And so we reach the nasty end of the season and the issues of the front end lack of quality in four day cricket has not been rectified. Questions have been asked, answers have not been forthcoming and we find ourselves in a three way competition to maintain fiirst division status where two will fail and only one willl remain. With Derbyshire on a bit of a roll and few points between them and Surrey and Somerset we need to start hitting some form. Piyush Chawla comes in on our side and against Middlesex he seems to have done just that on the second day!!

Although our one day and T20 form has been quite good our four day form has been abysmal for most of the season. Except for the weather saving Warwickshire early on we have been second in most of our encounters and at places such as Horsham we would have been lucky to have even had that accolade. Nothing has gone right. The captain and the MVP allrounder for 2012/2013 have hardly been able to buy a run between them. Our bowlers have been under powered and our middle order has, on occasions looked like a bunch of lemmings fighting to be the first one to commit willow suicide on the cliffs.
We've hoped for better but haven't seen it, we've expected people to come out of slumps only to see them fall further into them. Except for Craig Kieswetter when not sidelined through injury and Alex Barrow as the season has gone on, Championship performances to talk about with pride have been few and very far between.
So it brings us here to a few games left and victory the only real thing between us and a season in the seconds unless a mathematical margin keeps us up. We come to Lord's and face Middlesex needing something to push us forward.
Peter Trego is sidelined with a hand injury, Steve Kirby is sidelined and Jos Buttler has been called up to the England T20 squad and so we are going into the game with what seems an understrength side to some extent. The side to face the 'Sex is;
Trescothick, Compton, Jones, Hildreth, Barrow, Kieswetter, Meschede, Gregory, Chawla, Thomas, Overton J
We still go in 'seamer heavy' having considered the two spin option of including George Dockrell and shelving it. You get the feeling that we would like to bat first and try and set a total and in fact that is how it pans out as Marcus calls right and puts us in.
A lot is expected of our senior players and we have hopes that at this end of the season the 'younger' players have some experience and are no longer dazzled by the lights. It starts well as the skipper, straight from a 50 in the last one day game exercises some coontrool oon the game and himself an exhibits some of the old Trescothick power. Nick Compton is also looking strong until in the late 70's he chooses to play and ill judged shot annd is dismissed by Dexter. His place is taken by Chris Jones who is no longer the part time student who joins for a couple of games at the end of season. He is now a full time member of this team and carving a name for himself as a coreect and highly technically proficient batsman in his own right. He helps Banger to 100 for the side and 50 for himself.
The Boss is the next to go at 116 LBW to Murtagh and the situation starts to look familiar as new man James Hildreth follows his captain back to the pavilion almost immediately having made only 7 before being caught behind off Dexter. Oh dear we all go, the doomsayers start to gather on Grockles and we all look at the sky and hope it isn't going to happen again.
Kieswetter joins Jones with 139 on the board and our short form opening partnership start to do some repair work on the Somerset score. They do exactly that to take Jones to a well crafted 50 but he goes only a little further before he is caught behind off Dexter for a solid 58 at 178. Out comes Barrow to join his keeper and we look for solid defence until CK has a head fit and goes for a big "wahoo" and is comprehensively cleaned up by Patel justt the other side of 200. "Madness" we moan. If only it was unusual in 2013.
Out comes Meschede to join Barrow with a big question to answer. If our senior batsmen can't keep their heads can the players called in do anything more? Well it seems that they can as the two young men start to put up the defences, batten down the hatches and look to go down fighting. Unfortunately CM has no luck and is stumped lifting his foot after only 7 balls with no addition to the score. We doubt we will reach batting point territory (not a surprise this season) but we misjudge the back end of the Somerset batting line-up. Lewis Gregory looks rusty and stays a very short period before he is caught by Robson off Rayner only moing the score to 211.
Supporters expect the worse. The most negative forum posters can be heard cackling in the wings and we look to analyse another poor first innings - one of so many. Bbut we all do this without accounting for new boy Piyush Chawla. The young Indian spinner is know as a decent bat but little prepares us for his work with Barrow from here.
211 becomes 318 before Alex is LBW for an excellent 65. We have bonus points!! But PC is not finished. Alf comes out to support and the score continues to creep upwards. By the end of Day 1 the nightmare of another batting collapse has become the enthusiasm of 332 for 8 and the hope of more to come!!

