Hants T20

Max returns to the team in dim and drizzle ladened conditions at home as we welcome Hampshire and Shahid Afridi in another guise for another county, along with Gareth Andrewdoing the same. Not expected to start on time but it does...whether it will finish with a 20 over game is yet to be seen.

v HAMPSHIRE T20 @ Taunton 19 June 2016

I'm coming into this at the 10 over stage of the Hampshire innings and it looked good with Max Waller taking two excellent wickets in the eleventh and the visitors is lots of trouble at 76 for 5 .

However Dawson and that man Afridi start to motor before Max fools Afridi, in an over where he has gone for 16, by taking a gambke and floating another up and bowling him at 124 for 7. Max finishes on 4 0 33 4 - half of which came in ovef 4. Well played sir.

Dawson strolls down to the River end on a call and finds he's doing it a little slowly because by the time he grounds his bat Myburgh picks up and takes out the one stump and it's 125 for 8. Then we have rainand we are off with 16.3

We have to finish by 6:15 so we can have a 5 over reply at 5:55....at the worst. We don't lose anything for an hour

We are back on at 4:20 with no change in overs Darren Sami (0) and Gareth Berg (0) face 3.3 overs and by the end of the over its 126 for 8. Sami is on a mission but is hitting little. Jamie Overton is on for the 19th and Sami smacks the ball like a bullet straight into Allenby's gut at extra cover 132 for 9. Tino Best drops one into Gayles bucket hands at mid wicket and Hants are all out for 133 with 9 balls to spare.

Best to Gayle and the first is four byes!! Then 4 leg byes as the ball swings massively away. Wide. It's moving a long way. The first ball goes for a single. Allenby puts his second away for four off the pace of the ball reallyand we have 14 off the first one. Berg opens the account from the River end. Gayle gets off the mark in his last innings with a hobbled single... is he fit? Allenby then flat bats the ball straight to Afridi at extra cover and we are 15 for 1. In comes Pete Trego. 18 for 1 after 2T

The third over is a Tino Best maiden until the Jamaican takes 2 off the last ball. In the 4th Darren Sami gets Pete to top edge one into the midfield and that is the end of him at 28. Jaywardene joins his international partner as Gareth Berg changes ends for the 5th and we have a game at 37 for 2 - 4 ahead of the D/L with Gayles first boundary after 13 balls.

Hampshire put on Tino to try and get a wicket but his first ball goes for a Gayle six into the Somerset Stand. It is very dim and drizzly and Somerset are 9 ahead of the D/L requirement. The D/L is changing every ball but with a Mahela boundary we are still ahead of it. 48 for 2 after 6 with a D/L at 38.

Afridi takes the 7th and is driven for 50 off the second ball and we move on to 52. Dawson is on and the ball is in the CA car park ball 1.

Gayle goes from nonchalant wafts at balls to huge sixes into car parks ball by ball. One minute he's nowhere near the ball and then dismisses one over the O Ondaatje like it was nothing. He's moved on to 42 and you are not sure where they came from - another boundary takes him to within 4 of a farewell half ton. At 10 Somerset are on 82 - 22 ahead of the rate.

Mahela joins in with a sublime six into the Tribute tent off Afridi. Gayle's 50 comes up in 37 balls (4xfour and 3xsix) as we move to 94 after 11. 40 off 9 overs.

Will Smith takes the 12th and he bowls CG (off pole out of the ground)for 52. He leaves to a standing ovation at 95 for 3. In comes Myburgh. Jayawardene brings up the 100 with a cheeky 2 past the keeper. The rain is belting down now but MJ is putting on a batting masterclass of sublety and sheer class. Dawson changes ends and after 13 it is 112 for 3.

Afridi then changes ends and MJ plays him the same way looking for angles and taking the boundaries. Johann is also looking for the angles and getting the same results. 127 for 3 with 2 balls of the 15th left. With a lofted four off the last we need 2 to win. Berg to Myburgh for the 16th. A defensive shot, a mistimed pull, a wicket as JM is bowled, losing the top of leg, Gregory hits the winning four and it's done and dusted. Excellent game that I would have predicted could not have happened based ont he weather this morning. Excellent management by the umpires (well done George Burns and Steve O'Shaughnessy) and good entertainment for a very impressive crowd.

Back 'in country' 4 days and I am not yet totally sick of the alien concept of rain. But this drizzly non cricket weather can go away in short jerky movements any time it likes. Today's game looks in danger from Bicknoller Towers at 8 this morning. Is it a 5:30 start? Not sure whether later gives it a better or worse chance of happening.
