 9 runs. He blocks out the last ball from Ashraf - bowling excellent Yorkers (not surprisingly). Unfortunately Wardllaw bowls a wide that goes for 4 off the first ball of the 39th but he gets back into his stride and he bowls Alfonso with 7 balls to go. We need 4 and Dibble walks into face Wardlaw's last ball. He keeps it out.
Ben Coad takes the last over from the River facing Pete. He pushes the ball out to the Somerset Stand for a single. They push for two, the fielder (Robinson) panics, misses the ball and the backing up fielder, Lees, doesn't cut the ball off and it goes for the badly needed four!!
Somerset win with Trigger 140 NOT OUT off 103 balls with 19 fours and 2 sixes. He came in planning to wiin this game and if he isn't Man of the Match then someone is blind. Best performance of the season by any Somerset player and a total joy to watch. Well done AP thanks for that nice little memory as well.

We share something - this is my last live English cricket this year. I'll hopefully return - happy trails if you don't sir.
Can we make ourselves something more in this competition than an "also rans" in 2013? Yorkshire would like to say NO I'd love to see us emphatically say YES!

Even if Glamorgan win their last 4 I make it we will definitely come 2nd if we win 2 due to our run rate.
I also make it we will be the best 2nd place of the 3 groups should we end up on 17 points due to our run rate.
Jos named in the squad is a surprise, as he's due in Northampton by 11am Friday morning, very friendly of the ecb is they are letting him play in Taunton the night before until 7.30pm!!!
I think Jos could play a 40 over game and be OK for Friday in Northants. Might as well get the most out of the player before he pops off.

Not that I'm remotely worried about Plunkett.
You're slipping :-)

I don't necessarily have a view one way or the other as to whether Alf should play but I would like to see Adam Dibble retained in the side as he seemed to do well under pressure in Wales.
Looks like the national forecast for next week's CC round is excellent.

People might point to a 50 when the early order had failed on Monday, but at 75 balls, all that really does is ensure a respectable, but ultimately inadequate score. James H may well have failed in that position, but if he had made a score it would probably have been a much quicker one and given us a chance. Slow, steady "rescue" innings very rarely pay dividends, far better to have a chancer who, if successful can still win you the match.
Ashraf, Coad, Gale (c), R Gibson, Hodgson (wk), Leaning, Lees, Lyth, Pyrah, Rafiq, Robinson, Wardlaw.
Think Keis' innings at last years finals day, and Jos' at Lords, both fine innings surrounded by failures, but ultimately in vein and to be honest never in doubt. In both cases, caution to the wind earlier might have been rewarded and if not only respectability would have been lost.
In my memory we have had a few matches at Cardiff that have come down to the wire, with Somerset either succeeding or just failing to defend a relatively low total. They came within a couple of balls, or a wicket of succeeding again.
The trouble with going with the 'sh*t or bust' approach on this occasion is that had it not come off and Somerset had collapsed to, say, 140 all out, then Glamorgan's chase would have been much easier, they would have chased with more freedom and likely won in far fewer overs, thus doing untold damage to Somerset's NRR, which as it stands is worth an extra point in the table.
Weather today may have an influence, not so much because it could rain but because it is very humid and very overcast. No idea about the size of crowd today - no real indicators yet - probably 500 floating about the place. Balance(?) at least has been seen here with the Yorkies and him and the other Lions players are on the team sheet.

I think the team selection is immaterial. It all depends which team turns up, the good or the bad. One never knows nowadays.
I think it's more "is the game being played on a very good batting track, or not?"
If the answer is "yes", then we are very difficult to beat. If the answer is "no", less so and the slower the pitch the easier we are to beat, IMO.
Somerset have won the toss and will field., Overton is in for Compton and Dibble is in for Kirby

Would certainly make sense for JH to have a first-team game prior to Edgbaston.

Cricinfo suggests that the current weather is "light rain"??

Who could possibly tell us all?

Very good figures, thus far, from Craig M.

If he doesn't produce, he should not play. One player cannot be bigger than the club, irrespective of:
a) How nice a man they are.
b) How great a player they once were.
or
c) The fact that they are the skipper.
Personally, I think if Marcus does not do anything against Warks in the CC then it's time for someone official to be big enough to stand up and give him the unwelcome tap on the shoulder.
It won't happen, and I'd venture that the vast majority of the club's supporters wouldn't want it to happen during the biggest dog-fight in the club's recent history.