Re: Peter Trego. Not sure if he will be fit but I would say that his form with bat has been so very poor in the CC this season that he should be considered- for selection purposes – as a bowler. In other words, if he’s one of our 4 or 5 best bowlers (depending on how many bowlers we want to pick), select him, if he’s not? Omit him.
Jamie Overton has generally not been great away from home this season but did bowl well in the YB40 at Lord’s and the Lord’s tracks often have pace and bounce in them. For this reason, I think I would bring Jamie back into the side.
I assume Jos will return.
Lord’s is normally a one-spinner ground. It would seem perverse to drop George as he has just found form, so George would be my choice of spinner. Let Chawla try and find form in the second XI ahead of the final two homes games, I think?
Still not convinced by Tresco – if Middx pick Rayner, then I think he’ll pick up Tres quickly in both innings (if Marcus gets past the new ball).
But I accept that there’s zero chance of Tres being dropped.

On further reflection, I think they'll pick four seamers for Lord's. Still suspect that, perversely, George will get left out having just found something like his best form.

It's far too expensive for me to even contemplate making Lords for the whole game.
I'm hoping there will be enough playing time left for a trip up on Saturday when train fares are less expensive ( only £33 with disabled card!) and entrance is only £5.

I think Jamie Overton is still very much work in progress.

He has also generally not been effective in CC games away from Taunton, IMO.
However, a typical Lord's track has bounce and pace and he is the only guy that Somerset possess that is well-placed to take advantage of those traits. Hence, if cricket management judge the track to be a typical Lord's one, then I think they'll get Jamie in there.
As an aside, he did bowl notably well in the day/night Pro 40 game at Lord's earlier this season.
We have nobody else that approaches his pace, and only really his injured twin and Hussain (whom I watched bowl like a drain at Lord's in the corresponding fixture last season) can approach his height.
The forecast for the first day is unbroken sunshine as well, so if we have to bowl first one doubts there'll be much swing for guys like Alf or Pete (if they play).

I see that as a generous interpretation given that we would probably have lost if not for rain AND that the oppo were without three main pace bowlers.... Woakes, Rankin and Wright. Yes, we were without Jos and Overton but I don't think Jamie would have played anyway on what was expected to be a slow turner, whereas Warks' team selection implies that at least two of their missing guys probably would have played (Warks picked two very inexperienced seamers for the game).
When the overhead conditions at Lord's are clear it can be a great track for batting on so if we get to bat first tomorrow there should be no excuses for not making hay once we're through the new ball, but then I'm sure we've been thinking that a few times this season.

Quite probably, I think, although I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Patel playing ahead of Rayner.
Rayner has actually had his best year with the ball this season. Until this year he hadn't taken a 5 wicket haul for us.

So? I'm sure there will be comments on here about the Pro semi-final, there's already been a comment on another thread about the Surrey game re; what our strategy might be and, I dare say, there may well be some comments on the away Ashes series well before it gets under way.

I think they would play Jove over Kirby anyway from last week, and Mesch over Tregs.
I would personally have had Adam over Alfie but don't think the club would ever do that.
Liking the idea of 2 spinners, we have to try something and as it is sounds like we have no serious seam bowling choice anyway other than Lewis.

Migraines can be terrible - my sister often misses three or four days at a time of her job, sitting at a desk in a quiet office. I get about two a year, often lasting as much as 30 mins when my vision goes a bit wobbly and my head hurts a bit.

It required one of my Aunt's to sit in total darkness for up to 10 hours to get rid of hers. When I used to get them in my younger days I lost all but the middle vision of both eyes.

Middx will be clear bookies' favourites for this one, mainly because of their far stronger seam attack. If we are to upset the odds then I tend to think that three men in particular - Compton, Kieswetter and Alf will need to come up REALLY big.
The first two are the main batsmen in form. We might pick two spinners but I don't see it turning much for the first couple of days so will probably need a yeoman effort from Alf to lead a seam attack that may have only two other members. Regardless of whether we have two or three other seamers, Alf will have the responsibility of providing leadership as the others are all really rather inexperienced.
I hope that Barrow can build on two patient knocks vs Warks. And Craig M made 59 in this most recent CC game vs Notts so really hope he can build on that too.

