Durham come South West for the return leg of the CC1 matches against us and we go into this one after a disappointing loss to Surrey in the T20 at home. Questions are being asked about our home tactics, why are we constantly looking to chase on flat wickets rather than set out our own stall and ask the opposition to take their best shot at it. If it is as flat as the M5 why don't we like batting

After the poor batting performance in failing to chase down Surrey's T20 total on Sunday afternoon we need to get back into unbeaten CC1 form for Durham's visit to the 'M5 offshoot' today.

Marcus must pick a side with changes after Lewis Gregory pulled a hamstring and has been sidelined for between a fortnight and at least a month and a half, depending on reports.  The squad for today is;

Trescothick, Myburgh, Compton, Petersen, Hildreth, Kieswetter, Trego, Overton C, Dockrell, Thomas and Overton J

The Overton brothers on the same sheet for the first time in 2014 and that suggests that Craig Meschede is far from ready yet.  The loss of Gregory is a bitter blow for us and for him given his start to this season. 

Day 1 started when Durham won the toss and decided to bat in overcast conditions on a muggy day.  Alf, after his excellent death bowling and his attempt to hit 20 odd off 12, opened the bowling - AND TORE through the Durham front end on a pitch that was giving movement and swing.  6 for 1 became 11 for 2 before Pete got in on the act and reduced them to 3 for 24 followed by 4 for 24 the very next ball.  The M5 seems to be shut and we've moved onto a one lane dirt track with no certainty at all.

Collingwood and Borthwick put up something of a fight to get their side over 100 but then the Thomas and Trego show started again.  97 for 5 (Thommo) became 116 for 6 (Trigger) and then George helped out with Pringle at 124 followed by Alf's five fer at 134.  George and Craig O then finished off the men from the North East and Durham fialed to reach any batting points while we took maximum bowling points and required 6 runs in our first innings to avoid the follow on.

Alfonso looked superb in T20 on Sunday and he looked even better on Day 1 of this game.  There always seemed to be a game needed early on in a season to get the man in the groove and this looks like it was the 2014 version.  Final first innings figures of 15 overs, 4 maidens, 5 for 41 put paid to the opposition's first ha;lf of the game and we took the field to pass the follow on total and try and end Day 1 without loss.

It didn't quite work out that way as the skipper wafted and his first delivery and was caught at third slip for a golden duck.  Oh dear.  His opening partner Johan Myburgh (yes that is right, don't ask me why either, it was a bit of a surprise it seems to all watching as we have 3 international openers in this side) settled in to grind out runs up until the close of play and did a decent job.  Unfortunately the ball is doing things and it did something that got Nick Compton in difficulties and he also left the field of play (32 for 2) before the end of the session which ended at 5:30 cut short by rain which turned into heavy electrical storms over night.

Somerset start Day 2 at 51 for 2 with Alviro on 8 and Johan on 28.  he game is going to be disrupted by the weather according to predictions so we have to get on with it today, pass their total and set up something that our bowlers can work with to get this game over with in less than 4 days.  There is a good chance of big points if the middle order keeps its head and the rain lets us get on with it.

Squad of 12 announced.
Jones dropped, Gregory, Mesch, Dibble, Kirby all out injured.

The 12 includes Dockers, Cove and Barrow in addition to the 9 from last match.
Assume Cove will come in for Lewis.
So choice between Alex and George, really hope we go for the spin and move top 8 up 1 but fear we won't.

Guess no Lewis weakens batting but I'd be happy with Cove 8, Alfie 9, Dockers 10, Jove 11.

Gives us 4 seamers and 2 spin options, much better balance for me

I think on the whole I'd agree and go with Myburgh and Dockrell as spin options, but I am conscious that Craig K is very much in the frame as Prior's replacement should he not be fit so there might be a thought to include Barrow.
And yes,can we bat first please and even more get 4 bonus points by close of play.

I suspect that the inclusions may well be Barrow and Dockrell, which would leave:

I think that would, surely, be a "bat first," team.

I strongly suspect that Barrow will play and that only one of Craig Overton or GD will do so.