I wonder if we will get a blast of this soon: -
It was an old 78 vinyl disc called ‘The captain played his ukulele as the ship went down.’

I'd still venture that those views are shared by a minority.
Sad but no room for emotion in sport - especially when relegation is a real possibility. Mind you he is not alone in the sword stakes this season...............!
He hasn't made a ton this season and his last 50 was in, what, June?
SOMERSET
And they're not such big shoes at a time when he's achieving nothing with the bat.
I don't know who should replace Tres but I just think that A N Other might score some runs whereas I think Tres is all but nailed on to struggle/fail.
And I doubt it can help the rest of the team to see him struggling so much.
140 not out, came in at 10 for 1, scored the winning 4 plus 18 others and 2 sixes in a 103 blitzkrieg of the Yorkshire bowlers.
Leave Marcus until later and try supporting your @#$%& county for a @#$%& change!!

But of course no-one wants to talk about that because the skipper got 10. 10 more runs I might add than the young England hope Mr Jos Buttler.
As FE has said a couple of times - get a grip. We haven't had much to celebrate and there are four days to run don the side again before the next CC1 match. Have a night off.

If Trescothick were injured and unable to feature, then someone (young or not) would have to step up.
I am not altogether sure that Marcus can cope with "the pressure" nowadays, and is this recognised by the rest of the team?
I don't know, but in any event well played to Somerset today, and in particular to Peter and 'sen' of Peter and Adam.
As regards Marcus Trescothick, I am a supporter, not a selector. Players are all the more in need of support when they are having a poor run of scores - and Marcus Trescothick, more than anyone, surely deserves the support of all Somerset supporters.
We won. It doesn't matter how equally the runs were shared out.
Quote:Grockle
Peter Trego has presently scored 705 runs in the YB40 competition at an average of 88.12. He tops the scoring table by well over 100 runs.
But of course no-one wants to talk about that because the skipper got 10. 10 more runs I might add than the young England hope Mr Jos Buttler.

Jos made more runs in one innings in Cardiff than our Captain has probably made since June!!
Marcus looked unconvincing to me in the first half of the season and, since then, the wheels have fallen off entirely.
Dave Nosworthy will need to earn his money by making the hard call, IMO.

Big word though, that "think", isn't it.
Form is temporary, class is permanent. Marcus has it in spades and I'd still back him over any of the available alternatives to get the runs we need.
Sentimentality has nothing to do with it.
Otherwise we should have re-signed Joel Garner as overseas rather than getting Chawla.
I agree that with any given player the 'when', is a matter of opinion.
The point is that your evidence for advancing your chosen neophyte is second XI runs, which you told us a month ago were meaningless, and which have aldo been recently scored by the bucket-load, by the man you want dropped.
Your logic has no.........logic.
There is ZERO empirical evidence to suggest that Jones, Barrow or Abell are remotely likely to deliver significantly in the CC games to come. Tres has done so many, many times before, and is by far the most likely to do so again.
Quote:Warwick have a day night game on Monday and we don't start until 12.00AGod
What late finish, GM?
Our bowling seemed to lack some potency so I was surprised that in the end we got them out for well under 300. Except for one or two loose balls I think the big plus was Dibble. He really looks the part to me, AND has a super action which should stand him in good stead for the future.
On the batting front some good and some bad performances. Any batter can be out first ball so I wouldn't criticise Jos or CM.
The debate goes on ref Marcus. I can only say that in any Somerset team currently available, he would be the first name I would write down, BUT IMO he should be using his unique batting skills from the middle order 4,5 or 6. IMO the balls he has been getting out to this season as an opener would have been duly despatched in former years, and I'm afraid it comes down to his injury problems and AGE.
However, I guess at this stage it is a decision which only he can make!
If 'class' in the context of a batsman boils down to the ability to make runs then it's obvious that class cannot be 'permanent'. For most people it might last a maximum of 20 years.
If 'class' is instead meant to relate to the personal qualities of a human being then that's a bit different, though those too could not possibly be 'permanent'. Nor are they likely to put runs on the board.
Tres is only 'by far the most likely to deliver again', if he hasn't hit the wall, isn't bereft of confidence etc

Old Boy - good to hear reibble.
Sorry AG, but your smiley means nothing to me? Does it mean that I have your approval or disapproval?
I must know, otherwise I couldn't sleep tonight!