I seem to remember that a couple of seasons ago Trescothick's bat manufactuer announced that they would pay him £1 million (or £100,000 or something in between maybe) if he hit a straight six over the Lord's pavilion. I wonder if that still applies. A good day for it if it does.

Very good seam bowling from Middx - they've had no luck so far with balls going past the bat. We've also seen some good 'soft hands' stuff from our guys to stop nicks going to slip.

We need two more similar sessions, Tumbles. They bowled very well with new ball but looks like nada in it for any type of bowler by lunch which was what made the NC give-away so frustrating ... I think he was already thinking '150 for me here'.

So two senior batsmen with good starts but no big ton - Hildreth or Kieswetter need to change that pattern if we want a shot at winning this one.

As I said on an earlier post on another thread, IMO not many of Somerset's "promising young players" have made much progress this year, with some even having regressed.
It's good to read about the performances of these two today at Lord's.

Well two of the 'senior batsmen' put 79 on for the first wicket Rodders and one of them is the highest scorer presently in this innings before we tar them all with a lack of anything.
The man who has taken@#$%&on here for almost a season hit his second 50 in two games so give him some credit at least.
Hildreth failed but two of the 'Youngsters' introduced to fill the gaps seem to have done their job and we will pass 300 thanks to the solidity of Jones and Trescothick and Barrow. How far we get past 300 will depend on the wagging tail.
Be thankful we have quality in the back field rather than miserable that 2 batsmen who should know better can't leave a juicy one alone.
The mistakes were made by Compton and Kieswetter who lost their heads when in. 2 out of 7 ain't that bad sir.

Super day, whether we were 100-1 this week, 208-7, where we have ended up given this season problems is more than fine for me.

Very good recovery.
But also one that put conditions is some perspective. 211 for 7 was a lamentable position in those conditions.
Hope that Chawla's batting success gives some mojo to his bowling.
The only thing that wasn't in favour of the batsmen today was a slowish outfield.

I don't understand how a track used for 80 overs is equivalent to it being two days old?
Regardless, Gregory for Dockrell looked a questionable move on paper and Gregory will have to bowl really well if it's not to look a poor move on grass.

The BBC site also reports that the pitch should take spin as the game progresses.
It would be nice to keep them in the field for an hour or so and pick up extra batting points.

In any case, Marcus, DN and AH will have seen the pitch and known it was played on earlier in the week, and then selected accordingly, so they must have a decent idea that one spinner was the way to go.

Enjoyed my first ever visit to Lords, although mid way through the afternoon wasn't enjoying the Somerset batting much! A great partnership from Alex and PC rescued the innings. 350+ might be a good score, was a lot of playing and missing and edges dropping safe. Dexter with his medium pace looked the most dangerous, didn't seem to turn much even though the spinners got three wickets.
Seemed a good turn out and heard plenty of support from the west country. Got a bit hot up in the upper tier of the Edrich stand but was a glorious day to watch cricket
I left an hour before close and on my way out Nick Compton was in the nursery nets working hard. A class batsman working hard at his game, a great example to the young uns in the team.

Evening all.
Spent an enjoyable last 90 minutes of the day in the company of AGod.
Seems like I was a lucky charm....Chawla and Barrow batted very sensibly with only the odd false shot.
Had a quick chat with Compo in the nets who was very disappointed with his shot to get out.
At 323-8 I'd say it's honours even, we have fought back well but one boundary can only be 60 yards at most and, for me, the wicket didnt have many gremlins in it.
Our decimated bowling attack will have to bowl out of its skin and would be lovely to get Rogers early.
Good luck tomorrow lads.

I know you know a little more than I do about the seconds but has Lewis been available to bowl most of this season? Not to my recollection but if you know better then he has issues he needs to sort for a first team future.
Adam Dibble has had niggles at important times this season hasn't he or has he been generally fit all season? Again, if that is the case he has competitive issues he has to deal with in the winter to make a long term first team future at this club.
If I'm 'factually incorrect' then both these players have jobs to do to make a name for themselves at Taunton.