I think there are two reasons why Barrow will play. GM alludes to one of them. The other is that I think that we've decided, as a matter of policy, to be as hard to beat as possible and that that entails picking the longest batting line-up that we reasonably can....

I suppose if we want to be a bit more positive , then they might include Craig Overton at eight instead of Myburgh (on the basis that they have a specialist spinner playing)?

I would quite like to see Craig Overton play as he looked very promising before last season's injury setback.

No Gregory and no Meschede are real blows to the bowling, IMO, but it would be fantastic if, at some stage later in the season, we have all of Gregory, Meschede and Craig Overton competing with Pete for seaming all-rounder berths in our CC first XI.

So Durham have picked their specialist spinner, too, so this may well have been one of those home tosses (which I think often does not apply) that we'd have been really hoping to win.

Is it lots of e's, one g and lots of o's - or a few e's, one g, and a few o's - or some other combination? I can accept that lots of g's is clearly wrong (and un-pronounceable), but methinks we should bite this bullet early on in his career before things get out of hand.

I suspect they just read the bit on the official site, where DN said he'd be out for "at least a couple of weeks."

So far as I know, the scan result is still awaited. But I suspect it will be more like 6 weeks.

Tumbles re: the weather, Wednesday's forecast seems okay, Thursday's not completely dire?

I suspect the Durham bowlers will also be a handful under leaden skies and in humid weather so I wouldn't be at all surprised if there are at least 15 wickets down after day one of this one.

In which case a bit of play on Tue and Thur and most or all of a day on Wed might yet be enough to get a result.

Failing that, I'll cling to the notion that the forecasts seem to me to tend to be worse than the actual weather about 75% of the time.

The forecast seems to vary. Anyway time for Marcus and co to try and put us in a decent position against a weakened Durham attack. Anything above 250 will put us in a good position.

Well, Mr Myburgh, whom I certainly did not expect to see opening the batting, given that we have three current or former Test openers in our XI, seems to have been rather more successful than almost all of the other top order batsmen in this match, thus far.

Well, a good day that sounds as though it's probably over with now.

Let's hope the rain clears off fairly early tomorrow.

It's supposed to be sunny afterwards, so we might somewhat more benign batting conditions if we are lucky.

What a superb day, outstanding.

Who could have dreamed of bowling a team out at Taunton on day 1 inside 50 overs!

It could have been slightly better at 24-4 and ideally we wouldn't have lost 2 wickets, but with no Lewis or Meschede and on a "flat" Taunton pitch, small ground blah blah it's been a great day.

Game well advanced which helps negate some of the dodgy weather predicted.

Personally, I'm not surprised that, given suitable overhead conditions, Taunton proved favourable for bowling, simply because we've often seen it before.

It's likely to be less humid for the rest of the match, so I'd imagine there is likely to be somewhat less swing for the remainder of the match.. in which case the question may well become one of how much there is in the pitch itself (as opposed to ambient conditions).

For those that were there today, would you say that - in the final session - there was lot going off the seam, rather than through the air?

A couple of wickets in his brief bowl for GD was good news too, particularly with Edgbaston on the horizon. Edgbaston is often a spinner's track - and was for George last season, so we could do with him finding a bit of form and confidence and hopefully those couple of wickets will help with that.

As somebody said Marcus should lose the toss more often. The conditions were perfect for bowling, with heavy cloud and very humid.

No complains about any of the bowlers, the ball in most cases bowled in the correct areas.

Forecast shows improvement by 11 for tomorrow and really nice till 6-7pm so hopefully we could catch the majority of overs up going later. If we can bat all day (assuming the bowling conditions aren't so friendly) could be in a strong position come day 3.

Alf bowled very well indeed and Trigger gave problems too. Even George posed a few probs and gained a couple of wickets. Ground fielding was good and one of Hildy's catches was a peach! Overhead conditions were cloudy and humid and the ball was moving. Only saw two deliveries that caught the batsmen unawares.

Least said about Marcus' shot the better!! Compo was done by unexpected pace and lift from Wood's first delivery.

Myburgh batted compactly and sensibly.