Can't agree with you on two aspects OB
This game was not over with 15 overs to go - we had to score over 6 an over with 5 overs to go and had PT got out we would have struggled to win the game.
Dibble's figures flattered to deceive. He was little real threat to at least two of his wickets. The ball that got his third was a long hop after he had been tonked in the over for very easy boundaries. If anything the Yorkshire players got themselves out going after Dibble as one of the weaker members of our attack.
Fine if he can be that lucky every game but it was like David Stiff's first few games in terms of his bad balls getting wickets because they were bad enough to make batsmen misjudge trying for maximums.
For your reference AG - Yorkshire were not playing their 2nd eleven or reserves or whatever you called them.
Don't write this work off simply because you personally think the Yorkshire team wasn't worthy of the contest. You weren't there and you have no idea.
We are not a great bowling side and we weren't particularly today - Craig Meschede was tight, Max was OK when he didn't try and flight the ball, Alfonso and Pete had their moments, Jamie looked raw and Adam looked promising but loose.
Yorkshire had good quality players who play good quality cricket and the reason we didn't beat them in 25 overs was because we couldn't press them and they pressed us.
It was a good contest with one stand out player who backed himself and came in to win this game.
I understand that your objective is to find fault and indications to prove your own view of the side you are a 'fan' of - that everything they do is poor. But don't go too far when you have no idea (mostly because you seem to have spent the whole second half of the game whinging about the form of our captain).

And I don't have any 'objectives', whatever you might think.
obvious
One day you'll post when we don't expect you. It'll be when Somerset have a good day.
Looking forward to that one.

I didn't say your objectives were conscious. It's become such a habit you don't even know you are doing it. I believe it would feel uncomfortable for you to look on the bright side - it must be so long since you did it.
You are no fan of Somerset. You can say you are but you really aren't.
You are a critic, you are nothing else and what is more you are the worst type because you are a biased critic so closed in to your own set of criteria that you don't even notice they are unrealistic and slanted.
You couldn't be wrong if you tried because your criteria for analysis don't allow that to happen under any circumstances.

The only real negative was Marcus's form yet again, I agree coming in at 4 or 5 wouldn't be a bad thing but who's going to suggest that to him...

Perhaps those who are in overall charge of cricket at the club, Tumbles?
Or there again, perhaps nobody?
I doubt anyone will be bold enough to tell Tres that he's dropped, or that he might drop down the order.

I'll have to be surprised when we do well and Average comes on and says how well we did. Then again he may have to do it under a nom de plume.

Why is he Chairman of the club's Cricket Committee then, Grockle?
I do not consider it to be a purely honorary or powerless appointment.
But perhaps you know otherwise?
Well done Tregs 140, quite an apt title.
Tres is a legend and will return.
Well done Somerset

I have instead been trying to read some of the more interesting post on the game and ignore the rest that is of no interest, I managed to spot Bagpuss post and her question on Alex Lees in among the rest, I thought he batted quite good today as did some of the other Yorkshire batsman.
Bagpuss, I will look through my photos tomorrow in more detail and see what I have of Alex Lees and let you know by PM.
Done - apologies

They must hate the sights of each other.
Thank you for your kind words. I'm sure you are right and hope the relevant drugs take hold soon.

4 day stuff granted we have been poor at best and face a battle to survive, but lets understand Surrey and Derbyshire are and have been WORSE so far, next 6 weeks will clearly dsecide our fate.
But one day wise we what more do we want as one day fans at home.
Unless i'm wrong we have played 6 home YB40's and won how many, SIX.
T20's we played 5 home games and won 4.
So from 11 home one days game we have won 10, not too shabby.
We made the 1/4's of the T20 narrowly missing out, and are massive favourites on paper to make the YB40 semi's now.
Best case now is we finish 7th in LVCC and win the YB40, will that not be an excellent season for the many who have bemoaned our mass of 2nd place finishes in recent years.
As for today Tregs was superb, given match scenario when wickets started falling best knock I've seen from him (including the Yorkies chase under JL)
Jos looked to get a good one, sincerely hope that is not to be how he finishes his SCCC career at Taunton.
Fielding again I thought was shabby and bowling has plenty of work to do. But without opponents putting 290+ on the board we just never seen in doubt chasing, we can literally get anything with our line up, and this is without Tres firing yet, which I've no doubt he will in the coming weeks, class is permanent.

