Damn or Blast? The T20 is upon us
By Grockle et al
May 15 2014
Like it or not the new (well revamped) T20 tournament is upon us - Natwest Blast. New names, redesigned 'razzamataz', new time slot. It could be an area where we may see the glint of silver this year and our involvement starts with Gloucestershire on Friday. If you are one of those who doesn't like this format, at least there is other stuff at the same time this year.
NatWest Blast
The Natwest Blast may be more of a hope for a trophy this season than the Championship and if not it is a good chance to iron out the kinks for the 50 over competition later in the season where we do have a significant chance of something.
Despite the inevitable commments about how we will miss Jos Buttler from the line-up, our batting really does not suffer from his absence, except on the occasion where a devastating player can take a T20 game by the scruff, that happens but we have other candidates for that honour still in the maroon and black AND here for most of the games.
Marcus must be excited about the inclusion in his Blast squad of Dirk Nannes, maybe not for his pace any more but for his T20 experience and 'nounce' but others in the squad must see this as their forte. Max Waller has already tweeted about being ready for this part of the season and our allrounders must see this as an early area for their particular skills. In Max's case, his performances here, may very well outline his whole season
Looking at the possible line-up for the first couple of games does suggest the skippper may be spoilt for choice and some of the main squad may find it hard to get a berth and keep it as the 'youngsters' look to make their mark. Aliviro Petersen and Nick Compton may very well sit these games out unless injury or poor form brings them into contention. The front end must include Marcus opening with Craig Kieswetter (a travesty in my own personal eyes that he is not included in ether of the England short form squads) Peter Trego will also move up the order and join James Hildreth (with something to prove himself to keep his place) in the middle order. Lewis Gregory, the returning Craig Meschede and Craig Overton must be looking to take their places in this part of the side as well. I personally don't see Chris Jones out of this picture either as he performed very well in this format last season when others struggled. Max Waller seems to be the short form spinner to turn to but George Dockrell is massively experienced for one of his age in this format. Max has developed the extra batting credits to his name now however as we advised him to and Ireland may want too much of George's time in the next month.
The bowling is packed but some options ought to be avoided. Personally I don't think this format is Jamie Overton's and Dirk is the better pace option. Alf has a great reputation in this type of game but is he still that bowler? I'm sure he will start but we may have to wait and see how his T20 season finishes. Steve Kirby may be looking to get his first action with the county this season in these games, a type of game where he has become more effective over his time with the county. Maybe even Adam Dibble might be in contention and Alex Barrow will also be waiting for any slip from others to show his batting prowess which has been considerable with the seconds in the last month.
Another factor I completely missed out of my earlier analysis is the role of Johann Myburgh in our campaign. I have to admit I expected him to be a 'bit player' mostly operating as a backup batsman and seconds mentor for the season but he seems to have taken to his new role in a far more hands on mannner and has been a significant player in our early CC1 work. His batting and his occcasional spin bowling have been very useful and there is no reason why they shouldn't figure in the T20 campaign in the same way. One would suggest that he is a definite candidate for the middle orderof our first games.
It will be interesting how we approach the early games. 'Pace off the ball' has certainly become the order of the day in T20 along with 'going for it' in the first 6 overs. Marcus set a '50 plus off the first 6' target last year and indications seem to be that we are in better shape to work on that this year than in 2013. The Bristolians will find out on Friday and I'm sure people will tell us all about it tomorrow.
v GLOUCESTERSHIRE @ Bristol Friday 16 May 2014
TUNE IN LIVE EVENT 10
No Meschede or Myburgh. Instead both Compton and Petersen play. The Bristolians have won the toss and put us in and they will face;
Trescothick, Kieswetter, Trego, Petersen, Hildreth, Compton, Gregory, Waller, Thomas, Dockrell and Nannes
A longish tail in the sense that we have an untried bat at number 8, though he has shown he knows which way to hold it and Alf at 9. Surprised not to see Craig Overton in but he may be carrying a niggle and the other Craig is obviously not yet match fit. The top six does alloww us to adapt our line-up to the situation during the first 10 and it is still a strong line-up though the best in a T20 situation? Well there will be debate, especially if the batting total stalls or fails to fire. However. let battle commence.
Banger banged out first ball to a short one he simply guided into the hands of the leg fielder from Fuller. Oh dear, not the start the club wanted to the new revamped T20 competition. 50 for 2 after 6 with Peter Trego caught behind at 13 and Alviro helping Craig sort out the damage.
Cricinfo is a waste of time as it sticks at 11.4 overs while the radio akes us into the 17th. Alviro showed more competency at this cgame than I gave him credit for, taking the side to 72 off 10 and then opening up to take us to 3 figures before going just after his 50. Hildreth comes in but makes little headway before dollying one off Fuller to be his third victim off the first ball of an over, Nick Compton adds to his tally by going first ball giving Fuller 4 for 15. Lewis supports Craig K past 50 off 43 balls and we move towards something around 150. 143 for 5 at the start of the 19th. Lewis hits a six to take us past 150 and we take it to 154 with 6 balls to go. Par on this pitch is supposedly about 170 and we have underperformed with the bat I am afraid.
Craig is caught at short fine leg first ball of the last over leaving Lewis to do what he can. Cricinfo is now stating that we are 51 for 2 off 11(what a waste of time). Lewis looks to reverse sweep and is out without really changing the score and Waller with Alf can do little but add the odd single. 156 for 8 and a farce of a final over!!
So Somerset need a good bowling performance and it isn't helped by some sloppy fielding in the first over including a 'dolly' catch dropped by one of the best slipfielders n the game Mr Trescothick. Alf also worries his supporters by going for 13 off his first as Glos go to 19 off 2. Then Nannes opens his account as Dent is caught down the leg side at the start of his second. Lewis takes the third and clears out Klinger and Gidman in his first. Pete gets into the game as he takes out Cockbain before Mighty Max starts his series, catching and bowling Howell before having Roderick plumb in front. 84 for 6 with Marshall trying to take his county home almost single handed in what is looking more and more like a wasted effort.
It is more a case of the home side helping us to a victory rather than us really pushing them. The fielding is lazy and the shots are a little amateurish. Hamish Marshall is the only worry as he passes 50 and takes Glos past 100. There are 6 and a bit overs to go and only about 50 to get so the bowlers need to get the man out. Waller does the business and has Marshall in froont sweeping. Well done to the Somerset spinner. 104 for 7
Although the tail gets them close, the experience of the Somerset men at the end keeps it in check and they are all out for 138, Nannes 4 for 28 was the standout man but well done also to Max Waller who did that thing he does and took the important men out when it was required. 2 points and we're off.
V SURREY @Taunton Sunday 18 May 2014
TUNE IN LIVE EVENT 9
Sunday at home and a side picked from the same squad as on Friday. Presently there are no predicted changes.
Somerset won the toss and decided to chase at home once again. It seems to be a strategy they are following at home. We shall see if it is a good strategy.
Despite the early wicket of Smith, decieved by a slow one from Lewis Gregory, the Surrey men went off at about 10 an over with Alf, Lewis and Max getting early hammer. The 50 came up in the 6th and then George got murdered in the 8th and went for 17. 8 overs and 84 on the board. It's a flat deck with little for the spinners and nothing for anyone considering a short ball except a boundary.
Max did well to keep his four down to 29 with loads of variation but Roy had 50 off 33 and was still looking to get on with the game as the 13th over ended with 116 for 2 to Surrey. George got some tap but came back and got Davies in his second. His third went for 4 so he pulled it back to acceptable. Nevertheless the 14th went to Lewis with a predicted score of 190 and with his control needing some work today. Nevertheless George finished with a wicket and 36 to his name and then Lewis came in for his fourth and got O'Brien swiping and losing his off stump 136 for 4. In came Mahmoud. Gregory pulled it back with a wicket and 2 runs. 2 for 34 but he bowled 12 dots out of his 24.
So Nannes and Thommo looked to finish off with 137 for 4 and as many overs to go as wickets lost. The pace was something the becalmed Roy should have liked but we had pulled the run rate under 9 and hope to move it further that way. Dirk went for 17 off the 17th and Surrey passed 150 but Alf showed the old T20 nounce. 3 runs off four balls before Roy tried to go over the top and was picked up goalkeeper style by Max. 157 for 5 and Thommo finished with a single. Nannes was going for 11 an over but still took the 19th. The Somerset fielding has been very good overall - a real change from the Bristol game with James Hildreth and Max Waller standing out particularly. Peterson got frustrated and smaced the ball to Gregory 160 for 6. That made his 42 runs a little better because of the wicket. So Alf took last one and tied them down once again and ran out a Suurrey batsman offf the final ball. 173 for 7 was a good second half for the Somerset bowlers. The prediction was over 200 at one time but partly because of Alf's 1 for 27 we pulled them back to something we can make a go for.
Now I could take you through the Somerset batting performance. I could describe the daft run out of the skipper who couldn't turn fast enough when mistaking the situation. I could talk about Pete's miscued straight drive which was well caught by Ansari. Craig's 10 overs of exciting batting which gave him a 50 off 32 balls ended when the middle order tried too damned hard to score a mediocre total. Alviro tried for a six, Craig tried for a six. James tried for the clever flick and missed. Nick looking like a fish out of water tried for a six and they all left Alf and Lewis to try and score about 15 to 20 an over. They had a good try but Lewis ended needing a runner, Jade bowled one of his good last overs, we failed to pass their total and Michael Vaughan called us 'Cidermen'. We failed, they won and the first 'if only Jos Buttler had been here' arrived. Ho Hum.