Alf says this track has a fair amount of pace in it. If so - and if the pitch retains said pace - then there might be something in this for the bowlers, throughout even when the weather is not in their favour.

The ground staff are working hard at 7.45 (goodness knows what time they started) the covers are being removed, when I looked they were already emptying a full load of water from the Blotter.

All ground staff have always worked hard for us to see this lovely game of cricket.

If weren't favourites at the end of yesterday, we surely would have been at lunchtime today but I wouldn't say we are favourites now.

In less favourable bowling conditions that in the first dig, I guess we really missed Lewis Gregory.

I hope Meschede is fit to return at Edgbaston at the weekend.

I'd have thought we ought to bring him back, probably instead of Jamie Overton for the trip to Birmingham. I'm afraid Jamie just isn't taking any wickets. I'd actually give him a dose of one-day cricket for a bit instead... partly because he'd have to pitch the ball up more in short form cricket and partly because he'd hopefully get a few wickets with batsmen coming at him which could restore some confidence.

Long way to go in this game yet, AG!

I had a very frustrating hour's drive home - heard Jennings get out just as I got in the car and settled in for a good haul of wickets on my way home. A couple of drops (AP's seemed very hard from what the comms said) and loads of edged fours by the sound of it - certainly Jove seemed to beat the outside edge or go for four through thrid man pretty much every ball.

As I say, a very frustrating evening's journey - need early breakthroughs tomorrow, or could have a tough chase.

Thought we were poor today!! Alviro batted well and so did Craig. Why is Compton playing t20 when he is around. Tommo bowled well but apart from that we were toothless. Young wood is miles aheaD of Overton !!!

Last over summed it up for me. 11/12 runs taken from it including a large 6 to the Longest part of ground. Durham well on top now and we need early wickets or we are just looking for rain on thurs for a draw. hildreth can look at those 2 tonight for concentration levels and playing game on merits.

I was positive after yesterday, not tonight.

Can't agree game is in balance, I'd say as much as 75% in Durhams favour.

We seemed clueless in last hour and half, things just drifted. Wwe may get early wickets but forecast set for sunny day and I fear they'll get to tea if not the close.

History tells you any 4th innings chase isn't easy, may not be as hard at Taunton as other places but still wouldn't fancy chasing anything over 225/250.
Lots of batters not really in form, we have potential but too many aren't standing up together.

The collapse after lunch today has done us, if we'd have got through that we could have took advantage of the sun from 3pm onwards, as it is the small lead has gone.

Very impressed with Wood and Rushworth too, don't see us chasing anything comfortably v those two.

Yes, WSM, I don't really fancy our batsmen vs Wood either. He sounded too good for us today and may be an England bowler sooner than later. I saw him bowl at the Oval last year and he was very sharp and menacing.

Having said that, Durham will need Thursday's forecast to be wrong to have much hope of gaining their first ever CC1 win at Taunton.

For our part, we'd need a superb bowling performance today and some play tomorrow to win. A tall order given a sunny day and only one bowler (Alf) in something like top form.

I don't want to join any bandwagon criticising Jove too harshly, but you do have to wonder whether a #11 batsman who is only trusted to bowl 5 out of 60 overs is really worth his place in the side at the moment.

Those giving orders want shooting if that's the case.

If the average Div One team takes 200 wickets per season that means 1,800 wickets fall in Div One. I bet no more than 200 - tops! - fall to short balls.

To be honest, Jamie has been better today than vs Notts - lower proportion of short-balls, but, still, Tres's decisions as to bowling order and proportions look an accurate assessment of current form to me (although GD could have bowled better and thus might have been slightly over-bowled this morning).

Yep agree SJB, innings totals have increased during the course of the match, and if weather permits, there is no reason why this should not be won. Required run rate must be around 3 per over allowing for some rain interruptions, which is a comfortable target.

Good news.

Much better forecast now on BBC Weather Video site - early morning rain should be in Wales by 8am leaving Taunton sunny.

Showers only from that point onwards, hopefully we miss them.

I enjoyed the best part of the first two sessions today.