Lewis picked up a side strain in a game I was at in the yb40 v middx. He did no bowling till about July. He's bowled quite a bit in the seconds in tha last couple if games with some success prob why he's in here. Dibble has been fit some of the time but injured now and again. He was out all last year.dint know why he's no played more to be honest!!

I've little to add to LoL's post - except that we also enjoyed the company of Bishop Odo (too little of this parish).
I particularly enjoyed some vintage Trescothick shots, some good cover driving from Jones and some clumping shots from Chawla. But I thought that the best innings was played by Alex Barrow, who played beautifully. It was a shame that several batsmen got out to poor shots (Dexter got at least two wickets too many).

Assume that Chawla is known around the circuit as 'PC', and that the announcer got in a muddle.

A Middlesex fan that was sat behind me before I met up with NW5 told me that Dexter often picks up 2 or 3 wickets with the tactics that he used today - gentle swingers wide of off-stump and waiting for the batsman to lose patience. To be honest, neither Compton nor Hildreth can really be said to have faced enough balls from him that 'lost patience', would make sense unless they were on very short fuses.
A lapse in concentration from both, I think.
The one that got Jones looked a better one to me - closer to off-stick and I think it bounced a bit as well as swung.
From an aesthetic point of view then I thought Jones's cover-driving was the highlight of the day.
The biggest shot of the day was a massive six to the long boundary by CK off Rayner. It involved him sashaying down the track as did his subsequent dismissal. But the difference, tactically, is surely that Rayner is an off-spinner whereas Patel, who got CK. is a left-armer whose stock ball will leave CK. If you advance down the track to a ball that is turning into you and miss it, it will probably hit your pads. If it's turning away from you and you miss it......
Pitch not as quick as I hoped it would be. But there was some bounce there which makes George's ommission more annoying as, Jamie apart, he is surely the most likely guy to extract bounce.

Dave Nosworthy also calls him 'P C Chawla', so I think the announcer 'got it right', although if P C is a nickname then it's a little unusual for the PA guy to use it!

I wasn't able to follow the day so didn't catch up until the close of play score. I'd have certainly settled for that- particularly in view of our struggles- and having watched Jones and Barrow at Edgbaston last week I am not surprised at their scores. I would hope for another point but do not expect another 2.

I do not know if it will work, but I’m pretty sure that our tactic vs Surrey and Derbyshire will be to attempt to prepare the sort of bunsens that we produced for Rehman last year (the heavy roller may stop us succeeding this time around).
BUT.. a thought that occurred to me yesterday is that if we do succeed in producing a Bunsen, then an Indian that has batting ability (i.e. PC) will probably be a good guy to BAT on such a track.
With the form of our batsmen this year, I would worry about their batting on a Bunsen but maybe PC can bail us out there too!?

The cricketers actually doing the job don't tend to dwell almost obsessively on the negative aspects of a particular game. They tend to be too busy sort of... well doing the job.

I don't know if he was the last one to do it, but I.T. Botham made 152 batting at 9 against Leicestershire in 1983. I imagine he will be excluded as there was presumably a reason for him batting 9 (i.e. illness or injury)?

Meschede brilliant before tea. Used a cross breeze to devastating effect in swinging the ball.
Ball 32 overs old now and less swing. Meschede just back on and still looking good.
But will need a wkt or two from Chawla to wrap this up.
Pitch itself remains excellent for batting.

Just over 12 months ago the youngsters proved their worth, the club didn't have a choice. Babies in arms need help from the oldies but in every team they bring enthusiasm and spirit. Well done the boys and the oldies today.

I've thought that for a long time that meschede should be a key part in our side in all forms.
However I was more than a little disappointed that Gregory was preferred to Dockrell, I'm glad to see he's more than justified his selection so far.