All other first-choice batsmen played so I'd be surprised if he was simply rested. And, presumably, it would be a considerable surprise if he is not in our first-team plans.
The first warm-up game, which looked like a possible full strength SCCC team (apart from AP) went as well as it probably should do vs Warks second XI.
However, in the second game, a near first-choice batting line-up and non first-choice bowling line-up were held to a tie by said Warks second XI which is possibly a little bit embarrassing.
I think Alf alludes to this in the story on the official website, when he says that we may have to rely more on our bowling than in the past, as we no longer have an explosive finisher in the line-up.
I'm not really sure, though, about Alf's contention that we are now stronger (than in the past) in bowling for this form of the game? We've got Nannes, but then last year we had Arafat who was pretty good. Maybe Alf feels that Nannes is better than Arafat?
I'd think that Lewis Gregory may now revert to being the kind of key one-day bowler that he was in his first couple of years (given the fact that his tail must be very much up at the moment).
So, Alf, Nannes and Gregory will probably be the three seamers from whom Marcus will be expecting 12 overs every week. Pete will fill in here and there. Once fit, Meschede will presumably crack the line-up. Until then Myburgh and Waller or Dockrell will probably be providing most of the other 8 overs with the ball, I would think?
As and when Kirby is fit, then he may come into the picture, possibly spelling Alf at times.
I loved the idea that the team that played in the first of yesterday's T20 games against Warwickshire was Somerset 2nd XI.
The first team must be quite something and would clearly win the IPL at a canter.
If you buy 5 or more tickets only £10 each which is a great offer, otherwise £15 in advance and £2o on the gate.
In short form I'd rather go for Jones if we are a batsman short. He plays the technical game but he scores quickly with a stroke player at the other end.