I tend to agree FE that nothing will happen.
I doubt anyone will be bold enough to tell Tres that he's dropped, or that he might drop down the order.
You're right, AG. If Tres doesn't get dropped it will be because no-one is "bold" enough to drop him. It couldn't possibly be because the collective opinion of those whose job it is to make such decisions believe he's still the best option we have. It couldn't be that. No. You, in your infinite wisdom, have declared him a busted flush, and it's just a question of finding someone with the balls to tell him.
The arrogance is astounding.
Its crazy to suggest we drop him, just crazy.
Yes he is out of form but we just give up on him?
Have you looked at the LVCC averages? Is he outside our best 6 batting options?
With Alviro and Jos out of next weeks line up what do we want it to be?
Jones, Compo, Gregory, Hildy, Kiesy and Barrow?
We honestly think that line is stronger than 1 that had Tresco in it?
I just hope all those requesting his demotion or dropping happily admit they are wrong if/when he scores a few hundreds at the top of the innings in the next few games.
I appreciate others have their opinions but the guy hasn't batted anywhere other than opening for what, 15+ years? No guarantee he would blitz runs at number 4 or 5, nor that throwing a new guy into open would improve things in any way.
I'm backing our skipper and best batter in what last 25/30 years to come good, nobody will be trying harder than Marcus himself, he loves the club more than we do and will be desperate to come good.
The way AGod says things gets right up my nose if you haven't noticed but not everything he points out is without merit.
If Marcus wants his class to continue to show for Somerset then he has to reassess his value to the side as we've discussed at other times.
I think he has a considerable amount of class yet to provide but I personally don't think that is as an opener. I think that part of his career is over.
However the CC cannot paint the whole season black no matter how those with blinkers on and looking for the darkness wherever possible suggest it has. Other parts of the summer have been better.
Those better performances must also not paint the whole season white either. If we scrape into next year's CC1 we have fundamental issues to deal with in our batting and bowling
The YB40 would be good- today's performance from Pete can't do anything but good for him and for many others in the side. Alviro left us in credit and some of the bowlers are getting the hang of pressing. A trophy might be useful to get away from that bridesmaids tag.
But guarantee CC1 versus YB40 victory? I'd take the first every time.

when he hit the winning runs the ball was going straight to a fielder I was thinking I hope it is not a single to get off strike then it went through the fielders hands for the winning four.
He was very pleased indeed and his reception from the crowd was resounding

I will read your report tomorrow, I am going to bed
Goodnight.

Yes, when Dermot Reeve was here he had some struggles but, back then, he was a guy that averaged 30 anyway, not the colossus that he became in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Thank you for stating them and re-stating them and re-restating them and re-re-re-....
Even someone as intellectually challenged as myself now understands your position.
I do try and have a light hearted approach when posting some of my photos, no different this time.
What a marvellous innings by Peter Trego anybody watching can't tell me they didn't get nervous when Meschede and Thomas was out for nought.
Adam Dibble looked good, yes some loose balls but considering he hasn't play much cricket for the first team he did okay.
This ball from Adam Dibble just grazed Andrew Gale's elbow I wonder if he would have had a hot spot there.
This ball from Adam Dibble to Andrew Gale narrowly missed the bat and went through to Jos Buttler, no wonder Adam is looking to the sky.
Andrew Gale was caught by Jamie Overton bowled by Alfonso Thomas.
Be careful where you put your hand Marcus Jamie is a big lad.
What is going on here!
It was an attempted run out of Alex Lees, the ball was thrown in to Alviro Petersen's end he try to redirect it onto the stumps missed and both batman and fielder ended in a heap on the ground.
Jamie Overton I still think he bowls too many short ball it should be a surprise ball!
This is a short ball to Adam Lyth did looks like the ball came off his hip or a bottom edge.
Alfonso Thomas bowling Alex Lees by the amount of dust it could have been a yorker.
Adam Lyth going for a leg side shot off Max Waller only to be caught by Alfonso Thomas.
Rich (has cricinfo calls him) Pyrah caught by Jos Buttler off Adam Dibble.
A bit out of focus this photo.
The look Peter Trego was giving Dan Hodgson for trying to stump him should have had him shaking in his boots.
I try to balance my photos nobody is spared.
Not a pretty sight seeing Jos Buttler bowled by Rich Pyrah.
A fitting end to my photos being that is was Peter Trego's day, here he is celebrating his 1000000 runs, sorry got carried away (who said I should be) 100 runs.
Edit - I don't know my stop's from my spot's