Today could scarcely have gone better from Somerset's perspective. Chawla and Thomas batted very responsibly to ensure that Somerset posted a formidable first innings score. Chawla, with his high bat-lift, gives the ball a mighty thump when he goes for his shots.
Gregory and Meschede both bowled better than I have previously seen them bowl in a first-class match. In the past, Gregory seems to me to have bowled when two batsmen were well set and the captain had run out of alternatives. Today, he responded really well to opening the bowling. He bowled a good full length, whereas, when I have previously seen him bowl in CC matches, he has tended to bowl too shot. The yorker with which he had Rogers LBW in the second innings was as good as one could hope to see - even though Rogers clearly felt that he had got bat on it. I hope that the confidence which he will surely have gained from his bowling performance will transmit itself to his batting.
Meschede beat the bat countless times and wasn't flattered by his excellent figures.
Chawla, after a steady start, looked a real threat. He is already looking to be a really good signing - well done Dave Nosworthy.
Reverting to the first day, AGod had said, in advance of the match, that he would be amazed if Marcus Trescothick lasted for more than five overs after Rayner (the off-spinner) came on to bowl. What a great team effort. Particularly pleasing that the youngsters in the team have contributed significantly towards what should be an emphatic victory. Barrow and Jones with bat, Gregory and Mesh with ball...well done lads. They are the future, but here they are the 'now ' and I am very proud of how you guys are progressing. Also I must mention PC...brilliant all round display.

If I could just throw in this because I and others have been consistently pleading for us to use the youngsters more. Unfortunately, it is management's conversative nature which means it only ever happens when they are forced into it, because there is no alternative - remember the wonderful performances last season without the stars!

Approach to tomorrow will depend, in part, on the weather, I think.
I'm sure the strongish cross wind helped us to swing the ball far more than Middx managed yesterday.
If the wind is present again tomorrow and the ball swings then we'll probably stay on the attack and hopefully wrap things up within 50 overs or so.
If there's no helpful wind and we can't get it to swing then it may be a case of sitting in, keeping things tight and chipping away with Chawla - and game might well then extend until Saturday.
Meschede was brilliant in their first dig - great line and length and just the right amount of swing.
Jamie was lively and got a bit of swing and dished out a bit of chin-music. Too many no balls, obviously.
Alf was okay - didn't carry huge menace but kept things tight.
Gregory was a surprise with the new ball and pretty good in the first innings, then excellent with it when they followed-on. Very unlucky with a couple of huge in-swingers which somehow missed the stumps as well as the great yorker to dismiss Rogers.
Depending on whether or not it swings tomorrow, then it may be a different kind of test for CM and LG - a test of patience rather than a test of incision.

I was looking at the flag on the stand opposite the mound stand (whatever it is called) which seemed to show it coming across the ground.
Certainly there seemed to be a strong breeze and, as a consequence, it was far less hot up there than yesterday.

Middx fans in the Edrich clearly feel that their batting line-up is clueless vs spin and none more so than Malan.
So, despite the fact that Chawla says there's nothing in the track for spin it will be interesting to see what he can do against their batsmen.

Nope nobody said any of that. Those of us that were not delusional said we were in a relegation battle. We were and we are. And it looks like wsm may well be right about there being a winner in Kennington and so irrespective of the result here we will still be firmly in the battle at the point that our next match starts.
Only way we could decisively end the battle in the right way prior to the final round of games would be to decisively beat both Surrey and Derbyshire - with a wide points margin in those games.

The seconds suddenly started picking up about two months ago and - maybe - that's starting to feed into the firsts with the promotion of some of the guys from the seconds?
It might be that DN is really getting through to the younger players.

Marcus has been catching those going straight to him but have been missing those he has to stretch for.
I couldn't be more pleased that in this match he has been catching all of them the easy and the hard catches, he has also been making some good stops along the ground according to the commentators.

Well when I suggested that I was told I was 'factually incorrect' so it seems that has NOT been the case.
He has been on the 'possibles' so I have to assume he hasn't been showing form that suggested he should become a definite.
He's probably not done his chances any damage this game though. Very pleased to see CM step into the role with Peter sidelined. Though PT hasn't been the revelation he was last year with the ball this season.

We have won a game by an innings and 179 runs in 2 and a half days with what many of us classified as a second string side before it started.