Will Gidman, the county`s leading all-rounder in 2013, and Ian Saxelby, who missed most of last season through injury, are definitely out.
Never mind the fact that that is how their "customers" want the "product" delivered: and never mind the fact that a proper cricketer should still be able to succeed in any format by playing proper cricket.
Ho hum!!!
He added "I think I've earned the right to bat at five," which seemed, to me, to have missed the point completely.
Its £25 on gate, £20 in advance or £15 if in block of 5, clearly we are the big draw so trying to fleece all non members, can't blame them I guess.
Reports of an expected 6,500 crowdm capacity is around 7,500 currently, new mound stand set to be open too, see you all there.....

Grow a pair and get on with it Joseph. It is, after all, what you chose to do and are lucky enough to be talented enough to get paid for.
Or am I being unfair? It has been known.

Nick? Nah, if he was going to develop a change of gears I think he would have done it by now though he has surprised me personally more than once with a glimpse of the expansive Compo. Still don't expect it though and spend more times shouting "get on or get out" to 'The Stickler"

I'd give serious thought to asking Pete to be flexible.
If a wicket falls in the opening power-play, he goes in at three.
If Marcus/CK get us through the first six overs without incident, then we could consider then using Pete in a "go in as soon as a wicket falls after over y," scenario.
So, for example, if no wickets are down after six overs, then Pete would be next man in at any point after, say, over 12.
And Gregory does seem to have been playing more expansively, so he's an interesting suggestion from Grockle. If he made a success of the role it could further boost his CC batting (due to further increased confidence).
Equally, I wonder what role (other than as a bowler) Myburgh is seen as filling? Maybe Nos has him ear-marked for a finisher type role?
Max or George?
No overtons?
And Two from Alviro/Compo and Myburgh?
Whichever way looks strong on paper.
Some idiot always comes on and says that cricket is played on grass not paper. Oh...

They reckon par is 170 so we have underperformed

If it stays that way I'll update the frontpage when I can.
I can tell you that Nannes has hit Klinger with his first ball. But Banger has missed a dolly at slip!!

Quote:Why is Marcus fielding at first slip when he doesn't in the CC?
It's like club cricket - he's hiding himself!
Congratulations to Somerset
We didn't really win this in style. Glos batsmen gave it to us in many ways but points is points

As much as I like Compo, I feel it not his game, 50 over maybe yes, but not T20 stuff.
So Craig Meschede in for Nick, just feel he give us a bowling option, and a good striker of the ball.
Bowling was good by all give or take a bad over now and again. Dirk is fast and hits top of off.. You could see that Glos were genuinely shocked at his pace. Should have been 0-2 in his first over. Great catches by George (absolute stunner) and Compton in LGs first over made it uphil for Glos there after.
For all the good aspects of tonight my evening was overshadowed by some awful morons who clearly out of their skulls shouted and balled all game. Homophobic stuff aimed at AP and even abusing a father with a ginger child. Stewards? Nowhere to be seen and this itself a pain. The new stands have walkways at front and nobody stopping people walking past during overs.
Not that impressed with the new stands. No catering or WC facilities in any of them. In fact there was a total of 2 hot dog stands and a burger van in the entire ground. Next time the CEO moans about lack of revenues he'd do well to look at employing more caterers and better stewarding.