Firstly, the bowling of both Craig Overton and Dockrell was very good indeed. There were two very good catches by Kieswetter and the side as a whole appeared more 'vocal' than in some recent games and (dare I say) more motivated.

This was good to see.

The only slight disappointment for me was again the bowling of Jamie Overton.

Let us hope that the predicted weather does not impede our progress too much tomorrow.

An enjoyable day, during which it was good to meet up with some old friends and acquaintances.

Can't get down there tomorrow, but hoping for the best.

Can't help think but England have ruined Jove in the same way they tried to change Finns delivery. At beginning of last season he was a bit raw but would get wickets. Now he just seems to be spraying it everywhere with little success to accompany it.

Would imagine when Meshy and Gregory are fit and we want to play George that he could be the one to make way.

Clarence - I think you would at least have to concede that Craig Overton showed the requisite grit all day.

In the end, Durham may owe Chris Rushworth a round of drinks - if not for his knock then Durham may have lost tonight.

As for tomorrow?

For us to be confident then forecast would have to be totally wrong I.e. day would have to be sunny.

If it's partially wrong I.e. heavily overcast and on and off for rain then batting conditions may be as per the first four sessions of this match I.e difficult.

I thought we could have wrapped Durham up sooner today, had Tres given Craig O the second new ball as soon as it was available.

I thought Dockrell's bowling was underwhelming today...he failed to maintain the requisite accuracy.

Very happy to eat my words!
Thought we were poor yesterday and right up against it.
As superb spell by Cove and an outstanding knock from both openers has turned it right around.
Given weather we're not home yet but definitely ours to lose from here.

If it hasn't been mentioned Tregs catch to get Rushworth was absolutely outstanding.
Didn't get the acclaim it deserved as the openers had to run off and he was on the somerset stand boundary so away from the pavilion all were then heading for.
Rushworth middled it and Tregs on the mid wicket boundary dived full length goalie style to his left and clung on with both hands, truly special.
If we see a better catch at HQ this season i'll be very surprised.

Whatever happens with the weather today, you have to say that the wider picture seems hugely promising from a bowler stand-point at SCCC.

I cannot remember a time when so many promising young bowlers were emerging at SCCC at the same time. The fact that three of them have clear all-round potential is a bonus.

I guess the next trick for Nos and co is to start producing similar results with the young batsmen. I guess Tom Abell faces a further wait for his chance if Myburgh is going to be used as an opener. And given JM's returns in this match and the fact that he was chosen for the role ahead of NC and AP, one must assume that the plan is that JM will open for the forseeable.

Yeah, but if it's really overcast it might not be that straightforward as simply batting aggressively and piling up runs as per last night.

Presumably, if there are all these storms around, it is humid down there today?

As I understand it, there is a severe weather warning in force for the whole of Southern England and all of Wales and the detail of the warning basically says (and I paraphrase) "We have no real idea of where most of the rain will fall, it could be anywhere, everywhere or almost nowhere."

Latest Beeb radar implies that we might get an hour this morning, then can expect very heavy rain maybe for a couple of hours around lunchtime... so I'd imagine it will then be a case of desperately trying to dry the ground out in order to then fit another 60-90 mins at the end of the day..

Not sure if this warrants a seperate thread, but wondering what others think from a purely Somerset perspective of Myburgh vs Buttler?

Myburgh is effectively the replacement for Buttler & certainly at the time I felt somewhat underwhelemed. But Buttler has the England limited overs spot in the bank at the moment so will be a bit busy there & Myburgh has shown himself to be a valuable player both with bat & ball & of course we don't have the who will keep wicket debate all the time, with Barrow an able deputy if required anyway.

of course we'd all prefer to have players who have come through the ranks & I'll really miss Buttler in the 20/20 stuff but just wondering if Myburgh might actually turn out to be a better option for the CC?

God, UK weather is frustrating, to say the very least.

Those runs at the end of their innings yesterday will ultimately have saved Durham. Without Rushworth's 48 and the time taken in getting them, we could have claimed the extra half an hour and finished Durham off yesterday, IMO.