What a terrific 2`1/2 days! Makes selection for Tuesday rather interesting.
Lets hope the weather gives us the chance to get a (hopefully positive) result in the next three! If the weather plays ball, it should be in our hands to put ourselves in a healthier position and dent the hopes of our rivals.

Supposedly the long term forecast for September is excellent.
Team selection will indeed be interesting, Edinburgh.
I still suspect we'll try and go Bunsen as most would fancy George and Chawla vs Ansari and Batty (if he turns up) and our guys vs Wainwright and Wesley (if picked).

Grockle - my answer to your question is that the bowler, in that case, needs to look at doing something different - pitch it up another half yard or attack the stumps (if they miss it then they get bowled or lbw or whatever) you cannot keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect to get different results.

So the failure of the batsman is the fault of the bowler is what you are saying? Batsmen play at the ball, they are tucked up, they waft and fail to connect and that is the failure of the BOWLER'S technique.

It must be a failure of the player because he can't be 'good but unlucky', he has to be substandard because you rate him as such.

Fine bowling by Lewis Gregory, who rounded off the match with a superb yorker (the sort he used to produce in one-day matches before his injury), which was wasted on a No 11 (not that I am complaining).
The other bowlers all bowled well, with Jove producing a devastating yorker to clean up Berg.
Excellent catching by Marcus Trescothick , one of his catches being superb.
The side was well led by MT and the team spirit shone through.

As for next match, we are without George with Ireland and Jove together with Jos in England 50 overs team. There is also talk on Cricinfo of Alfonso playing for someone in CLT20 whenever that starts. So we could need Steve K Peter T or Adam D dependent on their fitness/recovery from illness.

I have seen results in three of the four-day matches I planned to watch this season. One ended in defeat in a day in a half, another in defeat in two days and a half, and now a quite glorious victory in two days and a half. That means I've seen six and a half out of a possible twelve days - but there is clearly an upward trend.
The most I hoped for from the Middlesex match was in the region of two batting and three bowling points and three for a draw. 23 is a lot more than eight!
Today was another great day in good company - and I am sure it has demonstrated to the team that winning at Lord's can be quite easy. I had advised Trescothick to start the afternoon session with Gregory, though I am not sure he heard me from the Edrich Stand. But he got everything right and today's champagne moment for me was seeing the skipper raise the ball to the crowd after taking five catches. I think it was MikeTA1 who hinted that MT's ability to take catches away frcom his body is not what it was. I know Mike has watched much more cricket than me and I respect his opinion L, but I am sure he would have enjoyed our delight at Lord's in watching eight horizontal feet of Trescothick hurling himself in successful pursuit of the ball. Truly awesome.
And I join in the universal delight for Gregory.

Again if they wanted a seamer I think Gregory was the last man standing - as Old Boy suggests it was forced on them.
Where the credit is due is to Tres (or whomever else was involved) that seemed to have decided 'if we're going to pick him let's give him a role that suggests we have genuine faith in him.'

It's not a matter of vultures. It's a matter of assessing the play.
Our bowling was brilliant yesterday and sounds like it was very good again today.
Our second session batting on day one was very poor indeed. Subsequent events have not changed my view on that - because Middx did not bowl remotely as well in that session as we bowled in knocking their guys over. Therefore that session was a case of average bowling vs poor batting.
Suffice to say that if our batsmen had faced bowling of the quality that WE produced with the ball, then a collapse of the order of six wickets for about 90 runs would have made sense/been justified.
There remain issues with the bat. With the bowling it's a question of whether CM/LG can/will repeat bowling of that quality in the remaining CC matches.
As an aside Lewis did not bowl very well at Bristol - BUT we all remember that before his back injury he was a dangerous one-day bowler. Armed with fresh confidence, one wonders what he might be able to do vs Notts in the semi...
p.s Re:Alf I assume the CLT20 rumour relates to his domestic team from SA? If not I think there's zero chance of us releasing him to play for an IPL team as I believe him not playing IPL was a condition of his new deal? It would be far from ideal if he took himself off - particularly in respect of Pro 40 as he seems to have regained something like his best one-day form.