Kiesy and AP were excellent, Alviro is a really underated 20-20 player I feel, he's class.
Nannes was good, Max too, Tres had a stinker, out first ball, dropped a sitter at slip and few dodgy fielding moments. Saying that if we can win with him having a poor night we'll be far stronger when he fires.
Have to agree re Nick, as much as I like him he has no place in our line up as it stands. Our top 5 look really strong and he shouldn't displace any of them, and he isn't suited to 6-7-8 coming in with last few overs to come.
Myburgh, Cove, Mesch depwending on surface all a better option for me.
Have to say I liked the ground work, I've often slated Bristol for being a dump but all their work has had big effect.
Decent crowd without being packed. I'm told the capacity now is 7500, so I'd guess 5500/5750 in tonight.

Game wasn't at Taunton FE !!
Good point: well made!
I'll try and keep up!

Until I saw that our old friend Yasir hit the last two balls - the only ones he received - to the boundary to see Sussex to an unlikely two wicket win over Surrey. Jade Dernbach needed to defend 16 runs in that over, but despite two singles and a wicket, he still managed to concede exactly that number.
Our new scoreboard tell us the cut off time of the innings and it also tell us the run rate required, that we have never had before.
Alf at the front end still worries me but he seems to have weighed in with experience in the last overs.

He had little chance in the two warm-up matches to bat, the first match he didn't bat and in the second match he came in at the end of the innings when the RR had slowed down, he hit the first ball he received for a four and only faced seven ball for eight runs.
The two I am keeping an eye on is Peter Trego and James Hildreth, it is to early to judge anybody yet.
Quote:nelliec
Does anyone know why Cricinfo are showing Gloucester as -2 points.Did they incur a penalty last year
Poor pitch at Cheltenham
Dirk Nannes has a second vital job at the club now. Teach Jove control AND speed. He could be as inspired a pickup as Yasir was last year.

Sorry to hear that re boorish behaviour. We will have a word with Glos.
I think in a way it comes from the excellent staff at Taunton and becoming used to it as the norm. I have no doubt at Taunton the individuals would have been first warned to tone it down and then removed.
By all accounts it's always a slightly different crowd at Bristol - combined with good weather and being a friday it was probably a particularly 'rowdy' one.
They could also learn a trick by visiting Taunton and seeing the catering facilities. Something vastly lacking in an otherwise superb looking ground now...
Quote:Mike TA1
I am not ready to dismiss Nick Compton as a one day player yet, as Grockle said one ball is no way to judge him.
Aside from his batting its worth remembering Nick is an outstanding fielder and he was absolutely superb at backward point last night - diving around saving a fair few runs.
Hildreth certainly seems out of form with the bat and I agree if you are going to single out Nick then it's a bit unfair as there are others who are failing in all forms of the game.
Disappointed with GD a bit last night, didn't seem to get his length quite right. He's not really progressing from the chap who pretty much won us the first CC game of the season two seasons ago. You'd have thought by now he'd have been our first choice spinner and yet we've had to draft in overseas and now a part timer. Would be great to see Max step up.. maybe if he proves himself in the slightly longer 50 over game he might get a chance?
No different to what I have seen at Taunton for limited overs matches.
Stewards were stopping people coming in to stands until the end of the over. But if people come out of their seats during the over, what can you do about that.
But remember this is BLAST cricket, not 4 day first class cricket.

Far worse behaviour than I've seen previously. I like an atmosphere at the shorter form but when it's resorting to calling our players stuff like 'Bedwetter' and shouting out to Alvro that he 'likes it up the @#$%&' I draw a line. When this delightful soul behind then shouted out 'hahah ginger child' do a man carrying his fairly young baby I was pretty much disgusted.
Maybe we picked the wrong part of the ground as there we no stewards stopping anyone walking in or out of the stands during the game. They'd have been better off stopping the front walkway being used and making people come down from the top entrances.
He has been added to the Surrey spinning ranks as Zafar Ansari has a damaged elbow and Gareth Batty a broken finger.

Pleased to see Maxie is performing well again.

I can't think that Alf is an ideal number 8 in one-day cricket so Myburgh or, if fit, Meschede for Dockrell would be the obvious way to not have Alf as high as 8.
I think this was the first time we'd picked GD for a T20 for some while - I suspect we were expecting a very slow pitch at Bristol and so it was a horses for courses type pick.
The traffic jams have been very bad all week, it may not be so bad on a Sunday!

I trust that my hero will be on song!
Ambitious given our recent history with scoreboards but very sensible if we have the capacity to do so.
For today as sky are coming with own screen there is no need, watch this space.....
Is it a fine weather day down there, Mike?
CR, Wow, I couldn't stand for any length of time let alone hours.
I feel sorry for them.
As for Middx, I assume the move was a commercial experiment. Commercially I suspect it's quite a good idea and probably worked well for them.
Clearly though, as you say, it may be tough to pick themselves up after two defeats in one day.
It doesn't seem to be in their listings for today, though?
Sky Sports 2 from 2pm.
For instance, 2,000 spectators at Uxbridge is apparently better financially than 8,000 at Lords.
Edit to add- Surrey are charging Middlesex £80,000 to host the T20 v Somerset (plus I think they want half the gate money) Again, this is considered a cheaper option than Lords (who weren't in a position to host anyway).