Either Pete has a nice line in self-deprecation or I think you are right that he sometimes under-estimates himself.
I remember a one-day game against Hants where James Vince played very well and got lots of runs and Pete also scored well. Pete was interviewed afterwards on Sky and praised and he said something like "I just go out there and have a bit of a hit, it's the other guy (Vince) that you want to be talking to because that was absolute class".
I notice that he also said on the official site something along the lines of "Maybe I've grown up", after yesterday. Actually he said it in the third person but I refuse to repeat quotes that are in the third person. What he seemed to mean was that he'd batted pretty much through an innings and seen us over the line.

On Sunday, he looked really good and he will do again. When he's in form the team looks confident and we win. He'll be back.

As to what my great-great-great-grandfather said to a footballer from Rugby School ...
Quote:Grockle
Reads a little too much like as the name of an ex Surrey player. Old Boy might misread and go into apoplexy thinking the 'beloved one' had returned
Grockle! I'm never out of apoplexy so what's the problem?
Our only concern will be if Kartik has had Chawla under his wing teaching him all the "dirty tricks of the spin bowler's trade!!"
For once I chose a terrific day to attend and have the privelige to watch a master performance by Peter Trego. Truly admirable.
Thoughts:
Our bowling & fielding were pretty scrappy to be honest. Max Waller's bowling does seem to be be rather predicatable. Two good balls, a long hop, a full toss & any two others comprise the standard over. Good fielder he may be, but I really don't share the view that he is a class bowling act.
Batting:
Marcus. Really can't see why he is still opening. His form has been & continues to be dire in that position. It repeatedly leaves us exposed. Surely he would be better off at 5/6 to beef up the middle order. Today would have been a good opportunity to do that as we tried valiantly (but fortunately failed) to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
CK - very impressive. A surprise when he got out.
AP - understated (despite hitting 2 or 3 sixes), in his accumulation of important runs.
JB - The nine or ten year old next to me muttered to his mates that "Jos is distracted at the moment" & it was difficult to argue with that assessment !
Alf - Not impressed by his "batting", but especially his selfish actions that could have cost us the game. There were - I think - about 9 balls left when Pete ran a quick first run & obviously wanted the second. Alf refused, instead keeping the strike & managing to take a couple of balls to get a duck. Didn't help the team one little bit at that point.
Trigger - Must salute him for an amazing innings. I think he only gave one 'chance', when he should have been stumped. His maturity in seeing us home was wonderful to see, as so many times before we have seen players get so far & then get out a few overs before the end, only for us to fail.
Well done Pete - the more so for saluting the crowd at the end. I know I've said it before, but he embodies the spirit that we need & would clearly walk through a barn door for us. I still believe he would make an excellent Captain if a vacancy should arise.
Overall, a most enjoyable afternoon. I'm sorry I didn't have chance to look up the Grocklees - (especially BR who I still owe at least two pints to !). I did spy Tractor I think - but he appeared to be wearing a suit - so maybe it wasn't him !
One final oddity - re Duckworth Lewis.
We were ahead for our entire innings - generally by 15-20 runs at the end of each over. Towards the end, as we lost more wickets, the margin came right down, which made sense. What I couldn't wrap my head around however, was that at the end of the 39th over (when we were 258-7), the DL target showed 261, i.e. the total that Yorks had made. So according to D/L we needed to have tied the score, with a full over left. Anyone make sense of that ?
Grizzzly
Ha there been an almighty downpour three balls in to the final over a new calculation wold have had to be mae for the D/L par score at the precise moment the match was called off
Many thanks Bagpuss. A fountain of knowledge as always.

Either pick him in his specialised role or do not pick him at all.
His problem is possibly not a lack of 'capability'.
It is simply a natural slight degeneration of the hand eye co-ordination which makes his opener issues that have always been with him (regarding foot movement) more of a problem in the opening slot. Move him down the order and the ball is slower and the problems become less of a problem.
Same possible reason Langer's number of LBW's increased.
See, it's not all, can't hit ball retire or we'll sack you.