I don't know where this leaves us in the table? Probably some way from contention at the right end of it, I'd guess. But presumably ahead of Durham, Lancs and certainly Northants?

Blame it all on Sky TV.

For what is frustrating is that all the other championship matches finished in glorious sunshine yesterday - and all produced positive results.

We are only playing today because Sky ordered the ECB to provide a T20 Blast match last Sunday, and the ECB in turn ordered Somerset and Surrey to play it.

You could, of course, argue on the other hand, that if Durham had batted first on Sunday instead of Monday, conditions would have been far easier.

The sun is out.

BUT BUT the square couldn't get covered quick enough because we were having thunder and lightening with hail stones.

I have returned home for a complete change of clothing.

The outfield is covered with water in places, when I was waking out the car park was like a river.

Don't ask me if there will be play I don't know it will be a miracle if we do play

The lake in front of the Cowshed pours onto the grass from the terrace. Shame we didn't have some sandbags. If there is more play today the groundstaff should be awarded a Benefit Year never mind collections for the new pavilion.

Right, now I have dried off and had something to eat I feel a lot better.

That run-out by Marcus was stupid there was never two runs on, the fielder was just picking up the ball just as Myburgh completed the first run. Somebody said he had one eye on the weather I said he should have had two eyes on the fielder (joke) one extra run wouldn't have made any difference to the time remaining.

The covers are off from what I can see and there are people still in the Botham Stand.
The clouds are moving quickly and the sun is trying to come out.

I am going to pop over to the ground and see if there is any news.

Could be completely wrong, but I'd have thought that the relatively short interval between inspections (45 mins) means that some sort of decision may well come at 2:15pm, whether it's to abandon the match, or to announce a start at x or y time "if no further rain."

I never understand this business of carrying out an inspection and then saying that play will start in an hour's time. Either it's fit for play in which case the teams should have 10 minutes to get ready or they announce that there will be a further inspection. Anyone enlighten me?

Grizzzly - latest time is probably around 5.15 in reality (in theory, they could go back out, have one over and then time's up). It's not a limited over game, and there are meant to be 96 (?) overs in the day, so there might only be time for one or two of them. Sometimes umpires are sticklers for these things, sometimes they'll just talk to both captains, agree there's no time for a result either way, and abandon.

Angell: in general, I'd agree with you, though I suspect the groundstaff have said they'll need an hour to mop up and get everything ready - during which time they sensibly take tea. I think "starting at 3.45" effectively means they'll "inspect" around 3.35 and check the groundstaff have got it mopped up and ready.

Haven't posted on here for an eternity but been an avid follower of this wonderful site. The efforts of all involved with our great club be that players, groundstaff and of course the best supporters in the land deserve praise for this game having any chance of reaching a result. having seen pictures of the lake this morning a truely magnificent effort to be out there now.

Living in deepest Cumbria the chance to watch SCCC is limited to usually a few days a season when we play 'Up North' so the comments, reviews, photos from all you regular posters are appreciated more than you know.

Looking forward to visiting Taunton for the first time in 9 years this summer and taking my 8 year old Somerset fan of a son to a game there for the first time.
Now to listen to hopefully a positive conclusion and stop looking at the rainfall radar!!

To be honest, SP, to the best of my knowledge, Durham's in-game injuries were not a factor until today by which time the ghost was arguably up for them (other than with major weather help) anyway. Or at least that was the case, I think, with the seam bowlers ones and Borthwick does not really bowl that much for them anyway, I think.

Certainly, I think we suffered greater misfortune with our in-game injuries in the first two CC matches of our season.

Obviously, they could cite Onions being out as a big factor for them but then we could do the same with Gregory based on current form, if not career record.

Further good news - Craig Meschede was back in action for the first time since his injury for the Seconds today, although he didn`t bowl and failed to get off the mark.

Somerset beat Worcesterhire Seconds by five wickets at Kidderminster, and are through to the T20 finals at Arundel on June 5th.

Main scorers were Tom Abell, James Burke and James Regan. Good also to see Gareth Andrew back in action for Worcs, after an excellent start to the championship season but with a recent period out injured.