If so, perhaps they should once again consider re - locating elsewhere.
Unchanged side for us, so it looks like we have had a re-think from recent practice and are probably intending to go with two front-line spinners as a regular option in our T20 side.

Yesterday I think it was a 10,000 crowd- but of course clashing with FA cup Final, and being on tv, may have reduced the attendance.

If Nannes is going to bowl to Smith, I hope he pitches it right up, because otherwise I think that pace will just feed the pull and the cut and be right up Smith's street.

We need a couple of quick wickets or will face a very large chase indeed.

LoL
Sixty-six Seasons a Somerset Supporter
Well George would be because he takes number 2 95 for 2.
Give up your day job Michael.

Compo was giving it the 'we need more wickets,' refrain and that's certainly usually right. It does rather strike me, though, that, at the minute, they've got a very good platform for Mahmood.
It might not be a bad thing if Mahmood never gets in!
No full tosses and only one really short ball.

Now, can Alf and Nannes hold them down to under 180?
Overall, I think we bowled too many wides in their innings.
And although they got far fewer than seemed probable at one time, I would guess that we'll still have a tough run chase ahead of us.

Of course, that would mean somebody else needs to step up in the first power-play.
No Peter T today - may have got a little closer than Dirk at some point.
Max looks like he has far more confidence and what a fielder he is.

Waller used the crease very well indeed and relied less than in the past on use of a regular googly.

Waller's fine day continues.

calm down lads!!
Something that could apply all round.
Will probably be down to these two to try and take it home from here.

Bowled too many wides and four balls and then not enough support for CK with the bat.

NC did his best and tried to score quickly but, really, he looked like a fish out of water playing those shots.
Whenever this has happened in the past Jos has gone the way of the rest. The only reason we have no power at the end is that Craig M is injured.
But keep up the Buttler myth - he's a decent scapegoat for a poor batting performance.

Oh and for our Buttlerites. Jos would have been in in this side in the first 6 so he would have won it by now and we wouldn't have had to worry about anyone else.

They'll not get 18 even off Jade.

You're not going to win too many games, even in T20, with only 3 or 4 players really turning up.

Craig Meschede is a loss at the end of the line-up and they have to develop Craig Overton to contribute in this format with bat and ball. Nick is NOT a T20 player.
Silly run out, miscued Trego attempt at a straight drive, daft flip when it wasn't needed, two attempts to get six when two would have done and a few too many at the start of their innings though the bowlers did pull it back while the batsmen simply didn't.

I don't know what sort of track record he has in other short form games, but the man should have the levers to hit the ball a substantial distance.
They'll definitely have to get Mesch back in for future games, though if Gregory's out for a while then that may be just one step forward and then one back.
I'd have thought Myburgh and Meschede should probably both come in and (if Gregory is injured) then Craig Overton should come in too.