In terms of using him as a new ball bowler they'd shown zero previous sign of it in the CC - don't think he'd ever been used as more than second change before?
Bumping Alf up to new ball would have been the obvious move but going the other way proved a master-stroke.

It may not be a matter of 'vultures; to you AG but you aren't the only one ripping the club apart after every minute activity and they aren't all as logical and as 'finger on the pulse' as you believe you are.

Alf's team the Titans have qualified for the CLT20 having been runners-up in the South African T20 competition. Alf didn't play in the final though, returning to the UK for the start of Somerset's season.
Titans first match in the CLT20 is on the 22 September.

Sorry, Grockle, but I'm sure that most coaches would accept that a key part of their job is instilling belief in their players. And there many ways to do that...one is to thrust unexpected (in his case unprecedented) levels of responsibility onto them.
Given that Lewis had previously taken 12 wickets in 12 matches then I'd say the move worked a treat, wouldn't you?

Congratulations to everyone concerned at Lord's.
It was a great team effort, so very well done. I regret that I was unable to get to HQ to enjoy some of it at first hand, but had to content myself by visiting the birthplace of Somerset CCC.
That proved to be a success as well.

I think those of us of a certain age remember how it is in the twilight of your career. You know exactly what needs to be done, but hard as you try it is isn't necessarily all there as it was a few moons ago.
You want to put in that extra ball with the special uumph but you are now best with the slower version! Steve is a good talker (to himself and others) but unfortunately very often himself can't deliver what his voice is telling him he must do!
IMO he still has many qualities, but the essential one giving the extra bit of beef to the bowling, is really only available to the younger guys. Steve's advantage is that his old body is not prone to so many niggling strains etc as those suffered by younger still growing bodies.
I am sure his future is in passing on his considerable knowledge as the much needed bowling coach (or maybe he has already started!).

Steve has developed as a bowler, every year of his Somerset career and he has kept us going in more than game this year when we've been abject. You are right about beef OB but our fastest bowler is not YET our best bowler and Adam has NO CC1 experience this year at all.
Take the chance on him by all means but please don't infer he is a better bowler than Kirby in a last ditch CC1 game we need to win yet. The only heart I've seen at times in some of these games came from Tango and in case people have forgotten, the club haven't yet given up on Kirby even if some here seem have done.

Lets not hype this up to much, we all know bowlers need the correct conditions and the correct type of pitch to suit their bowling.
The Lords pitch was the correct type for our bowlers for this match, the ball was moving around that doesn't often happen at Taunton.
I hope they do have the same success on other pitch for the rest of the season but don't expect it every time.

Still think we'll try to prepare two very dry turners for our final two games.
Every chance that we won't be able to get it to swing around as much as at Lord's. Every chance that Piyush and George will be the key figures.
If it's a very dry pitch it might make little difference whether Pete and Kirby return instead of Gregory or Craig M or not.

I agree with this. I am very happy with the contributions of Lewis, Craig and Jamie at Lords and it does feel like a bit of a watershed moment for us regarding our future but they are all works in progress and will need to be nurtured. It has also to be conceded that Middlesex contributed to their own downfall and the trio never had their backs against the wall for any significant length of time. Kirby, Trego and Alfie still have much to offer next season. The first two are capable of giving us real control and bowl with a discipline that none of the younger bucks yet have. Alfie is capable of lethal spells of reverse swing when conditions are right. All 6 pace bowlers mentioned plus Dibble can all be vital ingredients for our future, it is a case of getting the recipe right for each particular match. I think we need to back George next season. Give him a proper run of matches and if we're serious about challenging in the longer form, invest in an international strike bowler to give us that little bit of extra penetration that we'll need on a flat deck.

Well they've given both a contract so they must see something in Adam. Go with Kirby by all means but to me he has developed more as a one day bowler but in cc has little penetration now. He snarls a lot and winds up the players yeah but he's in there to get damn wickets!! And he's 36 trego will be 33 and alf is 37 next year. We need younger bowlers in there. Use him yes but not to thevextentbif giving younger bowlers a go. It's got to be the way forward for us!!

Grockle, Kirby was injured at Bristol, last Sunday. He dived to stop the ball and seemed to have pulled a muscle around the lumbar region (or somewhere close)