You will all be glad to know that after the match several members of the management including Guy Lavender came out onto the ground and shook the hand of all the ground staff, and Julian even thanked them on the speakers. And they were given a little something (my lips are sealed).

Very sorry to hear of your bereavement, stevecav.

A superb performance by the team. Trescothick's innings seemed to me to be typically selfless. He might have been forgiven for playing with caution, after two recent golden ducks. Instead, he led from the front, playing aggressively to give us the best possible chance, given the forecast. His innings - and general form this season (he is our leading scorer in the cc) - put into perspective the uncharitable comments of one or two posters (who presumably thought they were being clever or funny or both).

The groundsmen were undoubtedly our twelfth men - and it is very good to hear from Mike that they received proper recognition at the end of the match.

I also think that AG deserves an honourable mention for some inspired reverse-vexing (if that is the correct expression) as regards the rain.

Finally, I should like to join others who have expressed their appreciation for Mike's photos. They all tell a story and help those of us who can't be at the ground to get a feel for the action.

Great result, some good performances within the squad.
I think those of us who were able to watch today really appreciated the hard work the Ground staff did to give us chance of winning.

Pleased to see Roy Kerslake first on the field at end to shake the hand of each of the groundsman.

In a totally different way to that Yorkshire run chase a few seasons ago, this ranks as another great day in our history. Just to add to the many praises of the groundstaff, that result would not have been possible without them. A sterling job! Onwards & upwards.

I have never waivered in my support of our skipper, he is quite simply the best Somerset batsmen I have had the pleasure to witness in my 18 years membership.
Yes he had a poor season last year but always knew he would come good.
Very very few players can play like he does and did today, he dominates attacks from ball 1 and can score all around the wicket, well done Banger!!!

All smiles after at the end of the match, a shame Marcus wasn't there at the end after doing the hard work to get us in a winning position, it was down to James Hildreth and Alviro Petersen to see us over the line.

Just in, with no idea of the score. What a great result, with sterling performances all round, especially from the ground staff. And well done Roy Kerslake for acknowledging their matchwinning contribution. Hope it is reflected in their pay packet. Justifiable praise too for Trescothic from a generous Collingwood.

Delighted to learn of this victory today.

Let us hope that it will not be too long before we can sing the praises of a Somerset County Championship win again.

Congratulations to all the team and ground staff.

For once, a coach's comment to the effect that "we can take a lot of positives out of this game" would appear to be fully justified.

Nobody at the ground has said this, after the match all of the players were in the dressing room singing the Black Bird song you could hear it all the way across the ground. They got a clap when they finished.

Totally professional last day from everyone from Simon and his ground team to the Boss in form I haven't seen from him at home for far too long. Durham were unfortunately hampered by bowling injuries but when that happens and you put them away like this you have to say it was a 'job well done'.

As far as the skipper is concerned. Although it would be too much to expect this from him every game as was once the possible case (it seems it has been over 600 days since his last 3 figures at home...really?) there is still a considerable amount of class in the man and we are all very privileged to still be able to see days like this. Seems you write him off at your peril. I'm looking forward to some classic Banger magic in June/August and on present form I expect to get it. If he bats like this I'll hide him in the field any day.

I was unable to follow yesterday’s match, being congenially engaged in grand-parental duties, and am profoundly grateful to Big Jim for informing me of the result in early evening.

So he joins the long list of those to be thanked and congratulated. Praises have already been appropriately sung of the ground staff, MT for his leadership and masterly batting, my hero for his magnanimous comments, Thomas, Cove, Dockrell, Trego (that catch), Myburgh, Petersen, Hildreth. And then there is Mike, always prompt with his splendid photos, and Tractor, who does wonders for my morale as well as that of the team.

And I must thank the pessimists among us who so frequently remind me how much I prefer to drink from a glass that is half full (until it is empty, at which point I seek to replenish it).

How good it is to be alive and a lover of Somerset cricket!

And I think we can now safely agree, Grockle, that we shall still be the only undefeated side in CC Div One come lunchtime on Monday, exactly one third of our way through the season.

(That does not preclude our having won the match by that time)