Back tomorrow for the real stuff !!
Although he's a gritty batsman, I wonder whether we would be better of without him in T20, as it just puts pressure on others.
Wouldn't Trigger be better at No. 6 ?
Grizzzly
To be honest, we're a little bit short with the batting, partly due to Craig M being injured, partly due to no like for like replacement for Buttler, partly due to Hildreth not really being in much form.
Of more concern than anything else, though, was the injury to Gregory which was precisely what we did not need in CC terms.
Grizzzly
Could rock up ok tomorrow with ice etc, but probably not.
Grizzzly
Hopefully, Meschede may be fit to resume in his place. If not, then Craig Overton will, presumably, get the call, unless we want to go with a specialist spinner.
GD did not do himself many favours today, if they do want to go with a specialist spinner.
Alternatively, if SCCC are feeling brave and the Durham attack is particularly depleted, then I suppose we might just re-jig things and pick one fewer batsman so that both a specialist spinner and a more direct replacement for Gregory can come into the XI?
Fairly poor day all round, and i feel CK must take at least a share of the blame, stopped playing shots and allowed himself to become becalmed from about 8 overs and began putting pressure on the other batters.
Like it or not of course we miss Jos, any team would. I'm not saying him not being there cost us the game but he offers that chance of confidently chasing say 50 off 5 at death.
I'm sorry but Nicky, Lewis and Alfie at 6/7/8 just isn't going to chase 50 off 5 very often.
Sinilarly it wasn't Nick's fault we lost but batting at 6 in a T20 game just isn't him.
Craig M definitely could be the answer, and maybe Cove too but not Nick.
Real shame to see Lewis crocked, I'm no doctor but it looked bad, it was no tweak, he was struggling to even hobble let alone walk. You could tell he knew it was bad as he slammed bat on floor a few times at non strikers end in pure frustration at what had happened to him. I'd be as pessimistic as mid July/August, lets wait for the report but definitely can't see him playing again in near future.
Really lovely day and great crowd. So much better than Friday, no sign of any trouble, no Mexican waves, crowd was controlled so as to not get in the way of watching overs.
Small band did a bit of pre match music, that was well appreciated.
Would like to think we'd play a spinner tomorrow but we seem naturally very negative this year in selection so would expect normal top 8, with Alfie, Jove and Mesch/Cove as the extra 3 bowlers. Personally I'd have George in for Jones, harsh on Jones but we need to try somehow to get 20 wickets at home.....
Craig K. 61 Off 47 balls
Cannot agree with your last paragraph Railboy.
He just rotated which maybe got the rate up too high but can't blame him for that.
2 matches and he has top scored in both, we just need to build more partnerships, another 2/3 overs of AP and Craig today then rate may have been more manageable when Hildy and Compo came in.
Think we need to accept that without Jos we can't let teams get 175/180+ and be super confident of chasing it down.
If we are going to stick to trying to chase then we need to find a way of keeping scores to 160ish and then get a good start in reply above the rate.
I didn't feel very confident, at the half-way stage, of a run chase with a 6,7, 8 of NC, Gregory and Alf. Or at least, I thought to myself that the top four would probably have to get us home.
Hildy is vice captain so see no possibility we will consider dropping him.
As Jones is opener I think we have decided that's the way we want to go. Of course we could move AP or Compo up and shift rest up 1 but I'm not sure the powers that be are keen on that.
Long long way to go in T20, there are 2 groups, of which each team plays 14 games, top 4 out of 9 will qualify so can probably afford to lose 5 maybe even 6 and scrape through.
We are still a very good T20 side but in the past I feel we have been the best in the country, when we lost it was our fault, as we hadn't played to our potential.
Now I think even at our best we can't guarantee to win.
We are good enough to beat anyone on our day but I think we have lost our invincibility in the T20 form.
If we win 9 and lose 5 I think that'll be a fair reflection and see us qualify comfortably.
In my eyes we are quite easily in the top 4 best teams in this group.
Obviously we may not qualify and I certainly would put my house on us winning the cup but we are definitely one of the best 4 teams on paper in our group.
Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire are decent but we have to be hoping to be beating Glos, Mid'x, Glam, Kent and Essex.
There are not many teams who will look at our team and be confident of beating us, up to us to do the business on the park.
A new position for me today on the roof of the OP. I will leave you lot to comment on today's play.
The day started with skydivers this is the plane they fell out of.
And this is one of the skydivers coming down.
And there he is about to touch down.
Alviro Petersen catching Graeme Smith off Lewis Gregory.
This ball to Gary Wilson was called a wide off Lewis Gregory, I have my own opinion on that decision.
I would have like to have seen more balls pitch up like this one from Lewis Gregory that bowled Kevin O'Brien.
How dare that man Robin Peterson sweep Alfonso Thomas he hasn't even got his name on his back.
Somebody tell Azhar Mahmood he is purpose to hit the ball.
It looks like the only man that can give us the sort on innings we needed now Jos Buttler is gone is Craig Kieswetter that was a big six into the flats.
If somebody was going to get out playing that shot like that it will be James Hildreth bowled by Tom Curran.
I still think Nick Compton has a place in the one day side but batting further up the order, he was almost caught by Gary Wilson in this photo.
Kevin O'Brien about to catch Craig Kieswetter off the bowling of Zafar Ansari.
This Lewis Gregory injury looks bad he found it hard to walk to square leg.
Yes it is sarcastic but get real. He is no more available than Ian Blackwell who it seems did the same after he left but crumbled usually with the rest when these kind of games went on in reality. Jos' reality is somewhat similar.
We were a batsman short last night and played Nick instead, a man not naturally gifted to be in a T20 side. The missing Somerset batsman's name was either Craig Meschede or Johan Myburgh. Sorry to break it to some of you but Jos doesn't live here any more, he chose to leave the county for pastures new.
Jos MIGHT have made a difference last night at number 5 where he usually played in these games but he was as likely to play all round a straight one as smack it into Priory Road and did exactly that in my own recollection from last year on different occasions.
Pete, Alviro, James, Craig and Nick got it wrong last night and left it to the tail with too much to do.
Had Mesch been coming in to work with Lewis it might have been different but we had ample talent on the pitch to score 180. They simply didn't do it and hoping an angel from Lancashire had floated down to save us is nothing but wishful thinking. He didn't manage it last year as often as not so why would he have suddenly changed?
You can't always get what you want and that grass is always greener on the other side and so forth. Don't worry it gets easier and you WILL get over it. The "Ians" did a few years ago now - but on reflection it did take a while so it may get harder before it gets easier.
I suppose there is the one day loss Jos would have won for us yet to come and the CC1 game where he would have provided the winning contribution but then the pain will ease hopefully.
Who knows by the time we're over him he might even be back... it has happened before.

I think we fielded first not because we thought we were going to tear into them with the new ball but because Marcus probably realised that we don't have the batting power of old. Certainly Alf made a comment to that effect (about our balance between our T20 batting and bowling) before the T20 campaign began.
However, in most away games, unless the track is starting damp, then I would certainly prefer Somerset to bat first.

I don't really think they are though. I don't know where, or in what context, the 300 comment came but I wouldn't be surprised if it was some T20 publicity/marketing puffery.

In all reality it is near enough impossible. Its 15 per over, so if one "only" goes for 10 you need a 20 to make it up.
Its just bonkers, you'd need for example your top 3 all to score 100 off 40 balls.
I do think 250/260 could be done but 300 really is out of reach, it was just a interview trying to promote the Natwest Blast, I don't think he had sat down and really calculated the possibility of what he was saying.

I'd quite like to compile a list of our T20 results over, say, the last 5 years and see how often we've chased down v defended.
Since the beginning of 2009, Somerset have won 19/31 (61%) of T20s in which they batted first and 29/50 (58%) in which they chased. No different, then.
Interestingly, though, Somerset have won 19/38 (50%) of games in which they won the toss and 29/43 (67%) of games in which they lost the toss.
More particularly, Somerset have won 4/15 (27%) of games in which Marcus Trescothick won the toss and 21/28 (75%) in which Marcus Trescothick lost the toss.
And, at Taunton, Trescothick has won the toss on only 4/17 occasions. But that's probably as well, since Somerset have won 1/4 (25%) of those games and 11/13 (85%) in which he lost the toss.
Perhaps our batsmen struggle under the pressure when we decide to bat first and our bowlers struggle with expectation when we insert!?
Some would say the figures imply that Tres consistently makes the wrong decision but, if so, they surely imply the same about the opposing skipper!? Although it looks as though other SCCC captains (presumably mainly Alf) have won 15 of the 23 games in which they won the toss i.e just under 60 percent. So perhaps Alf is the only man in the land that can get it right!!?
i suppose that, at 43 games the Tresco sample size is still relatively small and the other captains one smaller still.... It will be interesting to see how this goes for the remainder of this campaign.
Thanks Keith's.
There is also the other possibility that wining or losing the toss has little significant difference on the outcome of the game and the stats have no correlation to anything at all.

Basically, it's all toss!

Obviously, if the toss makes little overall difference then, over time, one would expect the figures (for an average T20 side) to move towards a 50% win rate for the side that wins the loss (and loses the toss).
Of course, since 2009 Somerset have, surely, been an above average T20 side as well, which makes the 73% loss rate when Tres wins the toss all the more startling.

Ten of the team from the Bristol match are named, with batsman Alex Blake, who scored useful runs in a recent friendly against Sri Lanka, and former Hampshire seamer Davd Griffiths added to the squad.
If Meschede isn't fit then I'd revert to the extra batsman for the trip, personally, with Jones or Barrow replacing JO. With Myburgh having made a success of opening vs Durham then perhaps if makes sense to give Barrow his chance? He made useful runs in both innings at that venue last season.
On Friday trying to spot people in the crowd was a welcome distraction from the cricket though!
I think it would take two innings of that kind of absurd pace to give a team a good shot at 300... i..e about 174 from 50 balls would leave you 70 legitimate deliveries to get the "other," 126 runs needed for 300.
I think that shows exactly how improbable 300 would be...

Are there any reports from some who were there?
Remember that we usually lose when Tres wins the toss in T20 cricket.
Quote:Clarence Parker
I would envisage, purely from looking at the scorecard, that our bowling lacked some tightness, and our opening batsmen failed to get our innings off to a good enough start.
Are there any reports from some who were there?
Nothing in the pitch for either sides bowlers. We gave away two cheap early wickets and found ourselves on back foot from there onwards. Really strange innings by JH who didn't hit a boundary still the last but one ball.
Little or no threat with the ball, we are just being milked for 8/10 per over with no idea how to stop it.
We can't take wickets in the powerplay, and when the field goes back we have third man and fine leg up so basically any shot infront the wicket gets a minimum of a single.
In reply we seemed to lack urgency the whole way.
Yes we lost early wickets, but until the last over we showed now intent to get the rate down.
Tregs was great, but if he'd gone crazy 4 or 5 overs out we may have had a chance of getting in touch for last 1 or 2.
Hildy was bizarre, he never played a big shot, he was steady, single almost every ball, but the required rate was 11-12, so singles were not enough, nothing over top, or sweeps, reverse sweeps, very odd.
As it was we smashed the last over to get loss to single figures, but in reality were never in with a sniff the way we played.
3 home T20 defeats on the bounce, I'd suggest for the first time ever?
We have historically been so strong at home in this format.
I'll get shouted at but we so miss Jos, there seems no belief now we can hit 10 an over, where as with Jos we seemed to think 50 off 5 was easy. We may still think that but we currently don't have the line up chasing 50 off 5.
Give or take each of the 3 defeats we have let rate get up, tried to chase 50 or 60 off last 5 and failed.
In some previous seasons we had not three gun batsmen, but five as we had not only Jos but also the real KP.
That and trying to pick the ball out when it's gloomy is a nightmare I sense.
Dirk despite his decent start at glos hasn't really delivered. Sammy showed tonight what world class T20 bowling is about.
Nannes no longer has pace which is tough for a gut that relied on it.
I certainly don't dispute that we are struggling to get a hitter in doing some damage and if Jos was here it might be him but the problem seems to be getting a hitter in NOT that hitter being Jos Buttler because it seems he used to do it all the time whenever we asked him to - not the case in my recollection.
It was as likely to be down to Pete or Craig K or Craig M as Jos. It certainly wasn't down to Marcus last year but we would not be surprised if he did it this. We have more than one T20 game changer in this side. They are all under achieving. Last year we had one more and still didn't do particularly well simply because of JB's presence.

I'm not head of the Jos fan club, I think he's the best one day batter in the country but he's gone end of story.
I'd love it to now be Mesch, Gregory, Cove but at the minute we just aren't doing it.
Comnpo certainly wasn't the answer in the first 3 games, and Hildy didn't manage it today.
We really just need some greater intent I feel.
I'd have been far happier us all out for 150 off 18 tonight going for it, than only being 4 down but never really going for it in the closing overs.
Yes the powerplay was poor, but even after that you have to keep playing shots, a rate of 11-12 is so hard to chase for a long period, just one over of 6-7-8 means the rate keeps climbing. And so it was, Sammy I think went for a 4 or 5 and from 56 from 5 it got to 42 from 3, 32 from 2, 27 from 1 etc.
We are now in a real mess, I think you can afford to lose no more than 5 really, meaning you need to win 9. So I make that we need at least 8 wins from the last 10, with 6 on away pitches that don't always suit us.....
game?
That's going to undermine you, big-time.

It's all going wrong what has happened to our batting? The batsman that did score runs was at over a run a ball, like James Hildreth did but no fours.
Marcus lost the toss so no blame to him for batting last, we should be good enough batting second to chase down a total.
How good is your eye sight, can you see the coin?
A good stop down the leg side by Craig Kieswetter.
And then Craig tried to stump Jacques Rudolph but as you can see his foot is firmly on the ground.
Peter Trego's goalkeeping skills came in handy catching Jacques Rudolph off Max Waller.
Alfonso Thomas had Darren Sammy tied up in knots by bowling wide outside the off stumps, he missed the ball several time trying to hit the ball to the boundary.
Until finally Darren Sammy did get an edge and was caught behind by Craig Kieswetter off Alfonso Thomas.
Marcus Trescothick edged behind to Mark Wallace off Graham Wagg.
Peter Trego played a good innings today, you need some luck on the way to a big score like this bottom edge just missing the stumps.
Feel sorry for Trigger after his sterling performance.
Grizzzly
Well done to Pete but like England almost every time he was left with too much to do in too little time. The first 6 overs boys in T20 that is where it happens or the job of winning gets really hard.
And yes you are right WSM Jos Buttler has gone..."end of story"

The CC leaders are getting pasted in hit and giggle every week and it seems to have affected their CC form not one jot either.
Mike asked the question about our T20 batting and 'what has gone wrong?'
It could be that the very thing that has made such a positive difference in the CC - batsmen heeding the injuctions of DN and DH to occupy the crease - has caused them to lose a little bit of sharpness in the attacking side of their game. A price VERY much worth paying, IMO.
I really would like to see some of the young players that did well to get to the second XI T20 final given their chance at first-team T20.
I tend to think that we rarely bat well in limited overs cricket on those type of pitches, probably because our guys are too used to belters for one-day home tracks.
My one niggle about us is we give the impression of our tactics being set in stone, the plans firmly laid before the match starts, and not flexible enough to change things as the game progresses. So Compo comes in at 3 v Durham when we are chasing quick runs with the rain coming in! That's just one example. Last night I felt there was a strong case for Myburgh coming in ahead of Hildreth, and that's not said with hindsight. JM hits boundaries, his scoring rate in the CC has been very impressive, plus James was coming in 'cold' after more than a week out. This may be totally wrong and unfair but we do always seem to stick to the batting order, and maybe the pre-conceived bowling plan too.
Great start in the CC though..let's hope for a good day tomorrow!
I can think of at least 9 batsmen who should be ahead of him in a one day selection meeting.
He'd be second on my team sheet for any championship game.

You just want someone to ask who would be number one.
(Sorry, Bobstan, you're not one of them)

V Hampshire T20
James Hildreth (Capt), George Dockrell, Chris Jones, Craig Kieswetter. Craig Meschede, Johann Myburgh, Dirk Nannes, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Alviro Petersen, Alfonso Thomas, Pete Trego and Max Waller.
So Chris Jones comes into the squad.
Still, I suppose there is still prize money that SCCC will not be winning if there isn't a more or less immediate turn around in results.
Even then, though, with our teams not participating in the CLT20, there is more prize money available for the CC than for this stuff anyway.
